I've installed gvfs 1.20.3-0ubuntu1.1 and other gvfs* packages with the same version that come with it from trusty-proposde under Trusty (Ubuntu 14.04) on both my PC and laptop and so far (second day of using it) I haven't been hit by this bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/517021 Title: gvfsd-metadata causes 100% CPU usage To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gvfs/+bug/517021/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 517021] Re: gvfsd-metadata causes 100% CPU usage
Also, I don;t think that the current incarnation of this bug is filling my HDD. When I open the ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata folder in the file browser it is evident that a few files are constantly being generated and then erased ad nauseam. So there is no disk space eating problem, just the HDD (and laptop battery) straining problem. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/517021 Title: gvfsd-metadata causes 100% CPU usage To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/517021/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 517021] Re: gvfsd-metadata causes 100% CPU usage
I would like to add that I don't think that the original bug reported with this bug report, is identical with the way this gvfs-metadata bug behaves in its later version as running rm -rf ~/.local/share/gvfs- metadata stops the infinite disk writing for just few minutes and that it starts again. Not only does it put the HDD under a strain (especially SSDs), it also kills the battery on laptop devices quicker especially when an ordinary HDD is used. The finding that the bug is easily reproducible with the Super Start firefox extension is interesting. I'm using a similar extension on both my machines where this bug appears; it's Speed DIal [FWD] in my case. Some previous bug reports mention that the bug is triggered when using HTML5 Video Everywhere - another firefox plugin. Is it possible that some of the libraries used by firefox produce files (or do something else) that than somehow confuse gvfs-metadata and force it to go into infinite writing loop?! If so, can this be also a firefox bug? Not that gvfs-metadata shouldn't be able to handle such situations. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/517021 Title: gvfsd-metadata causes 100% CPU usage To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/517021/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 517021] Re: gvfsd-metadata causes 100% CPU usage
John Paul Adrian Glaubitz (glaubitz) what use do I have that this bug might have been fixed around gvfs_1.22 when the Ubuntu 14.04.1 that I currently use uses gvfs (1.20.3-0ubuntu1) released 2015-02-02 and this bug is still present in it?! For those that need a temporary fix for this bug, use the sudo chmod -x /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-metadata (makes gvfs-metadata non executable) command, but be warned, after doing this nautilus tends to forget some settings and tweaks. For instance, on my computer, the desktop icons ( I have show desktop icons enabled) tend to be moved on the left side of the screen (in random order) on each system restart (this will definitely happen if you erased the file(s) in ~/.local/share/gvfs- metadata). The fix can be reversed with sudo chmod +x /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-metadata (makes gvfs-metadata executable again).
[Bug 1272613] Re: evince-thumbnailer crashed with SIGSEGV
Any news on fixing this bug? Can someone guide me with step by step instructions to generating crash report files for this bug as I'm hit by it in the most dreadful way. Browsing my directories containing pdf files (actually pdf books) crashes my computer, resulting in a blank screen, a blinking led light indicationg hard disk activity after which all I can do is press the reset button and restart the computer. I've been hit by this bug for the first time almost a year ago when I was still using Ubuntu 12.04. At that time the crashes were so bad that i couldn;t even start the computer unless I unplugged the electrical cord since the computer simply refused to boot up again after pressing the power button to turn it off and then pressing the power button to turn it on again. At that time I was convinced that it might have something to do with: a) a failing harddrive b) a failing power supply c) a failing motherboard I assumed option a) because I have multiple HD-s installed into my computer. I use one of them specifically for storing ebooks (most of them in pdf format). But then i realised that this crashes appear even during a generation of pdf thumbnails on my main HD - the one that has the operating system and my home directory on that at the time I started having this problem was only a month old. Also I was getting kernel messages about disk i/o errors labeled with date/time that coincided with the crashes. Since I have 4 HD-s in my system and the crashes happened during pdf thumbnail generation for files on each of them, I ruled out this assumption about a failing HD. Then I moved on to analyzing assumption b). I presume that having installed 4HD's in a system with an older power supply that was already built in the computer case that I bought at the time I bought the parts for my computer(which equals to a very cheap and mediocre power supply) could be the reason for the crashes. Since the crashes came soon after I installed yet another HD (a fourth one) it sounded reasonable that maybe the weak power supply is the culprit for the crashes. After making multiple tweaks with the HD cables (changind the PATA ports) etc and temporarily disconnection some of the disk I finally decided to purchase a better power supply since I was a bit desperate and since it would have been a cheaper purchase than buying a new motherboard. This didn't work either. Then while looking for a new motherboard to buy - this is a core2duo system and motherboards compatible with my processor and My DDR2 memory are no longer easy to find I suddenly remembered that I added some pdf related PPA to my system at the time that i started experiencing the crashes. This was almost 3-4 months after I started having the crashes. I uninstalled the PPA and suddenly the system crashes disappeared. Although I still find it unbelievable that a user space program can bring the system to its knees, it seams that this was the exact case!!! After this I decided to be more careful with adding untrusted PPAs. I even got the impression that the PPA package was even tampered with due to the believe in the mighty uncrushable linux. All worked fine on my Ubuntu 12.04.5 system until few days ago I finally decided it is time to do the upgrade to 14.04. Yesterday few days after the upgrade, I needed to look for some of the pdf books stored on my other drive. Since I wiped the thumbnail directory from my home drive after the clean installation of Ubuntu 14.04.1 (I have separate / and home partitions) nautilus has to recreate the pdf thumbnails. As I said most of my pdf files are stored on a separate HD. Most of them are e-books stored in multiple directories named by a subject. Some of the directories contain 4 pdf files, some 20, some 100+. Opening some of the directories containing pdf files work. All of the pdf thumbnails are being normally generated. But certain directories are dangerous to be opened. The thumbnailer manages to generate a few thumbnails and then my whole system crashes. Sometimes opening the same directory after the crash works. The thumbnailer manages to generate the rest of the thumbnails. Just before I sat down to write this comment i thought of new type of test - copying the problematic directories to an external NTFS formated hard drive. The first time I did this, it actually worked. I copied one of the crashy directories to my hd, opened nautilus so that it would generate the thumbnails for the pdf files contasined on the external HD and it workeded. Then I erased that same directory from the internal HD and then copied it back from the external HD. After this operation, nautilus managed to recreate the thumbnails on the internal drive without crashing. But I realized that this will not solve my problem because after my seciond attempt to do it with other directories, MY COMPUTER CRASHED while generating the thumbnails for the pdf files copied and stored on my external hard drive. Thanks god I finally managed
[Bug 1344996] Re: LibreOffice shows squares when the UI font does not support certain characters. It does not fallback to other fonts like the rest of apps.
Adolfo Jayme, You're right! I transfered my locally installed fonts from 12.04 when I installed 14.04 on my laptop, and an old version of Cantarell that I don't even remember where I got from. I think that the problem was fixed by just doing that, as LO started using the system wide installed Cantarell that comes from the Ubuntu 14.04 repository, but I also switched to Calibri just in case. Thank you for your assistance, as I would have never figured this out on my own (I didn't even know that I was using this two fonts specificaly as default system fonts). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1344996 Title: LibreOffice shows squares when the UI font does not support certain characters. I'v been hit with the strange bug for some time in LibreOffice under Ubuntu 14.04 Namely whenever I try to enter some string in LibreOffice Calc using non-latin characters, cyrillic in my case, the entry renders just fine in the cell, but it renders with a series of squares at the formula entry widget. The same happens with the search entry widget (ctrl+f). I'm hit by this bug when using both the default packages from the official Ubuntu repository, the packages from the LibreOffice PPAs but also packages that I've downloaded from the Libreoffice website. The first strange thing I've notied is that those same deb packages downloaded from the LibreOffice website work just fine under Ubuntu 12.04. Today I've done some testing (after removing the PPA packages so that ubuntu-bug would allow me to report this bug), and noticed that if I remove the libreoffice-gtk package, then I don't have this problem any more, except for the non exsistent theming and really ugly looking of LO. I conclude that the problem is not in the LibreoOffice itself but in some gtk library. I'm sending screenshots of the bug. [Bug 932781] Re: [x-updates] Nvidia 295.20 regression - Gnome Shell becomes crashy
The problems I had with the 295.20 and Gnome SHell were resolved with the 295.33 update. The NVIDIA Linux forum presently contains only two bug reports, one about an error in the driver installation script, which probably doesn't concern us because we install the drivers using a package manager, and the other one is about X crashes on a Clevo M571RU-U notebook (with Ubuntu 11.10). [Bug 881955] Re: System monitor freezes up when switching to Processes tab
Packages from the xorg-edgers PPA also made Gnome Shell crash on my computer when switching from Windows to Applications tab. I also noticed increased memory usage on my computer. In normal circumstances 31% of my system memory (out of 2GB) would be used after an X server reset (CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE) and logging into Gnome Shell, but with the PPA enabled the memory usage refused to go under 51% after a reset (I tried it multiple times), and this happened after using the computer for a few hours. But I couldn't see what was using the memory because you know . [Bug 880471] [NEW] Crossfade between tracks option crashes Rhythmbox when flac tracks are played
Public bug reported: When crossfade between tracks is enabled in Rhythmbox and when there is a list of flac tracks are played results in Rhythmbox crash. Not only that, but it crashes the whole Gnome Shell. I have Media player indicator shell extension installed and I don't know if that is somehow connected to the whole Gnome Shell crash. Also worth noticing is that Rhythmbox displays some weird bitrate information for some of the flac tracks. For some of them Quality says Lossless while for others it reports numbers like 43kbps, 370kbps etc. Considering the fact that Nautilus Properties for this tracks also reports the same bitrates maybe the problem is not directly in Rhythmbox but in the GStreamer backend that as far as I know both Nautilus and Rhythmbox use. Maybe mplayer uses it's own internal version of libass that is problematic. -- mplayer uses enormous ammount of memory when ASS fonts are displayed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/656590 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Ok I just visited libass hosting site. It's hosted on http://code.google.com/p/libass/. The release notes for version 0.9.11 says: * Fix serious memory leaks * Reduce frame/drawing initialization overhead In Maverick we have version 0.9.9. -- mplayer uses enormous ammount of memory when ASS fonts are displayed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/656590 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 656590] [NEW] mplayer uses enormous ammount of memory when ASS fonts are displayed
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mplayer When movies are played with ASS fonts enabled like with this command: mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau -ass -embeddedfonts The\ Girl\ Who\ Leapt\ Through\ Time.mkv mplayer uses huge amount of RAM memory. The same problem appears both with fonts built into the video stream and also when using external .srt fonts when they are transcended to ASS by mplayer. I believe this is a regression because i have never had this problem with mplayer in Lucid or in previous versions of Ubuntu. lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 10.10 Release:10.10 apt-cache policy mplayer mplayer: Installed: 2:1.0~rc4~try1.dsfg1-1ubuntu1 Candidate: 2:1.0~rc4~try1.dsfg1-1ubuntu1 Version table: *** 2:1.0~rc4~try1.dsfg1-1ubuntu1 0 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/universe i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10 Package: mplayer 2:1.0~rc4~try1.dsfg1-1ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.36-0.1~xorgedgers1-generic 2.6.36-rc6 Uname: Linux 2.6.36-0-generic i686 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia Architecture: i386 Date: Fri Oct 8 01:43:59 2010 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat - Alpha i386 (20100831.2) ProcEnviron: LANG=en_US.utf8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: mplayer ** Affects: mplayer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 maverick -- mplayer uses enormous ammount of memory when ASS fonts are displayed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/656590 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 635475] Re: [Maverick] Auto eth0 not working after latest package upgrade
Yes eth0 and T-Home are both ethernet connections. The difference is that my T-Home connection is set with my providers username and password and when I use it, my computer gets a public IP internet address (it's like using the router in modem mode). -- [Maverick] Auto eth0 not working after latest package upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/635475 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This happened to me again. I got disconnected, and the list of configured connections disappeared from Network Manager. I ran the command you provided and they reappeared again (auto eth0 and T-home in my case) so I could click on one of them and connect again. Still I have no idea what is causing this, but I know that this is not happening only to me. I found this on Ubuntu Stackexchange website. http://ubuntu.stackexchange.com/questions/4014/ If you visit the link, you'll see that a user named msw encountered the same problem. No, I don't use Windows or any other OS other than Ubuntu. So we can rule that out too. [Bug 635475] Re: Auto eth0 not working after latest package upgrade
Mathieu it is fixed for me, but the problem is that there is something that is causing it. This happened to me again yesterday. Although I know how to fix it manually I am still puzzled about the specific cause of it. It seams that after certain packages are upgraded on my system, some of their post-installation scripts are causing this problem to reappear. So I guess it's up to you. [Bug 635499] Re: [Maverick] Nautilus fails to mount some UDF DVDs properly
@Sebastien Bacher Yes I did read the other bug comment. The think is there are sub options presented once you choose ubuntu-bug storage. After reading the comment and before i realized that the files are after all accessible but not in Nautilus, i tried reporting the bug choosing Removable storage is not mounted automatically. The report that was created contained multiple files and proposed linux as Binary package hint. Unfortunately launchpad was down and i couldn't submit the report. in the mean time I realized that on the contrary the storage IS MOUNTED so next time i tried to report the bug I used Documents cannot be opened in desktop UI on storage device. I think that it is a good explanation for the problem I'm having. But also No permission to access files on storage device might be a valid description too. [Bug 635499] [NEW] Nautilus fails to mount some UDF DVDs properly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gvfs lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu maverick (development branch) Release:10.10 When I insert an UDF formated DVD Nautilus should automount it, and open a window presenting the files contained on the DVD disk. I've read complaints that say that UDF formated DVDs created with Vista are not accessible under Linux/Ubuntu (as Vista uses some specific UDF format). I don't remember where, but one guy was claiming that newer UDF formats store some permission settings and that's why some tweaks have to be made in /etc/fstab have to be made in order to make this kind of UDF DVDs accesible to normal users (instead of only to the root user???) I find this an important hint for where to look for when trying to fix this bug, moreover because I tried accessing the previous mentioned DVDs with the last line in /etc/fstab removed (as it was on a cleanly installed Maverick). I'm getting the same end results, and the only deference is that when the line is removed, the system mounts the DVDs in some other directory. This is what i get when I remove the line and insert another UDF DVDs that is inacessible. dmesg ... [Bug 634668] Re: Nautilus fails to mount UDF DVDs properly
I forgot to mention that I encountered this bug in Lucid too, hence I decided to install Maverick beta only to realize that this is an old bug! But because I wasn't sure if it was a result of some configuration mismatch (my system was upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04-9.10-10.04) I decided to make a clean re-installation of Maverick beta (clean / and /boot reinstalation, /home was preserved because I use a separate partition for it). [Bug 529479] Re: Quadrapassel - ClutterGLX-CRITICAL error
Hm from the last explanation I received this bug might be somehow connected with the graphic drivers. I use Intel graphic card and to quote the explanation given lso, this problem is also real, and I used to run into it all the time. The problem (I think) is with multi-stage Clutter on hardware where Clutter doesn't really support that (i.e. Intel, IIRC)... Can you provide graphic card information if you are hit by this bug? [Bug 570861] [NEW] Quadrapassel not rendered properly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-games When trying to start Quadrapassel from the command line, it starts but I get the following message: (quadrapassel:2206): ClutterGLX-CRITICAL **: Unable to make the stage window 0x240 the current GLX drawable (quadrapassel:2206): ClutterGLX-CRITICAL **: Unable to make the stage window 0x25d the current GLX drawable When I start a new game the elements are not rendered properly but the game is responsive and playable, as opposed to the situation from 2 days ago when the key presses were not very responsive. One of the explanations for the possible cause of this problem is that Quadrapassel is a multi-stage Clutter application as opposed to Lights Off and Nibbles which are not multi-stage Clutter applications . And that it seams that multi-stage Clutter is not supported by all graphic card drivers. I use Intel gma950 graphic card 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) On my computer Lights Off and Nibbles run perfectly normal. I'm also sending a screenshot of Quadrapassel in order to make more clear the bad rendering problem. [Bug 565981] Re: [KMS] gem objects not deallocated
alex you should open a new bug report (even if you believe that it is the patch mentioned here that caused your problem). Open a console and type this: ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg There are certain attachments you should send when reporting problems like this (this list is taken form http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Xorg/Debugging): * All of the X server log file(s): /var/log/Xorg.*.log * If you use a xorg.conf, please include it in the bug report, otherwise, please specify in the bug report that it does not exist. Usually this would be located at /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but see the xorg.conf manpage - man xorg.conf - for other standard locations. * /var/log/Xorg.0.log from a trial run where you move your xorg.conf aside and let Xorg autodetect your hardware (if you have such a file). * /var/log/dmesg (please add drm.debug=15 as boot parameter and reboot) especially in case of crashes and using KMS. * content of /var/log/gdm/ only in cases there is nothing interesting in /var/log/Xorg.*.log and dmesg output but I believe that the command above will do that for you automatically. You can also give some additional information like if you noticed that the crashes happen when you use certain applications. I hope this information will be of any use to you. -- [KMS] gem objects not deallocated https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565981 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 565981] Re: [KMS] gem objects not deallocated
Alexander Bürger you are hit by the bug. The number is negative because object bytes uses signed integer to store its value (I came to this conclusion on my own, so sorry if that is not correct). And because there is a leak, and the number never decreases, it reaches a point when the number overflows (the maximum signed 32 integer value is +2,147,483,647). It seams that the patch proposed here is not present in the official Ubuntu repositories yet. [Bug 565981] Re: [KMS] gem objects not deallocated
Preliminary testing shows that Robert's xorg packages from https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates fix this bug for me too. [Bug 565981] Re: [KMS] gem objects not deallocated
Conn O Griofa I believe you are misinterpreting the results (or the test is not reliable indication of the memory leak). This is how I know that the patch works. I have a System Monitor active in my top panel. Right click the System Monitor and select Memory in Monitored Resources (if not already selected).Below for the Colors option choose Memory and set 5 different colours for User, Shared, Buffers, Cached, Free. What interests you is the colour for Cached memory. Start using your computer. Open Firefox, Office, play a movie and you'll notice that the Cached memory increases. Once your Cached memory takes significant amount of RAM, try executing this commands: sync sudo sh -c echo 3 /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches This should clear the cached memory (not entirely, but I suppose this is a normal behaviour). For instance after executing this command on my system the System Monitors says that 27% of my computers memory is used by programs and 18% is used as cache (it was 31% used by programs, 63% used as cache before the execution). And my system uses the xorg package from https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates, which solves the memory leak problem for me. If there is a memory leak, the previous command will be able the release only small portion of the cached memory. So even if it manages to release half of the cached memory on the first try, this is still an indication that there is a memory leak. Also keep in mind that the system is automatically droping the cache memory from time to time. So try this: 1.Open an application(s) using a lot of memory (OpenOffice Write, Firefox, Gimp etc.) 2. execute: cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/gem_objects | grep 'object bytes' 3. wait for a few seconds (5, 10, 15 sec) 4. repeat procedures 2 and 3 a few times 5. Close the application(s) using a lot of memory 6. Do procedure 2 and 3 (one or two times) If during following the procedure above the object bytes number NEVER decreases then you do have a memory leak. If the number oscillates (for exsample goes up, down, up, up, down) then you are fine and there should be no memory leak. -- [KMS] gem objects not deallocated https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565981 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 560859] Re: My swap memory gets full after 5-6hours of computer usage on 10.04
I wanted to ask you all about what graphic card you have, but I was hesitant because I thought that I might sound stupid. I also have Intel graphic card and I noticed that my cache memory increases by changing to full screen and back to windowed mode in SMPlayer. This is the output of cat /proc/dri/0/gem_objects (taken while there is still memory left, but again an enormous amount used by cache) 1212 objects 789098496 object bytes 3 pinned 23965696 pin bytes 96223232 gtt bytes 260308992 gtt total I have no idea if this is normal or not. The problem is that right now I am using the intel driver from xorg-edgers PPA repository, but I had the same high memory usage problem with Lucid's default intel driver. -- My swap memory gets full after 5-6hours of computer usage on 10.04 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/560859 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Same problem here. I'm interested if you did a clean install or just upgraded from Karmic? Also are you using any additional applications? [Bug 501715] Re: Kernel trace buffer should be cleared and size restored after profiling
Thanks god someone else noticed this high memory usage. I kept asking people on #ubuntu+1 and all I got was: This is normal for Linux. This high caching memory usage would be normal, if my system didn't start using the swap file once the RAM memory gets used by the caching memory. I never noticed this problem in Karmic, probably because I did a clean install and used the vanilla kernels from http://kernel.ubuntu.com /~kernel-ppa/mainline/ in the last 4 or 5 months. Previously (in Karmic) Reclaim memory function in Ailurus would reclaim almost all of the caching memory, but now it fails to do that. Something is eating the memory. This is how my computer behaves: I have 2GiB of Ram installed System monitor reports that 38% of the Memory is used by programs, 62% of Memory is in use as cash, and I have for instance 160MiB used from the swap space (and once the swap is being used, the system erformance is hit seriously). If I try: sudo swapoff -a , the swapoff process dies and the swap partition is not disabled. Why? Because there is not enough RAM memory available to transfer the data contained into the swap partition. But how can this be when 62% of it is free? 62% of 2GiB of ram is a lot more than 160MiB. I even tried uninstalling ureadahead but that doesn't help. So I'm not sure that the problem is strictly located in ureadahead. -- Kernel trace buffer should be cleared and size restored after profiling https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/501715 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 478762] Re: lm-sensors don't work
By the way I forgot to mention that this is not officially a bug. But it's good that we have this workaround.
