[Bug 1139563] [NEW] No boot time display (blank screen) for ATI RS880M Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series in Ubuntu 12.10
Public bug reported: Unstable support for ATI RS880M Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series in Ubuntu 12.10. Issue 1# Harddisk encryption is enabled, when it boots there are no messages, it goes to blank screen. Encryption password prompt is not working (i.e. not even blind entry). Pressing Ctrl Alt F1 followed by Alt F7 brings about the graphical console display. Issue 2# GL drivers are not available. Very messy, as no acceleration whatsoever. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd ati boot fglrx graphics radeon ** Tags added: fglrx ** Tags added: amd ati boot graphics radeon -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1139563 Title: No boot time display (blank screen) for ATI RS880M Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series in Ubuntu 12.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1139563/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

i followed downgrade instructions, brought X11 down altogether, had to recover and remove fglrx-legacy. with older X11 and NO fglrx-legacy it seems to works somehow but no OpenGL again. will try driver install from zip file 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS880M [Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series] [1002:9712] Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device [1025:0360] Kernel driver in use: radeon On 2 March 2013 13:43, Anton Kanishchev 1139...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote: Thanks for the quick response Pav. To use the open source radeon drivers you would need to uninstall the proprietary drivers either from the gui (Software Sources, drivers tab) or by running (if you have flgrx drivers installed) the commands below in terminal (search in dash or ctrl+alt+t as a shortcut): sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev* I assume you installed the drivers from inside 12.10 and did not install them manually, is this correct? I would recommend that you back up your data (home folder) just in case (good practice, you may need the backups one day), so that you don't lose your documents if you have to reinstall the OS.
