[Bug 1892085] Re: Wrong cursor theme (Adwaita) for cursors set by CSS, like cursor:wait and cursor:grab

It does look like a packaging bug, because the cursors are fine in
chromium-browser packaged as a deb (I installed the bionic packages in a

[Bug 1892724] Re: Bump package epoch to 1 to ensure working upgrade path and transition to snap

2020-08-31 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Verified working.
For convenience I used a slightly different testing method than the test case
in the bug description: I downloaded and installed (with `dpkg -i`) the
chromium-browser, chromium-browser-l10n and chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra debs
from
https://launchpad.net/~canonical-chromium-builds/+archive/ubuntu/stage/+sourcepub/11549449/+listing-archive-extra
(version 85.0.4183.83-0ubuntu0.18.04.1, currently awaiting sponsoring to
bionic-security) in a fully up-to-date focal VM. I then ran `sudo apt update`
to verify that no update was available for chromium-browser. I then enabled
focal-proposed for universe and verified that the update to chromium-browser
1:85.0.4183.83-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 was available, installed it with `sudo apt
install chromium-browser`, and checked that this installed the chromium snap as
expected. I then verified that chromium-browser launches and works as expected.

[Bug 1892146] Re: [snap] Deleting the ~/snaps folder breaks Gnome dash window tracking for chromium

2020-08-28 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Ok, so the issue with the launcher is that your favourite for Chromium
is 'chromium-browser.desktop', whereas it should be
'chromium_chromium.desktop'.

If you have the chromium-browser deb package installed, running /usr/bin
/chromium-browser (just once) should translate the desktop file name. If
not, you can modify its value by hand with this command:

gsettings set org.gnome.shell favorite-apps "['thunderbird.desktop',
'libreoffice-writer.desktop', 'libreoffice-calc.desktop',
'org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop', 'chromium_chromium.desktop',
'org.gnome.Screenshot.desktop', 'org.gnome.Calculator.desktop']"

Please let us know if that fixes the problem for you.

[Bug 1892724] Re: Bump package epoch to 1 to ensure working upgrade path and transition to snap

2020-08-26 Thread Olivier Tilloy
** Description changed:

+ As a follow-up to bug #1889106, it was decided that the best solution to
handle recurring version bumps for chromium-browser updates in stable series
was to bump the package epoch to 1.
+ See the discussion in
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2020-August/041127.html.
+ This needs to be done in groovy (done) and SRUed to focal.
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ Users upgrading from 18.04 to 20.04 will not get the latest chromium snap
replacing the chromium-browser deb package as intended as soon as a security
update is published to bionic-security (which happens typically every 2-3
weeks).
+ This is because the version number in 18.04 often ends up being greater than
the version in 20.04. Bumping the version number in 20.04 is enough to fix
this, and was done a few times already (bug #1858500, bug #1889106), but it is
tedious and impractical.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * Ensure that a version of chromium-browser newer than
84.0.4147.105-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 is available in bionic-{security,updates} (not
currently the case, but will soon happen as version 85.0.4183.83 was just
released upstream)
+ * On a machine running 18.04, ensure that the chromium snap is *not*
installed, then install the chromium-browser deb package: sudo apt install
chromium-browser
+ * Upgrade that machine to Ubuntu 20.04
+ * When upgrading, the chromium-browser package becomes a transitional
package that installs the chromium snap
+ * Verify that the chromium snap is installed
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * The chromium snap has some known shortcomings and regressions
+ compared to the deb package, they are being tracked at
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/chromium-
+ browser/+bugs?field.tag=snap. Auto-upgrading users from the deb to the
+ snap is the desired behaviour though.
+
+ [Original Description]
+
For a complete rationale, see comments #4, #5, #7 and #8 in bug
#1889106, and the discussion in https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives
  /ubuntu-devel/2020-August/041127.html.

This needs to be done in groovy and SRUed to focal.

2020-08-26 Thread Olivier Tilloy
$SNAP_DATA/policies is not writable by the snap, so the import of existing
policies won't work.
This would have to be implemented in the transitional deb package's postinst
script.

What can be done is to try $SNAP_DATA/policies, and if that folder
doesn't exist fall back to /etc/chromium-browser/policies.

[Bug 1893021] [NEW] Flash plugin symbol lookup error with firefox 80.0+build2 on xenial (gtk_window_set_titlebar)

2020-08-26 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Public bug reported:

When testing firefox 80.0+build2 on xenial (from https://launchpad.net
/~ubuntu-mozilla-security/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+packages), I'm observing
that the flash plugin (installed by flashplugin-installer) doesn't work.
This appears to affect only xenial, flash is working in the bionic and
focal builds.

This is what I'm seeing when launching firefox from a terminal:

  /usr/lib/firefox/plugin-container: symbol lookup error:
/usr/lib/firefox/libxul.so: undefined symbol: gtk_window_set_titlebar

This is most likely caused by this recent upstream change:

[Bug 1892146] Re: [snap] Deleting the ~/snaps folder breaks Gnome dash window tracking for chromium

2020-08-25 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Indeed, deleting the ~/snap folder isn't a reasonable use case, it will
break much more than just window tracking (for starters it will remove
your entire chromium profile, including bookmarks and navigation
history, which you most likely don't want).

That said, I can't seem to reproduce the bug. After deleting the ~/snap
folder and restarting chromium, the window is mapped to the launcher
icon as expected.

What is the output of the following command on your system?

gsettings get org.gnome.shell favorite-apps

[Bug 1888380] Re: Give better experience of migration of deb to snap

2020-08-25 Thread Olivier Tilloy
If a user installs the chromium-browser package afresh, without any
existing profile, I would argue that they don't care that the browser is
packaged as a snap, because they haven't used it before (not on that
machine at least).

Manually installing chromium-browser with apt does display messages that
hint at what happens under the hood, typically:

=> Installing the chromium snap

and

=> Snap installation complete

[Bug 1892724] Re: Bump package epoch to 1 to ensure working upgrade path and transition to snap

2020-08-24 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Quoting the ubuntu-devel@ conversation here for easier future reference:

« In doing SRU reviews today, I came across LP: #1889106 which is a
request for a no-change rebuild to bump the version so it beats the
versions presented in previous releases.

The problem is real, but it seems suboptimal to me to keep fixing it
this way. We'll need to keep SRUing chromium-browser to Focal (and later
releases presumably). Every time we do that, all users (who have the
transitional package) get yet another update to download, even if it is
small. And every time it takes both Olivier's and the SRU team's time.

Would an epoch bump be a better option here? Debian doesn't currently
carry a package with that name, so we're already diverged enough that I
don't forsee a problem from there. »

xnox answered:

« lxd used epoch too, to ensure that deb2snap transitional package is
always higher whichever backports are uploaded as debs into previous
series.

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxd

So +1 from me. »

and vorlon answered:

« I agree that an epoch bump on the transitional .deb in focal is a reasonable
solution for this issue. »

[Bug 1889106] Re: [SRU] Upgrading from 18.04 to 20.04 will keep the 18.04 chromium-browser due to a higher version than the transitional deb in 20.04

2020-08-24 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Verified working.
For convenience I used a slightly different testing method than the test case
in the bug description: I downloaded and installed (with `dpkg -i`) the
chromium-browser, chromium-browser-l10n and chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra debs
from
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/chromium-browser/84.0.4147.105-0ubuntu0.18.04.1
in a fully up-to-date focal VM. I then ran `sudo apt update` to verify that no
update was available for chromium-browser. I then enabled focal-proposed for
universe and verified that the update to chromium-browser
84.0.4147.105-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 was available, installed it with `sudo apt
install chromium-browser`, and checked that this installed the chromium snap as
expected. I then verified that chromium-browser launches and works as expected.

Thanks Robie for the suggestion. I hadn't thought of an epoch bump, but
it sounds like a good solution to the recurring problem at hand.

This is the ubuntu-devel@ discussion for reference:

I am going to test the package in focal-proposed and validate this SRU,
and I will then add the epoch in groovy and SRU it to focal.

In the meantime the 84.0.4147.105 update was published to

Reported as an upstream Node.js bug:
https://github.com/nodejs/node/issues/34666

** Description changed:

Since nodejs 12.18.1 entered groovy-proposed, autopkgtests that rely on

  node-create-hash on ppc64el (see

To further prove the point, adding `eval('')` to the body of ft()
ensures that the function is not optimized by V8, and the tests reliably
pass.

[Bug 1887144] Re: autopkgtest failures on ppc64el with nodejs 12.18.1

2020-08-06 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Some progress: running one of the failing tests through nodejs with the
--no-opt flag (for no optimizations) makes it consistently pass.

It looks like V8 is optimizing too aggressively, and incorrectly.

I can observe that when values start diverging, ft() is being called
with s===2, and despite that the "other" code path is run (return b ^ c
^ d).

[Bug 1887144] Re: autopkgtest failures on ppc64el with nodejs 12.18.1

2020-08-06 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Some notes while I continue investigating the problem:

 - while I used the last test in test/test.js to highlight the problem,
it isn't the only one that is failing

 - both sha.js and sha1.js are affected (unsurprisingly, as they have
very similar implementations), other algorithms (sha224, sha256, sha384
and sha512) behave correctly

 - I don't have a good understanding of what's going on yet, but
successive calls to the update() method on the hash object start
diverging values when calling ft(s, b, c, d), and the divergence happens
only when s === 2. Inlining the function doesn't fix the problem.

[Bug 1890049] Re: global menu bar no longer supported after 20.04 upgrade

2020-08-05 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Although the absence of a global menubar in GNOME by default did
influence this particular decision, the main factor was the increasing
difficulty to maintain the firefox patch that enabled the feature. The
patch was quite large (several thousands LOC) and heavily relied on
internal APIs that have been changing significantly in the past few
releases.

I appreciate this is a functional regression for users of Unity and
other desktop environments with a global menu bar, but this is a trade-
off that had to be made to ensure timely updates for future firefox
releases.

[Bug 1890319] Re: Please remove tinyjsd from the archive

2020-08-04 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Yes, this would need to be removal + sync blacklist for groovy, to be on
the safe side (although it's unlikely that Debian would ever upload a
new version).

I think it's OK for the package to be broken in focal. No one has ever
complained thus far, so my guess is that no-one uses it.

[Bug 1890319] [NEW] Please remove tinyjsd from the archive

2020-08-04 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Public bug reported:

>From https://sourceforge.net/u/pbrunschwig/tinyjsd/wiki/Home/:

« Note: due to the massive and rapid changes in the Mozilla Platform,
TinyJSD is no longer actively maintained. The last version supports
Thunderbird 60/SeaMonkey 2.57. We recommend to use the standard
Developer Tools that are shipped with Thunderbird. »

All supported releases of Ubuntu now have Thunderbird 68.x (and will
soon be updated to 78.x), with which the latest release of tinyjsd isn't
compatible, so the package is effectively useless.

tinyjsd should be removed from the archive, in both groovy and focal.

[Bug 1890049] Re: global menu bar no longer supported after 20.04 upgrade

2020-08-03 Thread Olivier Tilloy
While we appreciate this is effectively a functional regression, it is
intended. Exposing firefox's menus to the global menu bar involved a
non-trivial distro patch that was increasingly difficult to maintain
(because it relied on many internal APIs), so it was dropped before
20.04 (see
https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~mozillateam/firefox/firefox.focal/revision/1340).

The firefox updates in 16.04 and 18.04 still carry the patch, FWIW.
