Caused by manual `sudo apt-get upgrade`
I think fixed using
`sudo update-alternatives --config python`
to select Python 2 (my default is python 3.5)

ok: found the steps to reproduce - first here are my python versions:
$ sudo apt-get install python-pip
$ sudo update-alternatives --config python

Observed when attempting to connect to Wireless network on an Ubunutu
System that has otherwise been very stable.
Attempting a large download for the Ubuntu software updates appears to stall.
Other websites appear to return on data also.

I updated to 12.10, so will restore the kernel to the version packaged with

restored to stock Ubuntu 12.10: Wifi and battery status are showing fine

The values look fine once the desktop has booted.

I have managed to move onto a stock Intrepid kernel from the kernel

to have worked.
I don't get the expected GUI upon crash and var/crash is entirely empty.
