[Bug 1735594] Re: [regression] compiz crashes after Mesa upgrade

2018-01-11 Thread Phil Norisez
I got it to work, and it fixes my problem with the launcher resulting in
an unknown file error on /usr/bin/compiz.

Go to Software & Updates via command line
ubuntu-software &
and selecting it from a list of apt applications.

Use Developer Options to enable xenial-proposed.

Then run command line:
sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-dri/xenial-proposed

This installed it for me.

How about withdrawing the update that causes this until fixed? Or,
publishing some kind of advisory that doesn't require searching many

I seem to be having a similar problem mounting a DROID RAZR MAXX HD on

[Bug 1467498] Re: evolution imap with comcast gets ping error

I see that this bug is listed as "affects 1 person." I'd like to point
out the history of the problem goes clear back to 2005 and request that
it be given more attention. The following results can be had by
searching Questions for "evolution ping". So, there are at least 8

notations at various times.

This problem makes evolution undesirable, since email fetching is
suspended while it determines that the ping is not working. From the
variety of different mailservers on which this has been reported, I
conclude that this is a bug in Ubuntu's version of evolution. Please
address this!

[Bug 1467498] [NEW] evolution imap with comcast gets ping error

2015-06-22 Thread Phil Norisez
Public bug reported:

Comcast/Xfinity is pushing us to go to IMAP instead of POP, so trying to
do this. Setting up an evolution IMAP account to imap.comcast.net is
all that is needed to reproduce this. Keep getting a message from
evolution about imap.comcast.net disconnecting on a ping. Want to know
if this indicates a real problem or is just an artifact of
incompatibility between ubuntu evolution and comcast/xfinity, and CAN BE
IGNORED.

Error reads as follows: Error while Pinging IMAP server
imap.comcast.net.Server unexpectedly disconnected. Connection timed
out.

Evolution info: 3.2.3

Ubuntu info: 12.04 (precise) kernel info: 3.13.0-55-generic

I am reporting this as a bug because Ubuntu Software Center says:
Canonical provides critical updates for Evolution Mail and Calendar
until April 2017.

[Bug 1458967] [NEW] gpg not asking for passphrase to decrypt a file

2015-05-26 Thread Phil Norisez
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Signed Ubuntu Code of Conduct without issuet,
Decided to play with gpg to learn more about it, using the UCofC text for
testing,
Saved the UCofC into UCC2,txt.
Encrypted the file into UCC2.gpg with command: gpg -r $USER -o UCC2.gpg --yes
--symmetric -e UCC2.txt
This worked fine, asking me for the passphrase twice, as expected.
I gave it the one that I used to sign the UCofC for Launchpad.
Then, to test the decryption: gpg -d UCC2.gpg UCC2_1.txt
Got the following messages:

'You need a passphrase to unlock the secret key for
'user: Phillip Norisez (This is my key for Launchpad) noris...@comcast.net
'2560-bit ELG-E key, ID F91FDEB0, created 2015-04-27 (main key ID 05B43F32)
'
'gpg: encrypted with 1 passphrase
'gpg: encrypted with 2560-bit ELG-E key, ID F91FDEB0, created 2015-04-27
' Phillip Norisez (This is my key for Launchpad) noris...@comcast.net'

All of which seems to indicate the decrypt did not work.
HOWEVER, diff UCC2_1.txt UCC2.txt DID NOT ERROR OUT AS EXPECTED.
It seems that the text actually was written out to the file, even though errors
appeared.
Now, this leads me to ask the following:

Why did the decrypt seem to work OK in spite of the errors?

Why didn't gpg ask me for the passphrase? (I checked some old (ca 2009)
posts that came up in a search for gpg not asking and found one that
discussed checking the passphrase caching preferences for seahose, but I
could not find them. I attributed this to the age of the posts; the
preferences may have been deleted or moved.

So, how do I change the caching preferences? Or can I not do that?

Bottom line is that I expected gpg to ask me for the passphrase every
time I try to decrypt the file. Is this a valid expectation?

[Bug 909723] Re: Issues with Volume Control on Lenovo R61i

2012-02-06 Thread Phil Norisez
11.10 install after applying Comment #4 Fix for bug 876020 on a Lenovo
R61i (aka 89329xu). I cannot confirm the observation about the output
volume in sound settings; I only have 100% marked about 2/3 of the way
to the right. Here are some observations of my own:

1. Volume settings do not persist across boots.
2. In Gnome ALSA Mixer, I have two output controls, one for Headphon and one
for Speaker. At boot, they both default to maximum. There is a PCM
control which seems to affect Speaker. It also has three Mic controls,
Mic, Mic1, and Mic2. Mic correlates to Input in sound settings.
Mic1 and Mic2 appear to do nothing. Neither Input not Mic have any
effect on the volume of an external microphone; it 's always at maximum. They
appear to only control the internal mic, and only to the extent of 2 or three
notches on the Input indicator.
3. The command line alsamixer shows the same as Gnome ALSA mixer, but in Curses
graphics. Mic also has the additional label CAPTURE. These controls
appear to function exactly like the Gnome ALSA Mixer. Indeed, corresponding
controls track together betwee n the two programs.
4. Both Gnome ALSA Mixer and alsamixer identify my sound chip as Conexant ID
5045. Previous to the bug 876020 fix, they correctly identified it as a
20549. I am going to back the fix out to see if it reverts, and report on that
here.

All for now. Hope this information is helpful.

2012-02-06 Thread Phil Norisez
Hmm. After backing the change for bug 876020#4 out, the changes to the
various controls persisted. In addition, control over the external mic
volume seems to be enabled. Putting the change back in seems to make no
difference.

[Bug 909723] Re: Issues with Volume Control on Lenovo R61i

2012-02-06 Thread Phil Norisez
The bug 876020#8 fix seems to only have had the effect of making all
volume settings except headphon stick across boots. The headphon
volume seems to be maxing out at boot.

[Bug 596727] Re: sysinfo crashes when I click on system: System.NullReferenceException

2011-11-17 Thread Phil Norisez
Running 10.10. I know I'm late to the party, but I just loaded hardinfo
via sudo apt-get install hardinfo as suggested by the shell when I tried
to run it. This works, and seems superior to sysinfo, anyway.
