[Bug 1240198] Re: [SRU]Wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop

2015-10-11 Thread Paul Hoell
I tried the steps to test the proposed package, but the dconf key is not
available on my system and thus has no output. The system language and
keyboard are set to German in both cases.

[Bug 1174313] [NEW] Account creation window is empty

2013-04-29 Thread Paul Hoell
Public bug reported:

When i try to add my ICQ account to empathy, the window where i used to enter
the account details is empty, except for Abort and Done.
The details to this account should have been saved from a previous, working,
state but this is empty too. The same happens when i try to re-add the account.

I'm on 64bit 13.04 + proposed.

I attached a screenshot of the account creation window, sorry for the
german locale, but the bug should be apparent.

[Bug 752033] Re: Music player should not show its main window if it launches when play button is pressed

2012-12-21 Thread Paul Hoell
This still happens more than one year later with Rhythmbox. A quick
glance at the manpage of rhythmbox-client suggests, that the necessary
behaviour could be possible with it.

If the maintainer(s) of indicator-sound agree, this could specify for a
Papercut.

You can close the bug, it's invalid with the PPA for 64bit Flash gone.

But out of curiosity, what more did you need? I told you how i got the
issue, in which package and file the typo is, i even told you how to fix
it...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
 http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
 http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

 At a minimum, we need:
 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
 problem,
 2. the behavior you expected, and
 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
 Thanks!

[Bug 843798] Re: Setting empathy status via messaging menu deactivated when autostarting empathy

2012-03-17 Thread Paul Hoell
That is not true Bilal. You mistook my meaning. I was never talking
about any setting for autoconnection. I was and still am talking about
the problem, that when you put empathy in the autostart, the status
changer in unity's indicator don't work.

This still happens in 12.04 btw.

Please revert your status change.

[Bug 843780] [NEW] Selected input device (mic) not saved until next session

2011-09-07 Thread Paul Hoell
Public bug reported:

I have following audio set up on my desktop pc:
A 4.1 system at the back connectors
A headset at the front connectors (mic muted via switch on the cable)
A Logitech C270 web cam which acts as an USB audio input device

For the most part, i want my input source to be the web cam and not the
headset's mic at the front mic jack. So i select it in the audio configuration.
It works fine until i reboot my machine.
At that point the selected input device is switched back to the Internal Audio
with the front jack as source.

This is very annoying and inconsistent behavior, because the system
should remember which device i selected and should keep it as default
until i select another one or the selected one is not available any
more.

If you need any furter information, i'm happy to provide anything you
need.

[Bug 843798] [NEW] Setting empathy status via messaging menu deactivated when autostarting empathy

2011-09-07 Thread Paul Hoell
Public bug reported:

I usually prefer my IM application to start automatically in the
background at boot time. So i it up in start-up applications in the
system preferences using /usr/bin/empathy -h as command line.

Empathy starts fine at boot and connects to various networks. But the status
switching via the messaging menu is grayed out, while being still available via
the application window itself.
The only way to resolve this, is to start empathy manually after the system has
finished loading.

I also tried without -h which would be the default behavior when
starting manually, but that doesn't change the behavior with autostart.

[Bug 843804] [NEW] Numlock gets deactivated when grub2 loads

2011-09-07 Thread Paul Hoell
Public bug reported:

I have a desktop machine, and i prefer to have numlock activated at all
times, so i set that behavior in the UEFI of my Asus board.

The numlock then activates correctly at start time, but is only active
until grub2 loads, at which point it deactivates and stays off until i
reactivate it manually. This is very annoying and should not happen. The
setting should not be messed with, when there is no way to control the
behavior from inside the system.

[Bug 843804] Re: Numlock gets deactivated when grub2 loads

2011-09-07 Thread Paul Hoell
I'm a little confused concerning the correct package. because it seems the only
package installed on my system is grub2-common.
Out of instinct i reported against grub2 which is a dummy i then found out,
grub-pc is also not installed...

Sorry for the confusion, i hope this can be corrected. The report itself
is valid regardless of the package.

Hey dino, thanks for confirming, but this not exactly the behavior i see
here.

If i activate numlock between grub and lightdm, it stays activated until
the next reboot. It only deactivates once, and that is when grub loads.

[Bug 433651] Re: Chat window grows beyond screen bounds - no text wrap when typing in the message entry

2011-09-07 Thread Paul Hoell
This is NOT fixed in oneiric, at least not in version 3.1.90-0ubuntu1
which is the most recent available.

I won't mess with the settings, as this affects a lot of people, but the
bug is still valid, the text box doesn't expand vertically, only
horizontally and the chat window resizes accordingly.

[Bug 843927] [NEW] Main window inactive at creation

2011-09-07 Thread Paul Hoell
Public bug reported:

The situation:
I have a running instance of empathy, hidden in the messaging menu. Whenever
i want to open the main window to start a conversation, i have several ways to
get there: messageing menu, pinned icon in the launcher, calling the dash and
typing the name.

In all those cases, empathy's main window shows as expected, but never
gets the focus, so you have to click it first to be able to use the
menu.

There is only one other instance where this happens, and that is if i
call the running instance of google-music-frame (using gnome's web-app
functionality) via the dash. It does not happen if i call GMF via the
sound menu.

Everytime the problem with the focus appears, the window controls of the
corresponding window are grayed out, even though they work fine. The
stay grayed out, even if i focus the window manually. I attach a small
screenshot of the controls.

[Bug 771875] Re: Compiz Screenshot renders blue overlay on screenshots

2011-09-07 Thread Paul Hoell
I also found this bug in up-to-date oneiric with compiz version
1:0.9.5.92+bzr2791-0ubuntu2

It seems to work better with a pause, but not consistently. Also if i
release the mouse button very fast, i get the attached pic.

Btw, i remapped the key for screenshot to Super+Shift+Mouse so it doesn't
conflict with Unity. That was the only change.
I'm on a new installation of oneiric with the old /home, but i already deleted
all compiz and unity related config a few times after installation because of
other problems.

The reporter looks to use german locale, which is also true for me.

[Bug 838063] [NEW] [oneiric] Some keyboard shortcuts don't work in gcalctool

2011-08-31 Thread Paul Hoell
Public bug reported:

Keyboard shortcuts found not working in gcalctool 6.1.5 are as follow:
F1
Ctrl+Q
Ctrl+W (maybe obsolete)
Ctrl+Z
Ctrl+Shift+Z
Alt+letter for the menu
F10 for menu
probably some more i forgot to check.

What works:
Alt+F4
Strg+C|X|V
Alt+F9
and most other wm shortcuts.

There are some old bugreports for a very similar problem which has been
fixed...

I just had the same problem when doing a totally fresh install of

I did a pretty standard install, except, the target was an USB HDD. I
created only one user, but the files .bashrc, .bash_logout and .profile
didn't get copied over to the new user's home.

[Bug 810398] [NEW] Typo in /usr/lib/perl/5.10/List/Util.pm makes compilation fail

2011-07-14 Thread Paul Hoell
Public bug reported:

I tried to install the new version of flashplugin64-installer from the
sevenmachines PPA today when this error popped up. I don't know if it's related
though...
The error message was debconf: Perl may be unconfigured (Unrecognized
character \x05 in column 39 at /usr/lib/perl/5.10/List/Util.pm line 27. with
some follow up errors.
The error stopped dpkg from processing anything else. Removing of perl is not
an option, too many things depend on it.
Checking the file in question, it was either a typo or a problem with the
charset, which, in my case, is de_AT@UTF-8.

I fixed the typo and the compilation was successful, fixing the error. I
made a small diff of the files to easily fix it. Is there something else
i can do?

diff /usr/lib/perl/5.10/List/Util.pm /usr/lib/perl/5.10/List/Util.pm~
27c27
 XSLoader::load('List::Util', $XS_VERSION);
---
 XSLoader::load('List::Util', $XS_VRSION);

Edit: More info. The broken file comes from package
flashplugin64-installer of sevenmachines/flash ppa. I would change the
associated package, but it won't let me, because it's no official ubuntu
package. Sorry to the perl guys, but that's where apt-file found the

The search goes on.

The problem arises again, whenever i try to install a package. After the
failed installation, i fix the file again and the install finishes
correctly.

So, i actually have no clue where the bug comes from, and why the file
gets overwritten without any action concerning perl itself, but it does.

In the meantime, how about a way to disable the recommendations in the

That wouldn't bother unconcerned users and help people who have a
problem with the current state, after the introduction of the safe

search function.

[Bug 753453] [NEW] Pressing Super-W to switch windows also presents Dash

2011-04-07 Thread Paul Hoell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Action: Press Super-W to present all open windows, select an inactive window
with mouse to switch.
Expected behaviour: the windows get switched.
Actual behaviour: The windows switch and after the switch the Dash is opened,
likely because the Super key is detected twice.

Additional info: This only happens when i press the two keys shortly after each
other. When i let a second pass after pressing Super it is only triggered once.
This feels really awkward and breaks my concentration quite frequently.

[Bug 704833] Re: Dropbox isn't shown in indicator-applet - uses notfication tray instead

2011-03-15 Thread Paul Hoell
I like Sebastian's idea of implementing the systray as an indicator-applet
which just packs them in a menu. I'd find it immensely more useful than the
black-/whitelisting of applications.
Anyone sees a conflict with the goal of app-indicators?

[Bug 200127] Re: ubuntu incorrectly believes I enjoy staring at progress bars

2009-06-20 Thread Paul Hoell
@Loic
I read the posts, but I'm quite unfamiliar with Windows, but from what I
remember and I see at work where I have to use it, the last thing we should do
is mimic that sorry thing of an os...

The problem with opening update-manager on another desktop is, that the
checking progressbars still pop up above my active window on my active
desktop not on the one where update-manager is running.
Don't get me wrong, I'd appreciate a function to minimize to tray during
updates, but don't force it there.

What I meant before was, the progressbars wouldn't matter if they
weren't so intrusive and you shouldn't be noticed by a running update-
manager except it needs user intervention or is finished. Be it in the
tray or on the active desktop

[Bug 200127] Re: ubuntu incorrectly believes I enjoy staring at progress bars

2009-06-19 Thread Paul Hoell
I think some you still don't understand the issue here...
It's not about showing a progressbar or anything, it's about the current
behaviour of update-manager's windows. They keep popping up in front of the
active window without needing any attention. And after finishing, there is no
hint that it's done.
They way I think'd be most usefull is: You start the updateprocess, which
integrates the progressbar in the main window of update-manager. Then you can
either watch it or send it in the background. If you choose the second option,
update-manager stays there until the updates are finished, without fishing for
attention for nothing and gives a window-manager hint for errors and when
finished.

[Bug 303601] Re: REISUB is broken

2009-03-04 Thread Paul Hoell
I wanted to tune in with a partial success, but first things first. I'm
on Kubuntu Jaunty 64bit and sysrq (which is FN+Del on my notebook) is
mapped to the same keycode as the print button (FN+Ins) which causes
MANY screenshot utilities to start. Even 'xev' shows the button as
print.

With some playing around I found, that the magic sysrq combinations work if I
start the combo with Alt-Fn-Del-R,E,I,S,U,B instead of Fn-Del-.
The funny thing is, alt+sysrq+k still won't work, just REISUB.

Ok...
There are 2 lines to change, one in the install file and one in the

there already, but commented out, so you just have to switch the #...
It compiles and installes nicely and seems to work as well. Cheese recognizes

[Bug 183619] Re: [hardy/intrepid] wlan0: AP denied association

2008-08-21 Thread Paul Hoell
Hi
I installed Kubuntu Intrepid some days ago and everything worked fine for some
time, but today after booting, my wireless stopped working.
I can't connect to any AP, neither WEP, nor w/o encryption.
dmesg repeats
'wlan0: privacy configuration mismatch and mixed-cell disabled - disassociate'
all over...
Usually I use knetworkmanager to connect, but I also tried with iwconfig and
via editing /etc/network/interfaces, but both didn't change anything at all.
I can scan for the APs and loading the module gives no error.
Any ideas how to solve this monster? Preferably without the need for a working
internetconnection ;)

[Bug 215529] Re: WiFi card is slow in 8.04 beta 5

2008-05-07 Thread Paul Hoell
Is there anything new on this issue? Did you resolve it somehow?
I have the same problem on a laptop with a Ralink Chip that uses rt2500pci.
Connection is limited to 1 Mb/s, is slow and the signalstrength is weak.
This is with the driver from the 2.6.24-17-generic Kernel.
I tried the daily CVS from
http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/wiki/index.php?title=Downloads dated to May 7.
but I don't get any connection at all.
Any ideas for a solution?

Re: [Bug 200980] Re: [KDE4] Konqueror doesn't load startpage on start

2008-03-25 Thread Paul Hoell
At the normal Konqueror settings. There was nothing out of the ordinary.
I already removed KDE for now, because there where still a few show stoppers
for me. I'll try again at a later development state.

[Bug 199787] Re: [KDE4] in Konsole sudo can not execute programs (e.g. kate)

2008-03-11 Thread Paul Hoell
Same problem here.
I use Hardy-KDE4 64 bit and there is no way for me to execute kate or kwrite
with su-permissions. kdesu gives the same error (command not found).
My Path is the same as Daniel's
(/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin)
but it seems kate-kde4 (which is also known to the system as kate) is located
in /usr/lib/kde4/bin/kate which is obviously not in the path.
It works as normal user, so it seems the problem is restricted to the root-path.

[Bug 199787] Re: [KDE4] in Konsole sudo can not execute programs (e.g. kate)

2008-03-11 Thread Paul Hoell
I tried adding /usr/lib/kde4/bin to my path, but that just works for the
userpath.
So echo $PATH now shows
'/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/kde4/bin'
but it still can't find kate.
The strangest thing is, that tab completion for sudo kaTab shows kate, but
when i to execute it won't find it.
Executing sudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/kate directly does work though...

[Bug 200980] [NEW] [KDE4] Konqueror doesn't load startpage on start

2008-03-11 Thread Paul Hoell
Public bug reported:

System: Hardy 64 bit
DE: KDE 4.0.2
All fully patched
On startup I expect Konq to automatically load my startpage (www.igoogle.com in
my case, but that doesn't matter which).
As it is now, it not only does not load it, but it shows the last domain I was
on in the adressbar, which I have to load manually to be able to go to my home.
I attach a screenshot for better understanding.

[Bug 192465] Re: 8.04 compiz crashes after upgrad 2.6.24-8-generic

2008-02-16 Thread Paul Hoell
I can confirm the issue and I think I found the reason for it.
Snip of the Xorg.0.log:
-
(II) LoadModule: glx
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libglx.so
dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libglx.so: cannot open shared object file: No
such file or directory
(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libglx.so
(II) UnloadModule: glx
(EE) Failed to load module glx (loader failed, 7)
-
There seems to be a typo in the path to libglx.so
This is from turox' log, but mine shows the same mistake.

[Bug 187969] Re: Cannot select default keyboard layout in gnome-keyboard-properties

2008-02-02 Thread Paul Hoell
Same issue here
My standard, and actually only, layout is german, but since the upgrade to
hardy today it's always US after login. I can change it back if I go to the gui
and drag-drop the language (german dead grave acute) in the same window it
already is.
At the next login, it's set to US again.
Versions are the same as above.
