Thank you! Although piping getmic.ro is interesting, update for focal

[Bug 1522870] Re: Fan running full when screen is locked and blank on Lubutu

2019-07-14 Thread Vaclav Petras
I can't test that with the same conditions, it no longer affects me,
nobody else marked "it affects me", and a lot happened since then (the
ticket is against 15.04), so I suggest closing this as won't fix.

the same error happens in debian recently after upgrading the qgis-2.99

[Bug 1660645] [NEW] Connecting to unplugged ethernet network after suspend

2017-01-31 Thread Vaclav Petras
Public bug reported:

1. Plug in an Ethernet cable to get Internet connection. (Wireless connections
also present.)
2. Suspend the laptop.
3. Unplug the Ethernet cable. (And move to different location with Wi-Fi only.)
4. Wake up from suspend.
5. Wait few moments to connect to a known Wi-Fi network.
6. Try using the Internet.

The Internet doesn't work, pages load indefinitely. The tray icon shows
the wireless sign in the "connecting" state (animation). The tray menu
shows one Ethernet connection. When I disconnect that one the Internet
connection starts working immediately.

The was not happening with 15.10 but happens to me regularly after
upgrade to 16.04. I have Docker daemon running.

[Bug 1660637] [NEW] Detect displays in Displays does not update or show all resolutions

2017-01-31 Thread Vaclav Petras
Public bug reported:

The Detect displays button in 16.04 does not update the list of
resolutions and ratios.

1. Connect laptop to external screen using VGA. Screen is 16:9.
2. Suspend the laptop.
3. Connect another screen with ratio 16:10.
4. Wake up from suspend.
5. Open Displays.
6. Press Detect displays.

The list of resolutions and ratios should be now updated but it is not.
To use the actual screen ratio I need to unplug and plug the VGA cable.

If I recall correctly, before 16.04 it was enough just to start Displays
and the right resolution/ratio was detected and used.

[Bug 1442105] Re: GPS not working on my BQ Ubuntu Touch

2016-09-13 Thread Petras
how this can stll have the incomplete status? the gps is broken, it does not
work on bq m10. the test_gps in /usr/bin results in segfaults. this is key
feature of mobile (together with sensorsors) to do the cool stuff (not cool is
like reading mail, tweeting, facebook, and other stuff calculating 1+1, at the
moment ubuntu touch is capable only that), else I dont see what I need for the
mobile linux.
I see gps outputs the nmea output. why not use the gpsd as middle layer. it
also would make possible to use bluetooth gps more advanced/precise receivers.

[Bug 1573674] Re: Location indicator appears and reappears continually on BQ Aquaris M10

2016-09-03 Thread Petras
gps on m10 bq is something realy bad. it worked me only once with
osmscout (nokia's maps makes no sense on that device, as it have no
modem). I cant get it work again. even if indicator appears to show that
gps is ok, there is nothing on osm scout or in sensors app (actualy
sensors app then lounched makes gps indicator disapear). Please ubuntu
sort this out, or at least publish the workaround to get gps workng. oh
and by the way, it loks this is not gui but overly fully bad problem as
'/usr/bin/test_gps' segfaults. I wold like to port some GIS program to
ubuntu touch, but without the gps it is pointless. I am wondering if it
wold be possible to use old good gpsd?

[Bug 1610091] [NEW] libertine libreoffice zotero crash

2016-08-05 Thread Petras
Public bug reported:

I have bq M10 tablet, where libreoffice comes as preinstalled in libertine.
While OTA-12 brings the keyboard which is great, still the usabillity of
libreoffice (writer) is lacking as zotero can't be used successfully:
what I tried:
[x] Zotero installs and works in firefox
[x] zotero plugin install sucessfully in libreoffice as extension, and buttons
appear

When as required by zotero firefox is launched, then in libreoffice
clicking any button of zotero crashes the libreoffice.

I am not familiar with mir/unity8. I see that it does have problems with
popup windows. In normal use (on desktop) citing opens instance of
firefox popup window for selecting the citation. Maybe that is the cause
of crashing the libreoffice, as in tablet mode the firefox is inactive?
but it also crashes in desktop mode.

Is this caused by some missing functionality? (popup windows, isolation
of applications, something else?)

[Bug 1530001] [NEW] QtCreator crashes when screen resolution is changed

2015-12-29 Thread Vaclav Petras
Public bug reported:

1. Start QtCreator
2. Go to Displays and change the resolution (and Apply)
3. QtCreator crashes

This happens to me on Ubuntu 15.10 but I think I observed that on
Lubuntu as well. I'm not sure but it might be related to Qt-based
applications in general as I remember vaguely same behavior of some
terminal application which I think was Qt-based. However, this does not
happen with KDE applications, for example Kile survives the change.
QtCreator fails regularly.

[Bug 1523235] [NEW] Evince crashes when PDF is rewritten by pdflatex

2015-12-06 Thread Vaclav Petras
Public bug reported:

When using Evince as PDF viewer for work with LaTeX, Evince often
crashes when pdflatex rewrites the PDF. This seems much likely to happen
when pdflatex ended with an error in normal stop mode (-interaction
errorstopmode). It happens however, in other pdflatex interaction modes
and possibly even when the file is rewritten without any errors
(although less likely).

There are or were similar bugs, namely Bug #36250, Bug #16973, and Bug
#137635, but this one seems different because it is happening only
lately to me and these bugs are old. I was using this workflow in Ubuntu
14.04 and earlier and it worked well. Now I'm using Lubuntu 15.04 and
the crash is almost regular (when pdflatex fails).

I realize that the PDF is invalid, so it is a bad situation for Evince
but in past Evince was able to deal with that. I think it was just
showing the old version of PDF. If it would show nothing it would be
good as well, perhaps even better (but remembering the position in the
document would be useful too).

[Bug 1472792] [NEW] evince does not open with broadway backend

2015-07-08 Thread Vaclav Petras
Public bug reported:

On Lubuntu 15.04, when trying to open Evince with GTK+ Broadway backend,
Evince reports incomplete errors and then ends.

In first terminal:

$ broadwayd -a 127.0.0.1 -p 8889 :2

In second terminal:

$ GDK_BACKEND=broadway BROADWAY_DISPLAY=:2 evince

(There is nothing more in the output, program ends.)

gtk3-demo or gitg have GUI in a browser as expected.

Not sure if related or if it is perhaps expected, but I cannot see the

[Bug 1469905] [NEW] pcmanfm run on 100% CPU, does nothing and desktop is black

2015-06-29 Thread Vaclav Petras
Public bug reported:

Time to time, pcmanfm in Lubuntu starts eating 100% of one core (so in
fact 25% of all CPUs in my case according to lxtask). I don't have any
window running but if I have them, they are still open. I'm actually not
sure if they are still usable (last time it happened I had none open).
Desktop (controlled by pcmanfm by default as far as I know) changes
color to black and resets zoom for icons. Icons are still visible and I
click them and open whatever is associated, right click works as well.

In top I can see:

 PR NIVIRTRESSHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
 20 0 837144 30096 21252 R 100.4 0.8 33:28.82 pcmanfm

You can see 33 hours but I don't think that it is a time because I don't
remember that it would somehow correlate with how long I run the
computer. It can be related to changing resolution or screen, I do this
often.

[Bug 1469175] [NEW] Konsole terminal crashes after changing monitor (xrandr)

2015-06-26 Thread Vaclav Petras
Public bug reported:

On Lubuntu 15.04, Konsole (lxsession-default terminal) and perhaps other
Qt-based applications (noticed with QtCreator) crash with segmentation
fault after changing monitor settings for example from:

xrandr --output VGA1 --auto --output LVDS1 --off --output HDMI1
--off

to:

xrandr --output HDMI1 --auto --output LVDS1 --off --output VGA1
--off

You can see them after the change for a while but then they fail. It
happens every time I change settings. No problem with application like
Firefox, lxterminal, Geany, Kile, PCManFM or Leafpad.

Obviously, it terminates all programs running in the terminals which
messes up whatever one is working on.

[Bug 1274193] [NEW] Nautilus Extract Here interprets backslashes as characters not directories

2014-01-29 Thread Vaclav Petras
Public bug reported:

Nautilus 3.4.2 Extract Here function interprets backslashes as
characters not directories in a ZIP file which probably has directories
saved in some MS Windows way, so that directories are stored using
backslash.

I run Extract Here on a ZIP file and the result are files with backslash
in file name, e.g.

lf78011331_US_DEM/US_DEM\info\arc.nit
lf78011331_US_DEM/US_DEM\us_dem\dblbnd.adf

The expected result is what unzip gives me, e.g.:

US_DEM/info/arc.nit
US_DEM/us_dem/dblbnd.adf

UnZip 6.00 of 20 April 2009 recognizes the directory structure and
creates correct file names and directories.

I had this problem with the attached ZIP file (public domain data from USGS)
with content:
./US_DEM.grid.aux
./US_DEM.prj
./us_dem
./us_dem/sta.adf
./us_dem/prj.adf
...
./Metadata.dbf
...
./info
./info/arc.nit
./info/arc0002.nit
...
./Metadata.prj

(two sub-directories: us_dem and info, everything is in one parent
directory US_DEM)

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2014-01-25 Thread Vaclav Petras
Thanks to the people fixing this bug, in the first place. However, I'm
sorry to put it in this way but Blaster pointed out what is the real bug
which caused this one. It is the strange policy in the Nautilus
development. This might be fixed by changing the policy or changing the
file manager in Ubuntu. Because otherwise, we must ask what will be
next? Removal of Home (/home/user) from the side bar and leaving there
only (My) Documents, (My) Music and (My) Pictures as it is on Mac OS and
some (all?) MS Windows? Removal of possibility to show hidden (.*) files
or removal of list view because everyone wants big thumbnail anyway,
right? ...

I'm sorry to see developers spending their time reimplementing,
debugging and fixing features which already had working implementations
and were removed just few months before. I'm concerned that this state
is not sustainable.

[Bug 1268351] [NEW] Nautilus opens image viewer in foreground but viewer does not have focus

2014-01-12 Thread Vaclav Petras
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 12.04 (with Unity), Nautilus 3.4.2 opens GNOME image viewer
3.4.2 in foreground when I (double)click on the image or open the image
using selection and Enter (speaking about default PNG, JPG, ... file
association). However, the viewer does not have focus. So, I have a
window in foreground which at least partially hides the Nautilus window
but when I press F11 to fullscreen, nothing happens and when I press
Alt+F4, the Nautilus window is closed. So, I lose the currently opened
folder or folders and I have to open the Nautilus window and navigate to
them again.

This is not such a issue when you use mouse only but when you use
keyboard shortcuts it is very annoying. Moreover, it is inconsistent
because it actually happens only when one other image viewer window is
already open.

How to reproduce:

* open Nautilus and navigate to the folder with images
* open one of the images
[now the image viewer is in the foreground and has focus/context]
* switch back to Nautilus
* open different (or the same) image
[now now the image viewer is in the foreground and does not have context]
* try F11
[nothing happens]
* try Alt+F4
[Nautilus window in the background is closed]

This might be in fact the problem of the GNOME image viewer and not
Nautilus, from user point of view they are very connected.

[Bug 379367] Re: Gedit adding a newline at the end of file should be configurable

2014-01-12 Thread Vaclav Petras
Can someone clarify the status of this bug report? I can see Invalid
Fix Released seems really strange and there is no explanation how it was
fixed (sorry, I'm not able to understand the proposed patches).

Is there any other way how to changed it except for:

  gsettings set org.gnome.gedit.preferences.editor ensure-trailing-
newline false

or its GUI equivalent? Is there a option in Gedit preferences for this,
so that it is visible to all users without searching online? Was the
design decision reconsidered according the confusion it creates? See for
example:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3056740/gedit-adds-line-at-end-of-
page

Was the fact that that most of Gedit users are developers which want to
take care about these things them selves or see the current state in the
file? What is the current default?

Thank you, I would say that explanations at the end of tickets avoids
opening duplicate tickets in the future.

[Bug 1033226] Re: No close option, only restart

2014-01-10 Thread Vaclav Petras
This was mentioned here almost 59+1 times already but anyway, it seems
that it needs to be said again. The soft requirement to restart was one
of the Ubuntu selling points. Removing the Restart later button (which
was the defaut) accompanioned then by soft reminder -- a red turn off
button (in Ubuntu 12.04) is a terrible mistake which will disappoint
current Ubuntu users and will not atract new users (if they like the MS
Windows behavior they will stay with MS Windows and will not move to
Ubuntu just to experience the same forced update/restart policy). The
security concerns should be expresed by soft reminders such as red turn
off button (or check box I'm avare of the risk + check box Mark
restart later as defaut button).

From the fact that still in Ubuntu 13.10 it is possible to quit the
application from the panel without any further reminder of the need of
restart (e.g. the mentioned red trun off button), although the close
button is disabled and Restart (now) is the only and perhaps also
selected button, can be infered that security is not such a issue here,
but this is a just naive end user guess (which will turn into usage
patter of course since it is how it goes).

[Bug 1264610] [NEW] Can't install 'ubuntu-desktop' during upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04

2013-12-27 Thread Vaclav Petras
Public bug reported:

During distribution upgrade (10.04 to 12.04) from update manager
(approximately at Setting software channels step) I got an error
dialog:

Can't install 'ubuntu-desktop'

It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a
bug using 'ubuntu-bug update-manager' in a terminal.

This is similar to bug #40552, which was closed as won't fix. Although,
10.04 is not supported, I report this issue because the behavior is
different. It is actually better. I don't get the additional dialogs and
it is possible to continue in installation. However, the original reason
for problems is still here and the question is if this issue will repeat
also for 12.04 to 14.04 transition.

Adding files from /var/log/dist-upgrade/ as attachments as requested (at
least main.log, term.log is empty and Launchpad allows me to add only
one attachment for initial report submit). Correction: system adds files
automatically, so noting that the added main.log is after continuing the
upgrade for a while.

[Bug 1225556] [NEW] Saving in DOCX format truncates the file

2013-09-14 Thread Vaclav Petras
Public bug reported:

1) Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS

2) LibreOffice 3.5.7.2, Build ID: 350m1(Build:2), probably package
1:3.5.7-0ubuntu4 but apt-cache reports none

3) Edit and save DOCX file
open DOCX file
edit DOCX file
save DOCX file
close
open the file

4) the file is truncated
e.g., 9 pages instead of 16 but it can truncate anywhere on the page

It is actually known bug at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47782
but I think that it is important to also backported into 12.04 LTS once it is
fixed (or at least some warning that 'this really does not works' is added)
since data loss is critical. File to reproduce it is provided at freedesktop
ticket.

The latest version of LibrreOffice is 4.1, I haven't tested if this
happen there too.

[Bug 1157253] [NEW] Gedit does not restore open tabs after crash correctly

2013-03-19 Thread Vaclav Petras
Public bug reported:

When Gedit crashes a bug report is generated and a dialog offers to
relaunch application. If I choose to relaunch, a gedit window appears,
however all tabs contains empty files. Only file names are correct. (It
seams that all files are gone.)

In other words, only filenames are used instead of full path to restor
tabs.

In the crash report, there was a command line key with the value with
only file names (not with paths).

The possible reason could be that gedit was launched form cmd line not
in home folder but the restored is launched in the home folder. (All
files has the ~ in the brackets, so user can discover that these files
are not files which were open.)

Note: The crash is not related to this ticked. This is bug is about
restoring after crash.

[Bug 1071644] [NEW] Graphviz DOT graph not recognized in Nautilus

2012-10-26 Thread Vaclav Petras
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS
nautilus:
  Installed: 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1.2

I have a text file -- Graphviz DOT graph -- which contains something
like this:

/*
My nice comment
*/
digraph G {
...

Nautilus shows the type Word template instead of Graphviz DOT graph.

Deleting the comment and having graph/digraph keyword on the first line
works as expected -- file type is recognized.

Another issue which is probably easy to fix (and thus, maybe, no need to create
an report for it) is that Graphviz DOT graph file type has no associated
application by default. But it is obviously gedit since DOT graph is a text
file.

[Bug 396589] Re: Keyboard shortcuts to switch tabs

2012-10-26 Thread Vaclav Petras
Alt+Left/Right Arrow is really nice but unfortunately, Kile is the only
app which I'm using where it is like this (and the only KDE app which
I'm using). So even though it is a really great shortcut which is maybe
better than Alt+Number or Ctr+Tab, I need one of them to control Kile
conveniently. (Anyway thanks humker for mentioning this shortcut, I can
start using multiple tabs in Kile now).

Possibility to change the short cut would solve the problem. Even better
would be if Ubuntu Kile package has a default settings with Alternate
(shortcut) set to appropriate value (Switch To Next Tab = Ctrl+Tab).

For example Firefox and Chrome allows to use both Ctr+Tab and Alt+Num on
Ubuntu. And to make the overview complete: Alt+Left/Right Arrow is Go
Back/Forward in those browsers. Alt+Up/Down Arrow does nothing while in
Kile it is Go To The Previous/Next sectioning command.

[Bug 1058515] [NEW] inheriting environmental variables when creating new terminal window or tab

2012-09-29 Thread Vaclav Petras
Public bug reported:

If I create new terminal using gnome-terminal command (in terminal), it
inherits environmental variables from the old terminal as any other
application does. But if I create new terminal using Open Tab or Open
Terminal, I get a fresh terminal. This is sometimes what I want but
sometimes not.

I miss the possibility to copy environmental variables from the old
terminal to the new one. Option in preferences would be ok. But some way
to switch the behaviour quickly would be better.

For user there is no difference between the new window/tab and gnome-
terminal command. Only the inheriting of environmental variables.

I also noticed that there is no option to preset environmental variables
for the terminal. Some combination of Profiles and .bashrc file. However
this is a different bug but probably connected, so that why I'm
mentioning it.

Ubuntu 10.04, GNOME Terminal 2.30.2

[Bug 670085] Re: Clearlooks theme changes by itself

2012-08-28 Thread Vaclav Petras
Hi, sorry for digging this out but I have the same problem on Ubuntu
10.04. Human-Clearlooks randomly changes to something which is similar
to theme at the screenshot (Selection_001.png). For some windows only
button and icons are affected but in most cases window borers are
affected too.

For the first time simple start of Appearance dialog switched everything
back but after some minutes especially the squared corners appeared
again. For the second time change of the theme helped but not for
Nautilus even after closing all its windows (I suppose because it is
still running).

I'm experiencing this for one day.

[Bug 421118] Re: external keyboard not working until replug

2011-01-20 Thread Rich Petras
I'm having this same problem on Lucid kernel:
Linux version 2.6.32-27-generic (buildd@roseapple) (gcc version 4.4.3 (Ubuntu
4.4.3-4ubuntu5) ) #49-Ubuntu SMP Wed Dec 1 23:52:12 UTC 2010

The mouse part of the system works from system startup, the keyboard
does not, until it is replugged. If a second keyboard is plugged into
the system, it works fine from power on.
