[Bug 1804513] Re: Cosmic: Mixxx 2.1.3 is not stable with Qt5

2019-03-29 Thread Owen Williams
Mixxx doesn't follow a stable/unstable release process. All mixxx
releases are considered stable and we recommend users always upgrade to
the latest version. Any release may introduce new bugs, but many more
are also fixed. We do offer point releases for a limited amount of time
to address critical bugs, but most bugfixes are only committed to
master.

The biggest change in 2.2 is linking against QT5 by default instead of
QT4. Mixxx has been working on the migration from QT4 to QT5 for a
while, and as of version 2.1.x, the QT5 build was not ready, so all of
our binaries shipped linked against QT4. Any public release of 2.1
linked against QT5 is a mistake and will result in a bad user
experience.

[Bug 1808957] Re: Dell XPS 13 (9370) defaults to s2idle sleep/suspend instead of deep

2019-02-17 Thread Owen Williams
I'd like the second the suggestion that s2idle sleep not be used at
least on this model until the power usage issues have been worked out.
It wasn't easy to figure out what the problem was and the battery drain
will significantly reduce the lifespan of the laptop for users that
don't know to change the setting.

In general the stream is pretty skippy, so I wonder if there's some sort of

the line in question is, I think:

something here is null, probably because there's a restart happening?

[Bug 1626288] Re: X fonts and widgets disappear after suspend/resume cycle

2016-10-01 Thread Owen Williams
This happens to me too with intel graphics, although not on every
suspend / resume cycle. I'll test the mainline kernel and see if that
fixes the issue. My machine has had issues in the past with SNA
acceleration, this may be another case where falling back to UXA fixes
it.

[Bug 1509776] Re: xubuntu 15.10 synaptics ps2 touchpad mouse cursor jumps

2016-02-03 Thread Owen Williams
I also started seeing this problem after I upgraded to 15.10. I'll be
typing and then the cursor will zip to one edge of the screen or the
other. I'm on a Dell XPS 13 (2013 model). Currently seeing the issue
with kernel 4.2.0-27

My current experiment is to kill syndaemon to see if palm detection is
the issue, and then being really really sure that I'm not touching the
touchpad while I type.

stops producing sound is often accurate. Sometimes just pausing a

[Bug 1325752] Re: All apps become mute when certain apps are opened.

2014-10-06 Thread Owen Williams
It should not be necessary to run pasuspender. Pulseaudio releases its
audio device following a short delay (5 sec?) after the last application
using pulse stops producing sound. So, for instance, if I am playing a
youtube video and run Mixxx, I will notice that my sound card is not
available. If I close the tab with the video, wait a few seconds, and
then Query Devices, my sound card appears and I can select it (no need
to restart Mixxx!).

I think we should work on a feature to detect when pulseaudio has
grabbed devices and show a warning, like PulseAudio is using device
[], please close [list of applications using pulse?] to allow Mixxx
to access it.

[Bug 1311863] [NEW] Reinstall procedure does not delete old kernels

2014-04-23 Thread Owen Williams
Public bug reported:

Apologies if this is the wrong component. I am writing about the
reinstall process that the Ubuntu installer provides as an
installation option.

This option worked great, however it left a number of old kernels in
/boot. It did remove the kernel modules from /lib/modules, but the
kernels themselves still hung around. This caused a problem on my next
boot when one of these old kernels was booted by default (I had been
debugging a mainline kernel) and I had no mouse support because there
were no modules.

If the reinstall procedure is going to delete modules from /lib/modules,
it needs to delete the images from /boot as well.

[Bug 1261753] Re: [Dell XPS 13 (L322X)] Laptop often suspends once immediately after resume

2014-04-22 Thread Owen Williams
I tried testing again with the newest Ubuntu liveCD, and at least in
that environment it works correctly. And the wifi reconnects much more
quickly too. It's looking more likely that this is some strange quirk
of my system which has been upgraded a few times and may have some bad
config hiding somewhere.

Is there an accepted way to reinstall Ubuntu on top of an existing
installation, preserving at least the home directory? Otherwise I'll
just flatten and reinstall and see if that fixes it.

[Bug 1261753] Re: [Dell XPS 13 (L322X)] Laptop often suspends once immediately after resume

2014-04-21 Thread Owen Williams
Still happens. The most consistent way to reproduce is:

* Have laptop plugged in by AC
* Close lid
* Remove AC
* Wait for suspend.
* Open lid, leave AC unplugged.
* Wait several seconds, laptop resuspends

The best workaround is disabling suspend-on-lid-close.

[Bug 1261753] Re: [Dell XPS 13 (L322X)] Laptop often suspends once immediately after resume

2014-01-07 Thread Owen Williams
Another thing that seems related: it used to be that I could close the
lid with AC plugged in, and the laptop wouldn't suspend (that's how I
have it set). Then, if I removed the AC power, it still wouldn't
suspend. Now, if I remove power it does seem to check that the lid is
closed and it suspends.

I think this is related because I can prevent the double-suspend by
either plugging or unplugging the AC adapter before resuming. As long
as I reverse the state versus the power source at the time of suspend,
the laptop stays on.

2013-05-24 Thread Owen Williams
Closing the lid activates the same effect as resting my palm on the
trackpad. In both cases the trackpad is getting multiple contacts

This is literally a two-character fix, it's the same concept as the
previous fix, and it works, what needs to happen to get this moved along
in the bug queue?

[Bug 1048258] Re: Cypress trackpad gets psmouse lost sync / driver resynced warnings

2013-05-06 Thread Owen Williams
As of kernel 3.8, it looks like the function has changed and is now
returning -1 instead of 0:

static int cypress_get_finger_count(unsigned char header_byte)
{
unsigned char bits6_7;
int finger_count;

bits6_7 = header_byte  6;
finger_count = bits6_7  0x03;

if (finger_count == 1)
return 1;

if (header_byte  ABS_HSCROLL_BIT) {
/* HSCROLL gets added on to 0 finger count. */
switch (finger_count) {
case 0: return 4;
case 2: return 5;
default:
/* Invalid contact (e.g. palm). Ignore it. */
return -1;
}
}

return finger_count;
}

my guess is this is causing the same problem as returning 6 was before.

[Bug 888666] Re: terminal doesn't refresh properly with nvidia-current drivers

2012-01-21 Thread Owen Williams
I'm seeing this bug, and I see it in Konsole, not just gnome-terminal.
It makes the terminals nearly unusable. Also note these other bugs that
are duplicates: bug #876055 and bug #880695. It also isn't limited to
ubuntu:
http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/users/2011-November/407928.html
Just google gnome-terminal repaint and you'll see a lot of posts.

This has been reported enough that I'd say there's definitely a problem
with terminals and nvidia drivers. All of these bugs show no activity
whatsoever, but it's clearly a widespread problem that needs attention.

[Bug 410829] Re: [GM965/GL960] Pressing Suspend key turns off display instead of suspending

2011-07-10 Thread Owen Williams
I started seeing this bug in Ubuntu Natty, and I don't know if the cause
was the same but I'm adding my experience here for others that find it
via googling. In my case, it turned out that since the upgrade, my
suspend button was now being interpreted as a hibernate button
instead. There was no entry in gconf for a hibernate command, so it
didn't know what to do.

The error in gnome-power-manager was:

- action: /apps/gnome-power-manager/buttons/hibernate set to blank (The
hibernate button has been pressed.)

Adding a key called /apps/gnome-power-manager/buttons/hibernate and
setting that to the value of suspend fixed the problem

[Bug 792569] [NEW] pulseaudio doesn't see Audio4DJ usb sound card

2011-06-03 Thread Owen Williams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

I have a special usb soundcard, a Native Instruments Audio4DJ -- it is
driven by the usb-audio-caiaq driver. In Maverick it worked perfectly,
but in Natty pulseaudio doesn't seem to know that the card exists. It
doesn't show up as an option in pavucontrol or anywhere else in the
various pulseaudio utilities. It works fine in ALSA (aplay -l, etc all
show the card). And if I specifically define the card in defaults.pa,
it works perfectly.

Part of the problem may be that the card does not present any mixer
controls whatsoever. Some programs, like JACK, get very confused when
mixer controls are absent, so I could imagine this being the problem.

[Bug 207473] Re: Screen brightness double level changes on Dell laptops

2011-06-02 Thread Owen Williams
I still have this problem in Natty. If I kill gnome-power-manager and
acpid, I can still change the brightness (I get all 8 steps that way).
But I get no output at all with either lshal -m or sudo /lib/udev/keymap
-i input/event4 and  sudo /lib/udev/keymap -i input/event5 in this mode.
Is the brightness being changed by the bios?

This is a bug in gtkmozembed that causes excess open-uri signals to be
emitted. I did work around this bug, so try out current SVN and see if
that solves it.

[Bug 41994] Re: closed Laptop Lid to reliably keep Backlight off

2010-07-12 Thread Owen Williams
This bug causes my laptop to get really hot, especially in the summer,
because the screen is acting as a radiator cooking my laptop. The
xrandr workaround isn't working for me because I'm using the proprietary
nvidia drivers. Maybe there's a way to disable any attached USB mouse
or keyboard when the lid closes, which will prevent the screen from
being woken up? that would work I think.

[Bug 591070] [NEW] xrandr fade method fails, just cuts to black

2010-06-07 Thread Owen Williams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I noticed recently that my laptop no longer fades to black when the
screen locks, either from suspending, logging out, or just locking the
screen. I built the gnome-screensaver package and ran test-fade, and
sure enough it doesn't fade, the screen just goes black. If I edit gs-
fade.c and disable the xrandr fade method, the screensaver uses gamma
ramps instead and this results in a proper fade.

This is with nvidia proprietary drivers and compiz.

I'm almost certain that the fades were working previously with Lucid,
this is a recent regression from the past week or two.

[Bug 580333] Re: tomboy notes disappeared

2010-05-31 Thread Owen Williams
I don't know if this is the same bug, but I just lost my primary, most-
used tomboy note (General Todo). This note was so old, the filename
was New_Note_1.note (instead of an MD5 whatever). The file is still
there, but it's 0 bytes.

I restored a version of that note from backup, but I'm pissed because I
update it all the time and I've never lost anything in tomboy before. I
definitely did not accidentally delete the note. This is with Lucid
(non-beta).

[Bug 516494] Re: Tomboy notes printing problem: indentation

2010-03-12 Thread Owen Williams
This bug has been around forever, which led me to believe the problem
was difficult.  On the contrary!

This patch fixes it. Right now the indentation is just 1/3 of an inch,
so someone may want to change that.

[Bug 459277] Re: karmic kubuntu evolution folder select mouse target area miniscule gtk(?)

2010-01-07 Thread Owen Williams
There is more to this bug than just the side bars. It seems that mouse
clicks will often behave as if the mouse is positioned over whatever GUI
widget has focus. IE, if an email address in an email has focus, and I
click anywhere else in the email window, sometimes I get a new window to
that email address as if I had clicked on the email address. Or, if a
folder is selected in the side pane, and I click anywhere in that folder
list, sometimes the selected folder folds or unfolds.

Also, watch the mouse cursor as you move it through the interface. The
cursor does not change correctly when the mouse moves over widgets like
pane borders or URL links.

This is with karmic, nvidia, and compiz.

[Bug 364530] Re: keyboard and mouse freeze after login

2009-09-28 Thread Owen Williams
I think I have a similar issue, although I can use my computer for long
periods of time before I get the input freeze. In my case, the mouse
still works, although it won't click, and I can still press ctrl-alt-f1
to get to a console. And I can still type in the console as well. So
it seems to be strictly an X issue.

[Bug 382792] Re: headphone detection incorrectly mutes additional line outputs on 3stack card

2009-09-04 Thread Owen Williams
Is there any progress being made on this bug? My workaround, to use the
second two outputs and avoid the first, has a big problem. The third
audio output has significantly different sound characteristics from the
first two outputs. It sounds tinny and thin, like it's lacking in bass.
So I can't use that output. As it stands, I don't have a usable way to
have two audio outputs.
