[Bug 1764417] Re: Unrecoverable failure in required component org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Color.desktop

2020-01-27 Thread Phil Ayres
Following up on my previous comment, after removing Chrome Remote
Desktop three weeks ago I have not had any crashes on login. That old
program (which Chrome didn't register as being installed, but was
running in the background) seems to be the source of the issue for me.

[Bug 1764417] Re: Unrecoverable failure in required component org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Color.desktop

2020-01-06 Thread Phil Ayres
Very similar issue to the other reports. I see this every few days when
I login. Typically I go to Nautilus, mount an encrypted FUSE drive, open
Chrome, then randomly the session just dies. Interesting, my dual
monitors are reversed so the order of them is wrong (left is on the
right, and vice versa). Restarting seems fine.

OS: Ubuntu 18.04.03
Kernel: Linux 4.4.0-148-generic x86_64 Ubuntu
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz × 8
Graphics: GeForce GTX 1060 6GB/PCIe/SSE2
GNOME: 3.28.2

I also have the Chrome Remote Desktop installed. I'll try removing it.

Relevant syslog attached for reference.

[Bug 1436090] [NEW] kernel BUG at /build/buildd/linux-3.13.0/mm/slub.c:3365!

2015-03-24 Thread Phil Ayres
Public bug reported:

Periodically (every few days) I'm hitting this kernel bug, which causes
the session to close and drops me back to the login screen. If I attempt
to login it does some stuff (usual screen flashes) then drops me back to
the login.

It seems to be when I'm doing something related to an item on the top
Unity panel. I thought for a while it was when I was trying to activate
Skype from the icon it places in the panel (so I assumed Skype was at
fault). But I've just had it happen too when attempting to pick Sound
Settings from the audio panel icon.

I'll be happy to provide other information if I can.

[Bug 762918] Re: Natty Screensaver freezes system after some period of inactivity

2012-03-09 Thread Phil Ayres
Just like appier, I have experienced this with Xubuntu 11.10 too. I'm
therefore not in a hurry to blame Compiz. I moved to Xubuntu because my
performance with the regular Ubuntu / Unity mix on one PC led to
slowdowns (fewer complete lockups).

I'm trying the power management tricks, as I think that is the most
likely, and ties with my experience so far.

Add to this some other triggers based on the discussion:

1) in the past I've had some nasty experiences with ecryptfs home directory
encryption causing OpenOffice / Libre Office failures and other nastiness.
2) things only seem to get bad once I start hitting the page file (too much
Gimp work)
3) if I get to Ctrl Alt F1, then after a few minutes I get a message that
Chrome is being killed (or at least certain windows within the browser) since
it appears to have run away
4) similarly, Thunderbird gives me messages about long running scripts
5) CPU may not always run away, but if I do sudo iotop then I'll see kswapd0
hogging the system (or possibly just indicating that something else is
desperately trying to switch / fork and failing?)
6) I also run Banshee a lot
7) Flash performance is dire on this PC (surprised? not really)

I was trying to blame Chrome or Thunderbird, but I think this is either
ecryptsfs (again), power management on this Intel barebones system, or
some scary background process that doesn't report failures in dmesg.

[Bug 569818] Re: massive memory leak, evolution-data-server

2011-10-24 Thread Phil Ayres
Like I said over on bug 648618, I quite using evolution because of this.
Unfortunately you can't apt-get purge evolution* if you want a clock on
your desktop. So I wrote an app indicator so I could completely remove
the leaky evolution stuff from my system:

[Bug 648618] Re: evolution (e-calendar-factory) memory leak

2011-10-24 Thread Phil Ayres
I finally updated to Ubuntu 11.10 and scrapped Evolution because of
this, and some other annoyances. Completely scrapped it. Unfortunately
that meant I had no clock on my panel, as the Evolution data server is a
dependency (hmm, poor segregation of duties there). I wanted a clock, so
I uninstalled evolution (sudo apt-get remove evolution*) and wrote my
own clock applet (first time developing an appindicator or Python). So
if anybody else suffers from this, moves to Thunderbird and Lightning
and wants to purge everything Evo, you can do so, and still know what
day of the week it is. If anybody is interested, see:

Ian,
Out of interest, are the checksums that are different on zero byte files? I saw
that hinted elsewhere.

[Bug 745836] Re: soffice.bin crashed with SIGSEGV in cppu::throwException()

2011-09-22 Thread Phil Ayres
Scott, is that fix in base 11.04? I have been away from my pc for a few
days and my 11.04 ubuntu was still crashing libre office before this.

I believe that people see a crash when the system is inactive for a
while due to inactive libre office apps being swapped out. High ram
usage just accelerates the issue appearing.

This is the only app I have seen that seems to crash routinely due to
ecryptfs, so I still thing partial blame (or poor exception handling)
should be attributed to the open office stack.

Since I'm one of the contributors who has worked hard to try and
identify the encrypted home issue and has stuck with these apps longer
than necessary (I'm using google docs now as I can at least write a two
page doc without 5 crashes) I would prefer you avoid just calling this a
rant.

Anything I can do to help (simple instructions) would be useful. Debugging to
this point has been impossible for me.

[Bug 648618] Re: evolution (e-calendar-factory) memory leak

2011-09-05 Thread Phil Ayres
I've been struggling with this bug since upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 then
11.04. I'm on 32 bit Intel, kernel 2.6.38-11-generic
Evolution is whatever version is current right now. I have two Google calendars
configured and I've stopped using the Evolution UI in the hope that I can avoid
this issue (its better without the UI, but the calendar panel must be killing
this).

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Continuing my previous thought, if it would help the developers directly
identify the problem, I'm happy to set up a couple of Google calendars
in my corporate Google account, so they can play with this directly.
Just let me know.

[Bug 654429] Re: evulution leaks memory

2011-07-25 Thread Phil Ayres
I'm struggling with the same problem. In case it helps others make a
connection, I'm using IMAP to pull from two Google email accounts,
calendar and contacts. I am not using any other email accounts in
Evolution, so I think this might help to limit the scope a little.

Just simply running htop while using the program seems to indicate a
jump in memory usage every time I open an email (even if I have opened
it previously). Also, I have just forced Evolution to download all my
messages for Offline Mode, and memory is staying pretty much flat. These
both suggest that it is an email opening / formatting issue (the
formatting message when an email is opened is up for much too long in my
opinion, even with a very simple email).

I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 to 11.04 in the last week, so I know that
things should be very up to date.

Just in case it matters, I'm using an ext4 partition with ecryptfs
encrypted home directory. I only mention the encryption, since it has
crashed Open Office since the day I set it up, and appears to have
strange effects when programs start to swap.

I'm not using Tracker, but am using Google Desktop for search, just in
case that actively hooks into Evolution in some way.

I've never touched Valgrind, but if somebody could point me at an easy
guide to set it up against Evolution I'd be happy to give it a test.

[Bug 814329] [NEW] package initramfs-tools 0.98.8ubuntu3.1 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-07-21 Thread Phil Ayres
Public bug reported:

I was running an upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 (all successful) to 11.04.
I got to the final steps of the upgrade when this error appeared that
initramfs-tools failed to install and that my system might be in an
unusable state.

I haven't tried to reboot yet, but I'm hoping that I'll be back in and
this was just a glitch. Given the opportunity to report this, I chose
to, since this is not the kind of error most people want to be seeing.
If its a duplicate, or I'm just being stupid (not sure how I had
anything to do with this, but still...) just ignore me.

[Bug 579966] Re: OpenOffice crashes with high frequency with $HOME on encryptfs

2011-06-29 Thread Phil Ayres
SereiS

Interesting! I had changed swappiness from the default of 60 (I think)
to 10, to make the desktop feel more responsive. I did this before
eCrtypfs, so I don't think it is that. It is one area that should be a
complete black-box to application though, shouldn't it? I mean,
shouldn't OOo be able to handle swapping?

I can't even debug OOo, so there is not a hope my limited dev skills
will allow me to dig in and fix the code. I will happily help somebody
(anybody?!) with testing once a fix comes along.

[Bug 579966] Re: OpenOffice crashes with high frequency

2010-10-29 Thread Phil Ayres
I just tried a quick test to remove encrypted swap (I had set ecryptfs
to encrypt my original swap partition, and its now disabled at startup).
Running OpenOffice with unencrypted swap and files on encrypted home and
OOo still crashed as before.

I'll continue to investigate. Maybe I'll be brave and dig into ecryptfs
in more depth. Maybe I have some real work to do before I get that
brave...

Re: [Bug 579966] Re: OpenOffice crashes with high frequency

2010-10-28 Thread Phil Ayres
Cameron,

Good work. A quick question to help me get things straight. Is your home
directory encrypted, or is it just the documents folder where your open
office documents are stored? I'm going to retest my previous scenario to
see if OOo crashes if I use my standard profile and an unencrypted
folder, since yours didn't seem to.

Also, do you use Evolution for email? If so, does that crash for you at
odd times?

[Bug 579966] Re: OpenOffice crashes with high frequency

2010-10-19 Thread Phil Ayres
Another step in the right direction...

With my unencrypted test home directory I created in the previous
comment, I can now focus in on the problem a bit more. I'm running OOo
under my standard username (phil), but changing the HOME environment
variable before running the ooffice executable:

export HOME=/home/testooo
ooffice

When I check OOo options, I see that all the paths are pointing to a
subdirectory of /home/testooo. Just to double check, I moved the
.openoffice.org directory out of the way on my home/phil directory, just
to check its not recreated. It is not.

To focus on where the problem is, I've been editing a document stored on
my encrypted home directory (/home/phil/...) and have not crashed once.
As ever I've stressed the box hard, but that has not triggered a crash.
So the error, in my opinion is only when reading or writing to the
.openoffice.org directory on an encrypted home. If my actual documents
are on the encrypted home, I have not (yet) seen a crash, so the
location of the documents themselves is unimportant.

No surprise I suppose. OpenOffice probably hits its config directory a
lot, especially when you switch back from another application and type
some new text. Why it should matter that the box is stressed and the
config files are on an encrypted home, I don't know yet. I am going to
find a way to get some more information.

[Bug 579966] Re: OpenOffice crashes with high frequency

2010-10-14 Thread Phil Ayres
I have had some success. After failing to get any decent debug
information despite following all the guides I could, I went for another
approach. I've not solved the problem entirely, but I have shown that
this is not a hardware related issue.

I followed the instructions for creating a chroot with a basic Ubuntu
installation (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BasicChroot), installed
a few basic packages (nano, ssh, sshfs), set up the en_US UTF-8 locale
(http://blog.andrewbeacock.com/2007/01/how-to-change-your-default-
locale-on.html), which was necessary to install the Java dependency of
OOo. I also had to add some repositories for apt to pick up OpenOffice.
Now I have a self contained, very clean Lucid chroot'd inside my
standard Lucid. Finally I installed openoffice.org-ubuntu and openoffice
.org-human-style. I used sshfs to allow me to link to my standard user's
home directories (I didn't want to mess with mounting the ecryptfs homes
inside my chroot'd environment, plus I don't really know what I'm doing
and it sounded scary).

I have run for three days straight, heavy usage, with multiple apps and
forcing the system to run out of memory and start swapping. No crash on
the chroot'd OOo, and multiple crashes on the standard environment that
I kept open just to observe the difference.

I've removed some variables to my investigations (OOo can run on my
hardware without crashing), and added some more (is the issue ecryptfs
on ext4, since now I'm running effectively against a different file
system type). But at least I feel like there is an end in sight...

[Bug 579966] Re: OpenOffice crashes with high frequency

2010-10-14 Thread Phil Ayres
Further progress on tracking down the cause -- I can demonstrate that it
is related to an ecryptfs encrypted home directory. At least in my
case...

To demonstrate it, I created two new users, one (testoooe) with an
ecryptfs encrypted home directory and the other with no encryption
(testooo).

I logged in as my standard user (phil) and ran each of the following in
turn from a gnome panel launcher:

first with no home encryption
 gksu -w -u testooo ooffice
and I've been running fine for hours, forcing the system to run out of real
memory, jumping between applications, no problem

then with home encryption
 gksu -w -u testoooe ooffice
and I stress the box and instantly kaboom it crashes.

So, OOo appears not to like home directory encryption with ecryptfs. I
tried pointing all my standard paths in the options to the unencrypted
user's .openoffice.org profile (after a chmod to allow me access), and
it still crashes. So what on earth is different?

At least this seems to have ruled out a broken library on the system.
But I still don't know what the error is. Since ecryptfs isn't quite as
invisible to programs as it should be at times, maybe this is the
problem.

I'm open to offers for other things to try.

[Bug 579966] Re: OpenOffice crashes with high frequency

2010-10-05 Thread Phil Ayres
I have another data point for this bug, which hopefully isn't a red-
herring.

I see that when I experience a crash, when running atop the SWP line is
highlighted red. As I understand it, this means that I have tried to
overcommit the virtual memory available. I have been experimenting with
swap space to see if this helps, and so far I am doing OK.

The two things I have tried: adding an extra 1GB swap (I have 2GB real
memory); reducing the swappiness setting. I used the procedures
described in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq

Who knows if swappiness does anything really, but I can see that having
more swap space will prevent me hitting a fundamental memory limit when
I'm running a bucket load of apps, VMs, etc. Perhaps the OOo error is
just a failed memory allocation, which might explain why it always seems
to happen under high load, especially when swapping between apps.
Evolution seems to do the same thing sometimes, which makes me wonder if
I was just over-extending the resources, and the errors just didn't
bother to tell me this.

I'll keep you posted.

[Bug 579966] Re: OpenOffice crashes with high frequency

2010-09-20 Thread Phil Ayres
After my wifi red-herring (I think this was just a cover for the real
problem that is when OOo will crash when it is forced to page due to low
physical memory, which is 100% reproducible for me), I'm trying the new
PPA Brendan and Cameron have been trying.

I forced the system to page, running an Imagemagick convert (convert
100page.tif new.pdf) on a large document. As soon as I killed that
process (paging was excessive) I returned to OOo. I saw Writer attempt
to start an autosave, then it crashed as before. This was a single,
simple document saved in ODT format. I wonder if it was related to the
autosave attempting to run when memory is paged, or if it is just a
matter of OOo trying to access something that it expects to be available
instantly but takes longer to pull back due to paging. This would
explain why maybe I see this a lot, as I typically have a VirtualBox VM
session chewing a bunch of memory, plus some other apps running.

Either way, this PPA doesn't fix it for me.

[Bug 579966] Re: OpenOffice crashes with high frequency

2010-09-08 Thread Phil Ayres
I had a bad day yesterday. A bunch of crashes again. What was happening?
Two things different from previous days: 1) I had plugged in a new USB
CD-ROM drive, and it was filling dmesg with log messages, and 2) I was
running imagemagick and forcing a bunch of applications to page as it
consumed all the memory.

I will see if I can reproduce the problem today. This really feels like
a problem that only affects some people due to the type of hardware or
specific activity unrelated to OOo that the software is sensitive to.

I'm running an Intel Atom CPU, 2GB RAM, Ubuntu 10.04, ext4, ecryptfs
encrypted home directory. I will try and run with the LiveCD to see if
the problem persists.

Sorry for being so bullish previous. Spoke too soon on the wifi thing it
seems.

I can consistently recreate that crash through forcing the system to

Brendan_P and Cameron, I wonder whether disabling through the hardware
is sufficient? Have you also tried right clicking the Network Manager

is different?

Anyway, I'm still hopeful in my fix. I haven't crashed for several days

[Bug 579966] Re: OpenOffice crashes with high frequency

2010-09-01 Thread Phil Ayres
Maybe I have another data point, and not just a me too...

I have been struggling with OpenOffice crashes for a long time now on
one PC running 10.04 (my little netbook on Ubuntu 9.10 is fine). I've
tried both Ubuntu and vanilla version of OOo with the same effect -
swapping applications back to OOo after a length of time causes the
crash.

Yesterday I removed a slow Intel 5100 wifi card from my PC (this was an
ill advised add-on). I had been struggling with the iwlagn wifi driver
being unreliable for ages, and finally got round to rewiring to get a
direct ethernet connection from my router. Anyway, for the first time in
months I have run all day long without an OpenOffice crash. With
multiple documents open, with all the activities I do still being done.

Really could this be related to a piece of network hardware? This might
explain why people are seeing different results on different machines -
a different wifi card, or different driver version perhaps. Maybe OOo or
one of its components tries to chat to the network unnecessarily during
certain events and it gets confused. Either way, I hope my luck holds
out.

I don't know if just disabling the wifi would have the same effect, but
that might be a worthwhile test for somebody out there.

[Bug 591952] Re: OpenOffice 3.2.0 crash due to interference from another Java application in Lucid

2010-08-04 Thread Phil Ayres
For me, OpenOffice typically crashes after copying text in an Evolution
email. I disabled Hyphenation in OpenOffice, since that hit me once with
an automatic hyphenation happening. But in general it feels that the
error happens when I switch between applications with Alt-Tab and swap
back to OOo. Its possible that I have stuff on the clipboard, since
that's often why I've been jumping around. I've seen errors reported
with copying of HTML from browsers based apps with rich text editors
such as TinyMCE, which also run a lot (in Chrome). Also, it seems worse
if I have an image showing on a Writer page when I swap between apps.

Probably doesn't help cut down the list, but I've been struggling with
this for ages, both in the Ubuntu distribution release and the vanilla
version of OpenOffice. I tried Abiword as an alternative, but that
actually corrupted a document for me this afternoon trying to save to
DOCX format (after about only 24 hours use), so that won't work for me.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and OpenOffice 3.2 (both Ubuntu release and
vanilla release), and I hate the crashes all the time. I have no
problems, even on a little netbook on Ubuntu 9.10 NBR and OOo 3.1. Shame
its so hard to type on!

[Bug 455421] Re: rhythmbox crashed with SIGSEGV in g_object_set()

2010-07-28 Thread Phil Ayres
I see a similar issue in Lucid, up to date as of yesterday's updates.

In syslog I see this at the time of the crash. I included the pulseaudio
ratelimit message just before, in case it is relevant.

Jul 28 12:28:51 consected-sv1-001 pulseaudio[1670]: ratelimit.c: 130 events

Jul 28 12:29:17 consected-sv1-001 kernel: [15882.976141] __ratelimit: 6

segfault at 0 ip (null) sp b233e16c error 4 in
libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0.2000.1[11+93000]

One thing I observed is this seems to happen more often if I change the
volume soon after opening Rhythmbox and just after starting to play a
track. Perhaps it doesn't like a change in volume at the same time a lot
of other things are going on, such as trying to get a bunch of data
streamed.

[Bug 277578] Re: ecryptfs does not work properly over nfs, cifs, samba, or aufs

2010-07-27 Thread Phil Ayres
I'm not sure if this is related, but I tried ecryptfs with .private on a
Rackspace cloud storage filesystem (cloudfuse) and it would crash the
file system every time (http://github.com/redbo/cloudfuse/issues#issue/4
). I'm sure this is a problem on the file system side (which shouldn't
just crash), but this obviously sounds related due to the observations
for other remote file systems. At worst, consider it just another data
point.

Let me know if I can help testing in any way.

I just saw something odd happen that may be related. I was using Skype
and it started to see lost incoming packets, which is normally a sign
for me that I'm about to lose the wireless connection. Today it held on
by its fingernails and suddenly kicked back in. dmesg showed:

[Bug 352228] Re: Intel Wireless 5300 AGN: iwlagn: No space for Tx

2010-06-29 Thread Phil Ayres
I've just experienced this bug for what I believe is the first time. The
syslog from the first entry that shows a problem is included below. I
have the cheaper and nastier Intel 5100 card and had previously fixed
most of my wifi problems by disabling ipv6 at boot (see my response to
bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+bug/548992 ). Unfortunately this
bug seems to occur when I make a Skype call for any length of time - not
high bandwidth (5kbps), just extended constant activity.

To get stuff started again, I right click on the Network Manager icon,
disable networking, then re-enable.

[Bug 548992] Re: Wireless connection frequently drops [deauthenticating by local choice (reason=3)]

2010-06-01 Thread Phil Ayres
Me too with a workaround (yes, I'm very happy!):

I'm on Lucid with with kernel 2.6.32-22-generic, running an Intel 5100
wifi card and iwlagn driver. I was getting the two minute 'no probe
response' error like the bug creator (see my syslog below). I fixed it
on my machine by disabling IPV6 in the kernel at boot time by adding

ipv6.disable=1

to my kernel boot line in grub, then doing a

sudo update-grub

My wifi has sped up incredibly (speedtest.net showed almost double what
I was getting previously) and the annoying disassociation has stopped
(now I can use Skype without 4 seconds of dropped packets and silence
every 2 minutes).

No guarantees, and obviously if you depend on ipv6 you're kinda stuck,
but maybe it will help somebody track down the issue.

[Bug 548992] Re: Wireless connection frequently drops [deauthenticating by local choice (reason=3)]

2010-06-01 Thread Phil Ayres
Oh, just to finish my though, I'm on

WPA2 personal, with a NetGear router running at 11 / 54 Mbs (b or g).
Network Manager seems fine. I never had any problems in the past with
the wired LAN, and the Intel 5100 card is brand new, albeit offering a
pretty puny signal strength compared to the netbook I have across the
desk from it.

[Bug 580076] Re: Problems with multiple Streams

2010-05-21 Thread Phil Ayres
Here's a screenshot showing the problem. You'll notice in the second
column (messages for all accounts) there are both Twitter and Facebook
messages appearing, but the background color for all of them is the
same. In the first column, this appears to show differently. Strangely,
in neither column does the color appear to match that configured for the
account (see the colored icons at the bottom for what I would expect to
see).

The version is: 2.30.0.1

Let me know if you need anything else.

[Bug 546359] Re: nouveau does not work with nVidia G94 [Quadro FX 1800]

2010-05-20 Thread Phil Ayres
For anybody else that has been struggling to get a Dell Latitude D800
with Nvidia Go 4200 geoforce card running, due to nasty distorted
graphics and mouse on the splash screen and in Gnome, the suggestion to
add the blacklist option to the grub loader worked perfectly:

blacklist=vga16f

I wish this was in the standard Lucid upgrade and LiveCD from the start.
But there you go...

Thank you!

[Bug 546359] Re: nouveau does not work with nVidia G94 [Quadro FX 1800]

2010-05-20 Thread Phil Ayres
OK - so I feel stupid now - sorry for all the repeated comments.

I apparently needed a new kernel to get this to work, not the blacklist
I mentioned above. Bug #518387 talks about a new kernel being worked on
that clears up some KMS issues (I think). I added the kernel from the
PPA mentioned at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/518387/comments/2
and now I have working Nouveau on all the different bootable drives I
have running Ubuntu 10.04.

Also, for anybody who is moving from the original nvidia proprietary
drivers, I had to backup my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, then do a sudo Xorg
-configure before moving the ~/xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11

It seems to work, even though X seems to consume a lot of CPU now when
anything on screen moves.

[Bug 518387] Re: vga16fb sometimes claims fb0 before kms driver, a causing blank screen on boot

2010-05-20 Thread Phil Ayres
Hey, I just tried the new kernel mention by Bryce in the second comment.
I'm running an old Dell D800 with nvidia go 4200 card, and neither the
10.04 liveCD nor an upgrade from 9.10 allowed me to run with the Nouveau
driver.

After updating the kernel from the PPA, I am now the proud owner of a
Nouveau running D800. Admittedly, the kernel update does not start gdm
automatically, sending me to a text prompt, but a quick login and sudo
service gdm start seems to work fine. I hope these changes made it into
the final release of the .33 kernel.

I just wanted to tell the world, cos (a) I'm happy, and (b) I couldn't
find information anywhere else about 10.04 not working with a Dell
Latitude D800 and my specific geoforce 4200 card (for some reason Dell
up'd the card just after mine :( )

[Bug 250367] Re: Audacity uses 100% CPU on opening any file dialog

2009-12-16 Thread Phil Ayres
I have the same issue as Andres with Audacity ® 1.3.9 (Unicode) on
Karmic, making Xorg use 80% CPU or more.

Often when I try and edit any section of audio (though typically one
that touches the end of the audio file), the CPU jumps to 100%, and
Audacity becomes largely unusable - most menu items and controls are
disabled. The file I am working on can not be saved and although it may
offer to save on exit (even though it doesn't exit), the file becomes
corrupted meaning that when you open it again in a fresh instance of
Audacity it is either lacking sections of audio or it forces the CPU
back to 100%.

Before anyone asks, I have experienced the same when I used it before
Pulse was installed, and now with a working Pulse configuration. Same
with Compiz (previously used Metacity). I think the file handling of the
Audacity is just dead on Linux.

I feel that I have stuck with this software too long and need to find
something new (or maybe go back to Windows, where it used to work
beautifully).

[Bug 250367] Re: Audacity uses 100% CPU on opening any file dialog

2009-12-16 Thread Phil Ayres
A quick update to this, as I continue to struggle through the project I
have in Audacity. I find that if I am editing and the CPU rockets, I can
normally recover by undoing the last change I made (Ctrl-Z), then the
CPU returns to normal. I think there is an issue when I delete large
sections of audio, although sometimes just crossing some little boundary
seems to be a problem.

When I have a damaged project, I've been able to reassemble all the
parts by pasting them in the order listed in the project file, manually
one by one into one complete file. The audio data itself does not seem
to be damaged. The project file does not look strange either, but on
opening it will force the CPU to 100%.

If you have the same problem as me, try the Ctrl-Z trick to see if you
can recover from an editing problem that forces up the CPU and damages
the project.

[Bug 246099] Re: Screen corruption while scrolling gnome-system-monitor process list

2009-05-05 Thread Phil Ayres
This is a bug for me. My configuration is a Dell Latitude D800 using
NVIDIA proprietary driver version 96. I tend to get horrible scrolling
performance in any Firefox that is graphically rich (or maybe that's
Adobe Flash doing that) , but nothing that corrupts like this.

System Monitor: 2.26.0.1 running on Jaunty 9.04. Previously 8.10 was
equally bad.
