I am affected by this bug. I first noticed during Oneiric Ocelot, but it
happened again today and I am using Ubuntu 12.04.
I've had to switch to a CLI terminal by using Ctrl+Alt+F1 so I could reboot
because that was the only way I figured I could do it.

under Preferences-Playback-Crossfade? That's the only place that looks like
what you are calling 'smooth effect' and I disabled it but still the problem is

I had to declare this bug as "New" again because originally it was declared
"Solved" by Gabriel Genois who is the person responsible for reporting it in
2009, but it was in fact never solved. The symptoms described are the same
ones that are happening when I use Rhythmbox. After I begin using
