I've got the card reader to work following the solution linked above by
Hélion (installing a Realtek driver on 12.04, independently of Adam's
mainline kernel, or Quantal updates). I first uninstalled Adam's
mainline kernel (rolled back to the normal kernel I was running before,
delivered to me via
@Luis: Thanks a lot for the explanation. I will try to do that after the
next kernel update. (Currently running the mainline kernel provided by
Adam, and it generally works fine, including the card reader.)

Hello Adam,
I notice you've changed the status for 12.04 to Won't fix.
I am now running your 12.04 mainline kernel, which allows me to use the
card reader (but has some minor problems with other pieces of hardware).
Any advice you could give me about managing this situation?
