I'd say a simpler but still useful thing would be to make sure that if some hardware isn't compatible at the time of release because a proprietary driver is required (and that's the situation here - Unity doesn't work on Nouveau), then a big, red note of that should be made in the release notes

Kernel compilation produces a lot of warnings and it's ok, as long as it gives you a 'final product' in the form of .deb packages. Errors (as opposed to warnings) will stop the compilation and not produce a .deb package. To remove packages installed via build dep, you can use this helpful tip:
