[Bug 1964469] [NEW] Changes file extension when shared to phone

2022-03-10 Thread Reuben Thomas
Public bug reported:

When I share a file whose extension is '.asc' it ends up on the phone as
'.txt'. This is confusing: I exported my encryption keys from DeltaChat
desktop, shared them to my phone, and was then unable to import them
into DeltaChat on the phone (which was expecting '.asc').

[Bug 1412687] Re: Caffeine 2.8.3 doesn't work automatically for hibernate/suspend mode.

2021-10-09 Thread Reuben Thomas
Hi paulw2u: I think the bug should be marked either invalid or upstream.
I'm not sure it was ever demonstrated in xdg-screensaver, but if there
is a bug, it's almost certainly in xdg-utils. Certainly no fix was ever
made in Caffeine.

[Bug 1901100] [NEW] Pidgin needs to be built with gnutls to work with Hangouts

2020-10-22 Thread Reuben Thomas
Public bug reported:

See https://github.com/EionRobb/purple-hangouts/issues/222

I can confirm that building Pidgin 2.14.1 from source with gnutls fixed
this problem (and caused no new ones).

(purple-hangouts is not packaged in Debian/Ubuntu, but this is the case
for Pidgin plugins for several widely-used protocols, such as Facebook
Messenger and Skype IM. The plugins are easy to install from source or
PPAs; it's a pity to make it harder for Ubuntu users by requiring them
also to install Pidgin from source.)

$ dpkg -L kdeconnect|grep autostart

2020-09-12 Thread Reuben Thomas
The patch for this bug: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xdg/xdg-
utils/-/issues/98 does fix the problem, though I am not sure that the
problem here is that the window has no title, rather that no title is
reported by X11::Protocol. However, for our purposes that's good enough!

I shall ensure that this is raised on the xdg-utils Debian package. In
the mean time, a workaround for users is to apply the patch from the
above issue to xdg-screensaver, and place the patched version on their
PATH (e.g. in ~/bin).

2020-09-12 Thread Reuben Thomas
Reopening, as I have finally managed to reproduce this bug. It occurs
for me when the title of a full screen window (the window for which
Caffeine inhibits idleness) contains a non-ASCII character. This causes
an error in the embedded Perl script in xdg-screensaver, in the
subroutine screensaver_gnome_screensaver, where it tries to get the
window name (the call to GetProperty). This in turn appears to be a bug
in the Perl module X11::Protocol.

[Bug 1894741] [NEW] texdoc does not work

2020-09-07 Thread Reuben Thomas
Public bug reported:

$ texdoc
/usr/bin/texdoc:42: Internal error: Texdoc is not installed properly.

The line that fails is:

  local texdoc = require 'texdoclib'

so there seems to be something wrong with texlua's path searching.

A workaround is to cd to /usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/scripts/texdoc
and then run the texdoc command, as the required file is then found in
the current directory.

[Bug 1894431] Re: debuild runs lintian twice

2020-09-06 Thread Reuben Thomas
On further investigation, what actually seems to happen is that lintian
is run twice: once by dpkg-buildpackage, and once by debuild. Thus, the
full incantation required is:

  debuild -us -uc --check-option="--profile=debian" --lintian-opts
--profile debian

The reason I didn't notice is that omitting the second set (so that
lintian run by debuild gives an error) does not cause debuild to exit
with an error.

In any case, I guess lintian should not be run twice.

[Bug 1894431] [NEW] "debuild --lintian-opts ..." doesn't work: options are not passed to lintian

2020-09-06 Thread Reuben Thomas
Public bug reported:

When building a Debian package on Ubuntu, it's necessary to use "--
profile debian" with lintian.

When using debuild, it should be possible to pass options to lintian
with "--lintian-opts". However, these seem to be ignored currently: when
lintian is run, options passed with --lintian-opts are not given to
lintian.

As a workaround, one can use the dpkg-buildpackage option "--check-
option", thus:

  debuild -us -uc --check-option="--profile=debian"

The --profile option is then passed to lintian (note the "="; it would
also be possible to use the more verbose "--check-option=--profile
--check-option=debian").

[Bug 1842986] [NEW] [snap] libreoffice cannot open files in /tmp (e.g. opened by browser)

2019-09-05 Thread Reuben Thomas via ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 310351]

2019-02-18 Thread Reuben Thomas via ubuntu-bugs
Thanks, Rex. I happen to be a GNOME user myself, but more importantly, I
need an xdg-screensaver that works for users there.

If you have any suggestions that you'd be happier with, I'm all ears.
Note that we're talking about GNOME 3/gnome-shell, so gnome-screensaver
can't be assumed.

[Bug 310351]

2019-02-18 Thread Reuben Thomas via ubuntu-bugs
The SimulateActivity interface is not actually specified in the fd.o
spec: http://people.freedesktop.org/~hadess/idle-inhibition-
spec/re01.html

The only methods offered there are Inhibit and UnInhibit.

SimulateActivity is not implemented in GNOME 3, so the patch will not
work there. The route I suggest will work on any system implementing the
fd.o spec.

In general, I think that while one does have to be careful about
dependencies in general. First, it is not unreasonable to assume that
any system running one of the desktop environments that implement this
DBus interface will have Perl installed. Of course, the Perl DBus
implementation is not part of core Perl; I would be happy to make my
patch emit a helpful error if it can't find the module. Secondly, for
most users, xdg-utils will be installed from a system package, which can
depend on the relevant Perl package (which is not large); as well, of
course, as depending on Perl (since Perl is installed by default on many
systems, e.g. Ubuntu and Mac OS X, the latter dependency will often not
be needed).

[Bug 1660605] Re: multiple caffeinated processes: suspends after first completes

2019-01-29 Thread Reuben Thomas via ubuntu-bugs
I'm the maintainer of caffeinate.

This shouldn't happen: caffeinate creates a separate window whose ID is
passed to xdg-screensaver on each invocation.

I had a look at caffeinate, and I can't see any faults in its logic (of
course, I welcome reports to the contrary!). In particular, I tested to
make sure that it uses a different window ID when it is run in parallel
in several instances.

As ever for bugs with caffeine and its friends, the way to find out
where the bug is is to run the relevant xdg-screensaver commands
manually:

$ xdg-screensaver suspend WINDOW_ID_1
$ xdg-screensaver suspend WINDOW_ID_2
$ xdg-screensaver resume WINDOW_ID_1

where WINDOW_ID_1 and WINDOW_ID_2 are the IDs of two different windows,
obtained for example by running the following command twice:

$ xwininfo | grep "Window id" | cut -d " " -f 4

and in each case clicking on a different window. Whichever window it is,
it must remain open for the duration of the experiment.

After running the 3 commands above, if the screensaver is now active
again, that's a bug in xdg-screensaver.

[Bug 1812373] Re: Desktop is not restored correctly after screen saver

2019-01-25 Thread Reuben Thomas via ubuntu-bugs
I had several of these extensions. I started by disabling them all. This
fixed the problem (thanks!). I then re-enabled most of them one at a
time (because they are all things I find extremely useful—I do not like
to install extensions unless I have to!).

In the end, I was able to reinstall all but one of the extensions I
need, namely

'cont...@projecthamster.org'

I had no problem with:

'nohotcor...@azuri.free.fr'
'switc...@landau.fi'
'topIcons@adel.gadl...@gmail.com'
'windowIsReady_Remover@nunofarr...@gmail.com'
'windowoverlay-ic...@sustmidown.centrum.cz'
'window-search-provi...@quelltexter.org'

I am interested in how you made the list, @vanvugt; is there some reason
to suspect the other extensions listed are problematic too?

In any case, my immediate problem seems to be solved (thanks very much),
and I now need to find a fix for using Project Hamster, as I rely on it
to time work.

[Bug 1812373] Re: Desktop is not restored correctly after screen saver

2019-01-18 Thread Reuben Thomas via ubuntu-bugs
I have updated the bug to reflect that it's related to the screen saver
(desktop idleness), not specifically the lock screen.

** Summary changed:

- Lock screen stopped working
+ Desktop is not restored correctly after screen saver

** Description changed:

With the update to 3.28.3-0ubuntu0.18.04.4, on two separate machines,
- the lock screen stopped working properly.
+ the screen saver stopped working properly.

- When I enter lock, either manually (by clicking the lock screen icon) or
- automatically (by waiting for the lock screen timeout), the screen
- either freezes with the desktop still showing, or shoes the same grey
- background as the login screen; it does not show the normal lock screen
- image.
+ When the screen is locked manually (by clicking the lock screen icon),
+ the screen either freezes with the desktop still showing, or shows the
+ same grey background as the login screen; it does not show the normal
+ lock screen image.

- Pressing a key such as space, which would normally raise the screen
- shield and reveal the login dialog, has no effect.
+ When the screen saver is activated automatically, the screen turns off
+ as normal, but when I press a key, the grey background as for the login
+ screen is shown (in fact, it's the same as the login screen, but without
+ the login widget; that is, the normal icons are shown at the top of the
+ screen).
+

Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 switches to the login dialog.

I can then log in successfully, but all GNOME shell extensions are
  disabled.

(A simple workaround is then to restart gnome-shell with the "r" command
from the "Enter a command" dialog.)

I am marking this bug as a security vulnerability because in the case
that the screen simply freezes, confidential information may be
displayed by the failure of the screen shield to activate.

[Bug 1812373] Re: Lock screen stopped working

2019-01-18 Thread Reuben Thomas via ubuntu-bugs
In case it was a kernel problem (I have also had a kernel update since I
last rebooted, from 4.15.0-42 to -43), I installed the latest HWE 18.04
kernel, but that did not help.

I should note that in fact the screen shield *does* sometimes activate;
but when it does, pressing a key reveals only the grey background, not
the login dialog.

Another potential culprit might be gdm3, but of course there has been no
update to that package recently.

[Bug 1462186] Re: Add MATE support

2018-11-06 Thread Reuben Thomas via ubuntu-bugs
@pilotbob42, thanks for the extra material. From looking at the patch
and MATE thread it seems the main difference is that MATE uses a
different DBus path for its screen saver; unfortunately, this is already
taken account of in the current xdg-screensaver, so the actual problem
must be some other detail that is different.

However, it does mean that it should be easy to fix.

[Bug 1462186] Re: Add MATE support

2018-11-05 Thread Reuben Thomas via ubuntu-bugs
@pilotbob42, thanks for the explanation, that makes more sense.

However, xdg-utils has explicit support for MATE, so if it's broken,
it's a bug and should be fixed. (xdg-screensaver has ad hoc support for
a wide range of desktop environments; there is no requirement to support
a particular mechanism).

Comments in xdg-screensaver say:

# DBUS interface for mate-screensaver
# This is same as gnome's for now but may change in the future as MATE
# does not follow gnome's developement necessarily.

If this therefore is no longer the case, then the code needs updating;
simple as that!

2018-08-14 Thread Reuben Thomas via ubuntu-bugs
I can confirm that this bug still exists in Ubuntu 16.04.5:
specifically, I tried printing two pages of a PostScript file from
Evince with Duplex set to "Long Edge (Standard)", and instead of a
single sheet with both pages, the printer printed on two sheets.

I also had the following error on the terminal from which I launched
Evince: "fatal internal error -100" eight times, without a newline
between the repetitions.

It would be good to find a solution to this problem.

Note: this bug is an Ubuntu bug, not a Caffeine bug. Caffeine merely
happens to be hosted on Launchpad; I don't actually package it for

Hence, marking invalid for upstream, and adding an assignment to the

[Bug 374059] Re: mpd is not configured to use pulseaudio

2017-02-14 Thread Reuben Thomas
This bug still needs fixing.

Since mpd is now run by default per-user, if system mpd is disabled, the
fix would require a patch to mpd's source code to have it try PulseAudio
before ALSA. This would have the disadvantage stated in comment #15 that
it could result in PulseAudio being started for a user who doesn't want
it, but I suggest that such users are relatively rare compared to those
who use the default Ubuntu setup, and we can put a note in README.Debian
about how to configure mpd to avoid this.

At the same time, /etc/mpd.conf should be modified to comment out
explicit configuration of ALSA.

If this is acceptable to the maintainers, I'm happy to work out the
(trivial) patch (or perhaps it should go to Debian if Debian uses
PulseAudio by default; Florian, I guess you'll know?).

[Bug 1608880] Re: systemd doesnt work with timed fsck, only with counted mount fsck

2017-01-19 Thread Reuben Thomas
I confirm this problem. Another curious thing is that fsck appears to be
run, but doesn't do anything as the file system is clean:

/run/initramfs/fsck.log says:

Log of fsck -C -a -T -t ext4 /dev/md1
Thu Jan 19 19:09:43 2017

/dev/md1: clean, 46950805/57753600 files, 197262216/231002624 blocks

Thu Jan 19 19:09:44 2017

In other words, it terminates immediately. Yet, the log file for the
boot says:

Jan 19 19:09:59 femur kernel: [8.478804] EXT4-fs (md1): warning:
checktime reached, running e2fsck is recommended

And this is confirmed by the output of dumpe2fs:

Last checked: Fri Dec 25 18:19:07 2015
Check interval: 15552000 (6 months)
Next check after: Wed Jun 22 19:19:07 2016

So I'm a bit puzzled: e2fsck is indeed being run in "preen" mode on this
file system, the next check is due, so why is the check not made?

[Bug 1635589] [NEW] man page contains unfinished sentence

2016-10-21 Thread Reuben Thomas
Public bug reported:

hollywood(1)'s last main paragraph runs:

While hollywood tries not to overwhelm your system by running widgets with
the minimum scheduling
  priority per nice(1)

It has no period, and no main clause. The most obvious fix is simply to
remove "While" and add a period (full stop) at the end of the sentence,
as it makes sense on its own then.

[Bug 1634490] [NEW] Pattern drawn over dialog title bars obscures title

2016-10-18 Thread Reuben Thomas
Public bug reported:

Most dialogs in LibreOffice (but not the main document windows) have a
pattern drawn over the title bar, which obscures the window title. I
can't find any way to change this: changing the symbol style has no
effect, and I can't find anything about this problem by googling.

[Bug 1623512] [NEW] Fix for Play/Pause key on some MCE remotes

2016-09-14 Thread Reuben Thomas
Public bug reported:

The file /usr/share/lirc/remotes/mceusb/lircd.conf.mceusb contains a
section reading:

#seen on HP Pavilion dv3t remote --Tim Mann, 3 Nov 2009
Media 0x7b7f
PlayPause 0x7b91

I have a Compro VideoMate K300 remote, and I can't find a key
corresponding to Media, but it does have a Play/Pause key generating the
same code as above (0x7b91).

However, using it with Kodi, for example, it does nothing useful,
because Kodi does not recognise the "PlayPause" code.

I suggest that for Kodi, XMBC & similar programs it's probably more
useful to change the code output to KEY_PLAY. (I tried KEY_PLAYPAUSE,
which is also mentioned in Kodi's Lircmap.xml, but that did not work in
Kodi: nothing happened when I pressed the key.) With KEY_PLAY, the key
works as expected: it plays or pauses the music.

The change is to change "PlayPause" in the above line to "KEY_PLAY".

Arguably, the correct fix is to change the keycode to "KEY_PLAYPAUSE",
and then make Kodi correctly respond to "KEY_PLAYPAUSE". I attempted to
do this by editing Kodi's Lircmap.xml, but failed.

I looked at upstream lirc, but that has completely changed the
organisation of remote config files since 0.9.0, so it seems most
appropriate to make a fix in Ubuntu (and possibly Debian).

[Bug 1620043] Re: All but one page sent by network scanner are discarded

2016-09-04 Thread Reuben Thomas
Unless there's evidence that the bug has been fixed (e.g. in the
repository commit logs or release notes), it seems unlikely, given that
it persists in the same form since I reported it 5 years ago. Also, it
may have been intentional behavior (see bug #717885 for analysis).

** Description changed:

If I press Scan in simple-scan, then scan multiple pages on my scanner
(in this case, a Lexmark X543dn), then only the first page appears in
simple-scan. I can of course press Scan again to scan the next page, but
with a network scanner this is tedious, as I have to enter a code on the
scanner for every page, rather than just telling it to scan another
page, or feeding a multi-page document into it. This has been
  reproducible since Maverick.

  WORKAROUND: Use XSane.
+
+ See bug #717885 for original report against Maverick, detailed workflow
+ and analysis.

** Description changed:

When I use simple-scan 2.32.0.1 with my Lexmark X543dn MFC, and tick
"All pages from feeder", the scanner correctly scans all pages, and the
Lexmark progress dialog shows the data for each page being received, but
  simple-scan malfunctions in two ways:

  1. Only the first page is actually displayed.

  2. After scanning all the pages, the Lexmark dialog that comes up at the
start of a scan job is displayed again, which is unnecessary.

So, there seems to be some slight communication problem: a case of "so
  near, and yet so far"!

See bug 717885 for scanning with "Single Page".

See bug 815856 for scanning with "All pages from feeder."; see bug

workflow used.

Also note that this works with XSane (again, more details in bug
717885). I am filing a new bug as requested by penalvch in comment #9 on
that bug.

[Bug 1510570] Re: BLE pairing fail

2016-08-02 Thread Reuben Thomas
Thanks for this. I managed to get my Arc Touch SE mouse to work with an
otherwise stock 16.04 system by changing the setting as mentioned in
#25, COMMENTING OUT the rule in #27 (merely changing it didn't seem to
work) and then connecting as in #16.

Very grateful, as the mouse was a Christmas present that I asked for and
I felt bad that I wasn't able to use it!

[Bug 1606959] Re: DPI setting is not correctly calculated on Ubuntu GNOME

2016-07-27 Thread Reuben Thomas
I have traced this to an Ubuntu patch: debian/display-scaling-default-
value

The comment says:

"Set default scaling to be 1:1, instead of using the hardware's
reporting to define scaling by default. This is because hardware lies.
Lots of it does."

Unfortunately the solution, as far as I can tell, only works for Unity.

Also, the use of com/ubuntu/user-interface/scale-factor poses the
question: how does Unity get the right answer, and why is it worth
trusting? Is it user-set?

If it is user-set (which would explain why I couldn't find an automatic
setting anywhere in the Unity code!), then it would be reasonable to
look up non-Unity user settings too, such as GNOME's HiDPI "Window
scaling" setting /org/gnome/desktop/interface/scaling-factor.

In general, the relevant setting should be read depending on the desktop
(sigh, sounds like another need for an xdg-util, e.g. a new setting for
xdg-settings).

An alternative would be to patch GNOME's control center to set the same
property; then at least the code would also work for GNOME. Ubuntu's
setting is clearly superior to GNOME's in that it is per-screen (or to
be precise, per display adaptor), not a single number.

[Bug 1606959] [NEW] DPI setting is not correctly calculated on Ubuntu GNOME

2016-07-27 Thread Reuben Thomas
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 on my Retina MacBook Pro, chromium-browser, unlike
any other app I've found, gets the wrong DPI, and starts up unscaled.

On investigation, this appears to be because of a bug in
desktop_screen_x11.cc (I checked this only in the sources for the
currently shipped version of Chromium, against which I'm reporting this
bug).

The hardware is *correctly* queried via the GTK2 back-end in gtk2_ui.cc,
and device_scale_factor is set to 2 in line 328 of
desktop_screen_x11.cc.

However, this is then unconditionally overridden lower down. In line
356, density_indicator is set to 8 (this corresponds to a scale factor
of 1). The next few lines, guarded by #ifdef USE_GLIB, then try to read
a value from the gsettings key /com/ubuntu/user-interface/scale-factor.

Aside: Under Unity, I understand that this setting is populated with
information about the connected displays (I did try to find where this
happens, but I can only find references to the setting in unity-control-
center, while presumably it must also be set whenever a new display is
plugged or unplugged); under GNOME it seems not to be.

The problem is that when the gsettings key /com/ubuntu/user-interface
/scale-factor is empty, or absent, the default value of
density_indicator is still used, overriding the hardware-provided value.
The only circumstances in which the hardware-provided value will be used
are when the key for the relevant display is explicitly set to 0.

This means that scaling won't work on a GNOME system, which is ironic
considering that the correct information has already been obtained from
Gtk!

As far as I can see, the fix is to change the setting of 8 in line 356
to 0, so that if no gsettings value can be obtained, then the hardware-
supplied value, which has already been calculated, is used.

[Bug 1606959] Re: DPI setting is not correctly calculated on Ubuntu GNOME

2016-07-27 Thread Reuben Thomas
Note to any users affected by this bug: a workaround is to manually
populate the /com/ubuntu/user-interface/scale-factor key. For example,
on my MacBook Pro, I set it using dconf-editor to:

{'eDP1': 16, 'DP1': 8, 'DP2': 8, 'HDMI1': 8, 'HDMI2': 8}

It is a fairly safe assumption that the internal display (eDP1) will
always be the same DPI, and that I will only use non-Retina external
displays. Most users should be in the same situation, unless they're
lucky enough to use secondary Retina displays sometimes, but not lucky
enough to use them always.

[Bug 1026869] Re: Firefox accepts dictionaries and spell check entries from every which spell check backend, leaving problems with defaults and the language selector enables this behavior

2015-08-26 Thread Reuben Thomas
This bug continues to affect Firefox 40 in Ubuntu.

I can confirm the workaround of installing a dictionary *in Firefox* for
the desired default language.
