[Bug 1896837] Re: The repository for (php5.6) groovy Release does not have a Release file.

2020-09-24 Thread Paride Legovini
Hi and thanks for taking the time to file a bug report.

Looks like the PPA you are trying to use does not have Groovy builds
yet. You can try asking the PPA owner to enable it.

In general for PPA issues it is the PPA owner that should be contacted.
This bug tracker is used to track bugs in Ubuntu, and while PPAs may
complement Ubuntu they're not part of the distribution. For this reason
I'm marking this report as Invalid.

We may want to discuss if cloud-init should handle errors in writing to

[Bug 1896604] [NEW] Groovy kernel (5.8.0-1004-aws) creates broken /dev/console on i3.metal instances

2020-09-22 Thread Paride Legovini
Public bug reported:

Hi,

When running Groovy daily images on i3.metal instances a broken
/dev/console is created. The char device appears to be writable but
writing to it causes an Input/output error. This is breaking cloud-init,
as it tries to log to /dev/console, and is likely to break other
programs.

On Focal:

root@ip-172-31-24-163:~# ls -l /dev/console
crw--- 1 root root 5, 1 Sep 21 16:07 /dev/console
root@ip-172-31-24-163:~# echo x > /dev/console
root@ip-172-31-24-163:~#

On Groovy:

root@ip-172-31-20-184:~# ls -l /dev/console
crw--w 1 root tty 5, 1 Sep 21 16:03 /dev/console
root@ip-172-31-20-184:~# echo x > /dev/console
bash: echo: write error: Input/output error

The Groovy kernel log has a

[ 3.561696] fbcon: Taking over console

line in it, which is not present in the Focal kernel log
(5.4.0-1024-aws). Perhaps fbcon should be prevented from taking over
console?

[Bug 1895877] Re: proxypass IPv4-over-IPv6 excludes X-Forwarded-For header

2020-09-17 Thread Paride Legovini
Hello and thanks for your bug report.

I didn't try to setup a reproducer, however this sounds like an upstream
limitation of bug of apache2. If this is actually a bug, the actions we
can take in Ubuntu to fix it very much depend on whether the bug has an
upstream fix or not. A first step in this direction is checking if the
bug is still present in Ubuntu 20.04, the latest LTS release. This is a
coarse step, but should be reasonably easy to take and bounds the
problem.

Are you willing to test your setup using proxypass on Ubuntu 20.04 and
report back with your findings? Waiting for your reply I'm setting the
status of this report to Incomplete, please change it back to New after
commenting back and we'll look at it again. Thanks!

[Bug 1895714] Re: Investigate and remove CA pinning

2020-09-17 Thread Paride Legovini
For services that are not meant to be accessible by generic clients but
that are instead bound to a specific client, then I think the best
practice is to avoid the use of a public CA altogether, and rely on a
private CA pinned in the client. This removes the (possibly-not-)trusted
third party from the game and this is what many smartphone apps are
doing, as they're the only consumer clients. The downside is of course
the burden of properly maintaining a CA.

[Bug 1895131] Re: Groovy Desktop *BREAKS* the most common method of creating UEFI bootable drives for Ubuntu installation

2020-09-17 Thread Paride Legovini
Hi,

This bug is affecting the automated ISO testing of the Desktop and
Server images, as UTAH (the test framework) validates the EFI files
contained in the main iso9660 filesystem as part of the ISO static
validation stage. An actual install with UEFI boot is also performed as
part of the test suite, so the EFI files actually used to boot are
tested too.

I was thinking to modify UTAH so it does the EFI static validation on
the actual ESP, however if the EFI copy in the iso9660 filesystem is
going to be retained to support the creation of bootable drives by plain
copy, as this bug asks, then we'll want to validate the copy.

In other words the outcome of this bug will influence if and how the ISO
static validation is going to be fixed. For the moment we'll skip the
EFI static validation stage, so the other tests can run.

[Bug 1895832] [NEW] --testing flag should make pollinate log to stderr even if there's no tty attached

2020-09-16 Thread Paride Legovini
Public bug reported:

pollinate only logs to stderr if there's a terminal attached. This is
implemented by this check:

  [ -t 0 ] && LOGGER="$LOGGER -s"

The --testing option should force pollinate to print to stderr even if
there's no terminal. This is useful to run `pollinate --testing` in
automated environments (e.g. Jenkins) capturing output.

[Bug 1894247] Re: virtual machine locks up when accessing mounted share

2020-09-10 Thread Paride Legovini
Hello Jason and thanks for this bug report. This actually looks like a
kernel issue rather than a bug in the userspace ocfs2-tools. I added a
"linux" (kernel) task to reflect this, and set the ocfs2-tools to
Incomplete for the moment.

[Bug 1894190] Re: snmpd starts before the network stack is fully online (network.target vs network-online.target)

2020-09-10 Thread Paride Legovini
Hello Sebastian and thanks for this bug report.

I think think your analysis is correct, however in my understanding the
only issue caused by this bug consists in logged error messages that
could be avoided if snmpd waited for network-online.target. Can you
please confirm this is the case?

The bug is valid in any case, however its importance may affect how and
where it's best to fix it. For example, if the the issue is purely
cosmetic (dirty logs), then it's probably best to report it in Debian;
Ubuntu and other distributions derived by Debian will then pick up the
fix in the next releases. Otherwise, if the bug affects the
functionality of the package, we'll probably want to fix it directly in
Ubuntu.

this issue is a bug, or to begin working on it, so I am marking this bug
Incomplete for now.

[Bug 1631104] Re: The LimitNPROC line in /lib/systemd/system/openvpn@.service has to be commented out in order to be able to start OpenVPN

2020-09-07 Thread Paride Legovini
Hi,

I quickly tried to launch a Bionic LXD container and setup openvpn using
the Nyr installer. I couldn't reproduce the error, but it's not clear to
me if it's only triggered after a number of clients (try to) connect to
the server, or if the failure happens as soon as the service is started.

To begin investigating this issue we first of all need a reproducer,
possibly a minimal set of steps beginning with a `lxd launch` command
and ending with the command or file showing the error message.

I'm setting this report to Incomplete for the moment as steps to
reproduce or further information are needed to move it forward. Please
change it back to New after commenting back and we'll look at it again.
Thanks!

[Bug 1893064] Re: sru cloud-init (20.2-45 to 20.3-2) Xenial, Bionic, and Focal

2020-09-04 Thread Paride Legovini
Note on the NoCloud KVM/LXD verification logs:

 - nocloud-kvm-sru-20.3-2.txt
 - nocloud-lxd-sru-20.3-2.txt

TestLxdBridge is expected to fail on Focal because the newer versions of
LXD are stricter in how LXD networks can be deleted. This is not a
regression in cloud-init itself, but an incompatibility between cloud-
init and the LXD snap currently shipped with the Focal images. The
problem also affects the version of cloud-init currently in Focal
(20.1-10-g71af48df-0ubuntu5).

This is fixed in cloud-init master
(1f3a225af78dbfbff75c3faad28a5dc8cad0d1e3), but the fix is not part of
this SRU.

[Bug 1872541] Re: MySQL client fails to connect, seems to force SSL

2020-09-03 Thread Paride Legovini
Hi,

As explained by Robie, Lars and me in the comments above this is not a
bug, but an intentional bump in the OpenSSL minimal protocol
requirements for secure connections. For this reason I marked the
mysql-8.0 task as Invalid.

We understand there are cases where a downgrade may be necessary, for
those hopefully rare cases the askubuntu answer linked by Christian
Gutierrez or the very similar workaround proposed by Rafael in comment
#27 are valid, but the real path forward is upgrade the outdated
servers.

I'm leaving the Release Notes task open, as this should definitely be
better documented.

[Bug 1893906] Re: smbclient ignores included config files

2020-09-03 Thread Paride Legovini
Hi Sebastien and thanks for this bug report. The smb.conf(5) manpage
says about "include" lines:

This allows you to include one config file inside another.
The file is included literally, as though typed in place.

so it would be interesting to see replacing those includes with the
actual, literal file contents causes any change in behavior. If it does
it's a good indicator of a bug in the include mechanism, and we should
probably follow-up upstream. If it does not, then we'll need to dig in a
different direction.

Is it only the "client min protocol = NT1" setting that gets ignored in
the second included file, or is it all of it?

I'm marking this report to Incomplete for the moment, please change its
status back to New after commenting back with your findings, and we'll
look at it again. Thanks!

[Bug 1852677] Re: sbuild focal python3 import errors

2020-08-27 Thread Paride Legovini
Hi,

I think this is now fixed in Focal, but still an issue on Bionic.

sbuild-launchpad-chroot doesn't declare an explicit dependency on
python-ubuntutools (or python3-ubuntutools): it depends on ubuntu-dev-
tools and relies on it to pull in the ubuntutools dependency.

However ubuntu-dev-tools from bionic-updates switched to python3, and
stopped pulling it python-ubuntutools, leaving sbuild-launchpad-chroot
broken.

I think sbuild-launchpad-chroot should declare an explicit dependency on
python/python3-ubuntutools across all the releases.

2020-08-27 Thread Paride Legovini
Hello and thanks for this bug report and for the pointer to the upstream
commit implementing -cacheTime and -execType. I can see how those would
bring the functionality back, however they can be considered "new
features", which are rarely introduced with stable release updates, and
with extra care. This will require some discussion.

[Bug 1893118] Re: Unable to exit htop in ubuntu desktop terminal

2020-08-27 Thread Paride Legovini
Hi Tobias and thanks for this bug report. Shortcut clashes are
unavoidable, but I believe terminal emulators should do their best to
avoid taking over the F keys. I was going to suggest you to disable
the shortcut from the gnome-terminal settings, but apparently the
shortcut is not listed there and it is not disabled even by unchecking
the main "Enable shortcuts" checkbox.

I followed-up to LP: #1380194 (a similar bug report) and I'm going to
reassign this report to gnome-terminal. I don't think there's anything
that should be fixed on the htop side.

[Bug 1380194] Re: Terminal emulator opens menu by F10 key and/or opens help by F1 key.

2020-08-27 Thread Paride Legovini
In gnome-terminal 3.36.2-1ubuntu1 (Groovy) the F10 selects (without
"clicking") the New Tab button, for which a keyboard shortcut already
exists. The shortcut can't be disabled from the gnome-terminal settings,
not even disabling all the shortcuts by unchecking the "Enable
shortcuts" checkbox.

I didn't test it personally, but according to LP: #1893118 this is an
issue in Focal too.

[Bug 1893202] [NEW] update-smart-drivedb overwrites package installed file

2020-08-27 Thread Paride Legovini
Public bug reported:

The update-smart-drivedb command overwrites
/var/lib/smartmontools/drivedb/drivedb.h which is a file installed by
the package. This means that reinstalling or upgrading the package from
a SRU may downgrade the drivedb. In general it's something packages
shouldn't do. After running update-smart-drivedb on Groovy `debsums
smartmontools` report that the package has a corrupted file:

/var/lib/smartmontools/drivedb/drivedb.hFAILED

The smartctl(8) manpage says that

  If /var/lib/smartmontools/drivedb/drivedb.h is
present, the contents of this file is used instead
  of the built in table.

So I think we should:

1. Make sure the built-in table is up-to-date with drivedb.h. I suppose
that file gets #included in the code when building, so this should be
the case.

2. Stop installing /var/lib/smartmontools/drivedb/drivedb.h and leave it
in full control of update-smart-drivedb.

Hi, I noticed a couple of things while looking what this is about:

[Bug 1892447] Re: Why ignore new name server if 3 name servers exists

2020-08-21 Thread Paride Legovini
Hi Pengpeng,

I think it boils down to arbitrary choice: we either need to discard the
head or the tail of the list, and the current implementation discards
the tail. I think the most common way to order nameservers is by
decreasing priority, so the current implementation is the least
surprising to me.

Do you have a specific reason to ask for the other way around?

Thanks!

[Bug 1890611] Re: Client cannot connect to remote mysql-server when the latter is configured with ssl parameters using a public CA

2020-08-20 Thread Paride Legovini
Hi,

I'd say that the problem is with mysqld using a different CA certificate
from the one specified by the ssl-ca option. I doubt it's the
letsencrypt certificate the one being used, correct me if I'm wrong (y
can check with e.g. `openssl c_client`).

Could you please:

1. share the ssl config snippet from mysql.cnf?

2. confirm that you don't need the client part to reproduce the problem,
as the "CA is self-signed" message is a mysqld log message that is

[Bug 1891548] Re: autofs-ldap's /etc/ldap/schema/autofs.schema crashes slapd

2020-08-20 Thread Paride Legovini
Hi Michael and thanks for all the digging. If I understand correctly
there are two issues here:

1. The slapd crash due to the caseExactMatch/caseExactIA5Match typo, for
which you submitted a fix upstream [1].

2. The need to "start ; stop ; restart" the slapd service in order to
avoid the "invalid per syntax" errors.

What I suggest is to:

A. Let's wait for upstream to comment on or pickup your patch. We'll
then be able to cherry-pick the fix from the upstream repository. This
makes things easier to manage and give us more confidence on the
correctness on the patch (could be obvious for a ldap/autofs expert, I
am not.)

B. File a separate bug for the "start ; stop ; restart" thing, which
appears to be unrelated. If you do so, please make it clear it's a
Bionic -> Focal regression. Having a minimal steps to reproduce the
issue from a fresh Focal install would be the best.

What do you think?

Paride

[Bug 1882272] Re: fancontrol does not work after sleep/wakeup

2020-08-20 Thread Paride Legovini
I think that a more acceptable workaround would be adding a script to

  /usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep/

that stops the service pre-sleep and starts it post-sleep. See systemd-
sleep(8) on how this can be implemented. I'd then propose it to the
Debian package maintainers; Ubuntu will then pickup the fix.

There's a bug in the upstream bug tracker where this is being discussed:

https://github.com/lm-sensors/lm-sensors/issues/172

but it doesn't seem they have a solution ready.

[Bug 1891301] Re: Ubuntu python-unbound not using Python 2 on Bionic

2020-08-20 Thread Paride Legovini
Hi Christian and thanks for this bug report. I see that unbound is
linked against libpython3.6 (only), so I think it requires
python3-unbound instead of python-unbound.

Note that Python 2 reached its end of life and it's been mostly removed
for the newer Ubuntu versions, python-unbound in particular it not
available anymore in >= Groovy.

I'm marking this bug report as Incomplete for the moment. If you still
think this is a bug and unbound should be able to use python-unbound
then please comment back, change the bug report status back to New, and
we'll look at it again. OTOH if you agree this is not actually a bug
please change the status of this report to Invalid.

Thanks!

[Bug 1891325] Re: package mysql-server 8.0.21-0ubuntu0.20.04.4 failed to install/upgrade: problemas de dependencias - se deja sin configurar

2020-08-20 Thread Paride Legovini
Hello and thanks for filing this bug report. Looks like that mysql
failed to start because its TCP port was already in use:

2020-08-12T12:40:32.253089Z 0 [ERROR] [MY-010262] [Server] Can't start server:

another mysqld server running on port: 3306 ?

This may happen for example when you start the daemon manually, without
using the systemd units provided by the package, which is done e.g. by
calling `systemctl `.

As this doesn't look like a bug in Ubuntu I'm marking this report as
Incomplete for the moment. If you think this is actually a bug please
comment back, possibly providing a minimal set of steps to reproduce it
from a fresh Ubuntu install, and change the bug report status back to

[Bug 1890406] Re: tmux sessions don't show up with who, users, ...

2020-08-20 Thread Paride Legovini
Hello and thanks for this bug report. I am able to reproduce the issue,
which interestingly is not present in Groovy. I installed tmux 3.1b-1
from Groovy on a Focal system and it *does* set the utmp entries, so
something must have changed between tmux 3.0a-2 and 3.1b-1. I had a look
at the Ubuntu (= Debian) changelog and at the upstream commit history.
Focal tmux (3.0a-2) correctly detected the utempter library [1]:

checking utempter.h usability... yes
checking utempter.h presence... yes
checking for utempter.h... yes
checking for library containing utempter_add_record... -lutempter

so that's not the issue. I'm marking this as Triaged for Focal and Fix
Released for Groovy, but in order to push this forward we must identify
the root cause of the issue, then we'll be able to evaluate the
possibility of a SRU.

Debian doesn't not ship tmux 3.0a-2 anymore, so I don't think it's worth
filing a bug in Debian even if tmux is a sync.

[Bug 1888685] Re: rsync fails after installing level 3.2.1

2020-07-31 Thread Paride Legovini
OK, so the directory being in /home is the culprit, I could reproduce
the issue and found where the problem is. At some point rsync added

  ProtectHome=on

option to its service file, /lib/systemd/system/rsync.service. This has been
reverted in upstream git at [1] as it's too restrictive. The fix landed in
rsync v3.2.2 which is already in Debian; Ubuntu will pick it up with the next
sync. In the meantime you can workaround the problem by manually disabling
ProtectHome.

Thanks again for reporting the issue and for providing all the details.

[Bug 1889472] Re: mysql-server-5.7 postinst fails when in read-only mode

2020-07-30 Thread Paride Legovini
Hello Simon and thanks for your bug report and for the detailed steps to
reproduce it. The command causing the error is mysql_upgrade, which can
also be run manually, without triggering the execution of the postinst.

The command has been dropped in mysql-8, as the upgrade is now done
automatically by the mysql daemon on startup.

What you are hitting seems to be a limitation of mysql/mysql_upgrade. We
could avoid running mysql_upgrade if mysql is configured in (super
-)read-only mode, but we'd need a reliable way to check if that's the
case even if the daemon is not running, and still I'd not be really
aware of the implications of skipping the mysql_upgrade runs.

While I acknowledge the situation is not ideal, I'm not sure on how we
can safely improve on your setup.

2020-07-30 Thread Paride Legovini
Hello Nicholas and thanks for reporting this bug. The log files you
attached make me think that you had a running instance of mysqld which
had been started manually - or in any case without using the systemd
unit. For example:

2020-07-29T04:06:16.742135Z 0 [Warning] [MY-011810] [Server] Insecure
configuration for --pid-file: Location '/tmp' in the path is accessible
to all OS users. Consider choosing a different directory.

does not correspond to the location of the PID file location used by
mysql when started via systemctl. A "stray" daemon instance can prevent
other instances from starting, generating the error you hit.

Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem,
rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete.

If indeed this is a local configuration problem, you can find pointers
to get help for this sort of problem here: https://ubuntu.com/support
/community-support

Or if you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it
helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem,
explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem
specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New.

2020-07-30 Thread Paride Legovini
Thanks for this bug report. The problem can be reproduced by running the
following in a fresh Focal LXD container:

  apt update
  apt install mariadb-server
  apt remove mariadb-server
  apt install mysql-server

At this point mysql is in a very broken state. Its systemd units looks
masked:

  # systemctl status mysql
Unit mysql.service could not be found.

and this is why trying to remove it with:

  apt remove mysql-server-8.0

fails, as the uninstall process tried to `systemctl stop` the service.
This is the error this bug report is about, but it's worse. If at this
point we purge mariadb:

  apt purge mariadb-server-10.3

it will also delete the mysql user, which at this point should be
"owned" by mysql - and possibly other things.

It seems that a Conflicts relationship between the two packages is not
strong enough. Maybe Breaks could avoid this?

[Bug 1888685] Re: rsync fails after installing level 3.2.1

2020-07-30 Thread Paride Legovini
Hi Cliff,

This is odd, but if I understand correctly you have a setup that
triggers the problem and a slightly different setup that does not, on
the same system. This means we are in a good position already. I'd
follow Christian's suggestion and make them even more and more similar
until you can spot what actually triggers the problem.

E.g.: Can you move /mnt/testrsync to /home? To /home/cliff? Can you
rename it to Bin?

Sounds silly, but there *has* to be something that makes it work with
/mnt/testrsync but not with /home/cliff/Bin.

Thanks for your follow-up comment and analysis in LP: #1605948, we are
however not able to do debugging work or provide support for non-Ubuntu
distributions. If you are able to provide steps to reproduce the issue
in a clean Ubuntu system we'll certainly look into it, being glad to
know that fixing it will also benefit the downstream distribution.

Should you do so I suggest you to file a new bug, referencing this one

[Bug 1883156] Re: bionic-live-server images stuck seeding snapd at early boot

2020-07-29 Thread Paride Legovini
OK, I set this bug back to Fix Committed, thanks for looking into this.

I like the idea of patching subiquity so it doesn't assume a seed.yaml
is there, as it's not a broken configuration by itself.

[Bug 1883156] Re: bionic-live-server images stuck seeding snapd at early boot

2020-07-29 Thread Paride Legovini
Hi,

While the new livecd-rootfs unblocked the snapd seeding, it seems that
it triggered another problem later in the subiquity install process.

The 20200729.1 bionic-live-server-amd64 image now fails to install
because /media/filesystem/var/lib/snapd/seed/seed.yaml is missing. The
full install logs are attached, however the interesting bits should be
at [1].

The MP [2] with the tentative fix for this bug does touch how seed.yaml
is generated, so the two things are likely to be related.

Big warning: this issue is NOT hit by the by automated ISO test as they
skip the SnapList subiquity step because of [3]. This means that images
are getting promoted but they are to be considered broken.

[Bug 1888780] Re: package mysql-server-8.0 8.0.20-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: el subproceso instalado paquete mysql-server-8.0 script pre-removal devolvió el código de salida de error

2020-07-27 Thread Paride Legovini
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I tried to reproduce this problem in a fresh Ubuntu Focal install by
installing mysql-server-8.0 and then mariadb-server with the same
commands you gave as they appear in the attached DpkgHistoryLog:

  apt-get install mysql-server-8.0
  apt-get install mariadb-server

but I couldn't: the uninstall/install went smoothly. I also couldn't
spot other obvious problems in the logs you attached. There isn't really
enough information here for a developer to confirm this issue is a bug,
or to begin working on it, so I am marking this bug Incomplete for now.

If you can provide exact steps so that a developer can reproduce the
original problem, then please add them to this bug and change the status
back to New. Thanks!

[Bug 1832182] Re: systemd unable to detect running apache if invoked via "apache2ctl graceful"

2020-07-24 Thread Paride Legovini
Hi RedScourge,

the attached patch is a bit dirty, probably because it has been
generated by diffing apache2ctl from different package versions, and I
think it has a bug: you call

  systemctl start "$APACHE_SYSTEMD_SERVICE"

in the 'restart|graceful)' case stanza, while we want 'systemctl reload'
there. I'd also move the need_systemd detection logic out of the "case"
to avoid duplication. For the rest I think your proposed solution is
essentially correct, thanks for providing it.
