your top right click worked! thanks, issue now resolved!

On 4/17/07, VF [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Scale has no keyboard shortcuts by default, though it should come up
when you click in the very top right.

If you're still having this problem, can you hit alt-f2, run 'gconf-
 editor', navigate to /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options, then
double click on 'active_plugins' and check the list? 'scale' should be
listed in there, if not adding it should help.

If scale's loaded in active_plugins, can you navigate to
 /apps/compiz/plugins/scale/allscreens/options, and check initiate_edge
and initiate_edgebutton? initiate_edge should be TopRight and
initiate_edgebutton should be '1' (setting it to 0 activates scale in
 the top right without clicking).

[Bug 93209] Re: Fails to detect Nvidia 3D driver

2007-03-28 Thread R Morrison
hmm now my nvidia driver no longer works
... a few days ago i updated and rebooted ubuntu (believe it was a kernel
upgd.) and my nvidia drivers disappeard in restricted-manager. Ive tried
running it -c -u and my install is up to date (in fact i think i remeber
seeing ?.15 as the version of r-m i have). I checked apt-gert and the proper
restricted-modules and nvidia-glx packages are installed. but whenever i try to
start xorg.conf using the nvidia driver i get no screens found. in r-m nvidia
doesnt show up even after asking it to -u... but lspci shows the hardware is
clearly visible on the bus and the nvidia module available in proper version.
what should i do... i was hoping restricted-manager meant it'd be eaier to deal
with kernel upgrades (not having to run the nvidia driver installer to
recompile the modules after each kern upgd) but it seems r-m has actually made
it impossible for me to use the nvidia after a kernel upgrade, but alas it
seems its a bane of being undder development eh :-)
Thanks,
R Morrison

2007-03-01 Thread R Morrison
applied all updates this morn (3/1), compiiz still does not work properly... it
will start via compiz --replace but utimately must be closed and metacity
restarted to gain usability with compiz the windows are often misdrawn w/
weird distortions of the wobble effect, and lots of horizontal visual artifacts
in the bottom right hand portion of the screen whenever something else on
screen is redrawn. im running on nvidia (9631 driver) on feisty amd64, using
compiz vis desktop-effects package, and the native AIGLX in xorg.

yes. and the x.org 7.2 transition appears to be finished, so with compiz now

compiz and compiz-* packages recieved updates on this morns update-manager run
but issuing a compiz --replace still yields a largely unusable windowmanger w/
many things (like the taskbar/panel being unresponsive) and ctrl-c and then
metacity must be invoked to restore usability... (atleast the gnome terminal
works through all this wm madness). but still no terminal error messages lol

well i had similar errors on console when manually issuing a compiz or
compiz.real --replace as Johan says he has. I actually got compiz up using the
desktop-effects control panel but i got partial effects (windows wobbled) but
the cpu usage was very high, and there were lots of visual artifacts (banding,
almost like what an refresh rate overdrive used to look like) but these lasted
for fractions of a second intermittently showing what ought be painted from the
buffer. After reading your e-mail i tried again to issue compiz via the
terminal but it basically made my desktop unresponsive (could'nt change window
focus, missing decorators, high cpu utilization, other random weirdness. and i
couldnt coax any terminal error output :-(

running nvidia v9631 w/ whatever is built into the xserver (AIGLX i think)

btw to anyone else trying to get some terminal output issuing compiz, ctrl-c
and type metacity to bring back your desktop w/o having to kill the whole

2007-02-19 Thread R Morrison
According to Thom the recommendation:In fact, this is no bug in
bcm43xx-fwcutter and support has not been dropped for older cards. The new
bcm43xx driver, which went to Feisty, requires a 4.x firmware version. In order
to get one, download the latest bcm43xx-fwcutter from
http://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=4547 and look at the
README. At the bottom, there is a link to a 4.x firmware. Get it and compile
the bcm43xx-fwcutter version that you just got (the one in Ubuntu is too old)
running make. Then extract the firmware via ./bcm43xx-fwcutter FWFILE and copy
the .fw files to /lib/firmware. Reload the bcm43xx module (sudo rmmod bcm43xx
sudo modprobe bcm43xx) and everything should work fine then. I'll try to get
an exception in order to make the recent fwcutter version available in Feisty.
Doesn't seem to fix the issue, back to the drawing board?

this seems to be a much broader problem than bcm43xx-fwcutter... it
looks like its a problem with this new non-softmac driver in kernel.
it'd be a pity to see Fiesty go to final with tricky or no broadcom wifi
support for a vast number of users, especially mobile users.

[Bug 85099] Re: Broadcom bcm43xx broken with 2.6.20.8 kernel

2007-02-16 Thread R Morrison
Thom is right dropping support of older cards in order to support new ones is
stupid for a couple of reasons:
1. The people most impacted will of course be current users with cards that
have older firmware... suddenly Ubuntu will no longer natively support their
bcm43xx chipset w/ old firmware leaving those of us who have been using said
driver succesfully high and dry.
2. The people who might benefit (people with newer cards) won't realize the
benefits as much as we the older-card owners will feel the pain.
Please fix this issue, it's bad policy to remove support for hardware that is
by no means antiquated, and that as this bug shows many loyal Ubuntu users and
testers have said older hardware. If you ccant support both new and old
firmware, dont break support with the old its not nice :-)

2007-02-16 Thread R Morrison
oh by the way.. i was incorrect.. ndiswrapper with generic amd64 inf's is not
an alternative at least for me if you want working encrrption and a reliable
connection... i'd really like to see either a revert i n the next kernel to the
old-firmware-supporting driver, or create symmetric options ie. one module for
bcm43xx-legacy and then the new bcm43xx. Wiping out support especially when
users are relying on it is not the way to win and keep users. Hopefully someone
on the team will give us an update soon.

[Bug 85658] Broadcom bcm43xx broken with 2.6.20.8 kernel

2007-02-16 Thread R Morrison
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kernel-image-2.6.20-8-generic-di

running amd64... this is a duplicate posting of bug #85099. Basically
this latest kernel it seems includes the ?DeviceScape? bcm43xx driver
rather than softmac. This breaks support with a host of older cards,
many of which also no longer work with ndiswrapper. Either two separate
modules bcm43xx-legacy (softmac, for older firmwares) and bcm43xx (the
new ?devicescape? driver supporting newer firmwares), or a driver in
which both old and new firmwares are supported. This is a major
networking issue as Broadcom chipsets are used in countless notebook
computers, new and old and older notebooks which have always worked with
bcm43xx (since merged into the kernel, which consequently for myself was
actually when ndiswrapper ceased to function (yes i blacklisted bcm43xx
first)).

[Bug 85099] Re: Broadcom bcm43xx broken with 2.6.20.8 kernel

2007-02-14 Thread R Morrison
yup this happens to me as well, i did actually attempt to cut some
firmware out that was 4.x but bcm43xx-fwcutter rejected the .sys files
i tried. Why does the kernel update demand that seeing as there are no
easily available 4.x series firmware files out there to play with.
since we cant get the new firmware to extract and the old firmware
doesnt work until this is fixed i wager to say most bcm43xx driver users
will be SOL unless like me thay have a wired connection.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 81413 ***

i tried update-initramfs -u as someone reccomended in the 81413 comments,
it seems to have brought back my usplash shutdown sequence, but not
bootup... i will keep an eye peeled for this new usplash upload.
thanks,

I'm pretty sure this is bug 81413. If it doesn't come back after the
next usplash upload, let me know.

This happened due to the kernel getting more strict about out-of-range

fix for bug 67545 you probably won't notice this fix.

 usplash (0.4-36) feisty; urgency=low

   * Fix path in example theme Makefile (LP: #73005).
   * Depend on debconf.
   * Update usplash_write(8) to document TEXT-URGENT and PULSATE.
   * Switch to libx86, fixing svgalib on amd64 (LP: #67545).
   * Don't fall over if the bogl backend can't set the resolution, which
won't be possible on several framebuffer implementations (LP: #81413).
