[Bug 1875991] [NEW] Screen unlocks without password

2020-04-29 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

I think this might be a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/1870803 however,
I can't find out to add my machine information to it.

A little more information I can add - not sure if it's the same for
original reporter - when I first log into my account I get some sort of
notification about gnome-screensaver not being enabled because gnome
isn't installed; or something to that effect. This started upon upgrade
to Focal.

TLDR: If I lock my account using the gnome-menu, then press ctrl+alt+F7,
it immediately goes to my session without needing to type a password,
bypassing all security.

[Bug 1692437] Re: Monitors on second GPU not working after upgrade to zesty

2019-02-03 Thread Richard Eames
After going on the #radeon channel on Freenode, we narrowed the problem
down to the switcheroo-control package. We started by hand making an
xorg.conf file and disabling gpu-manager, but still had issues. Looking
at the dmesg log, we saw that the discrete gpu is enabled at first, then
disabled sometime in the systemd start up. After trying to disable
various things, including switcheroo, from the kernel parameters and
having the problem still occur, we narrowed it down to being a service
that was writing to `/sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch`. I looked
at my enabled services, and saw `switcheroo-control`, after disabling,
everything started working again.

Given that the package was integrated into gnome in late 2016 [0][1], it
lines up timewise with when I started having problems.

[Bug 1692437] Re: Monitors on second GPU not working after upgrade to zesty

2019-02-01 Thread Richard Eames
I filmed my computer boot up to better show what happens. The right
monitor is on the integrated video card (the R7), and doesn't show
anything initially. The center and left monitor turn on and mirror each
other during boot, and show grub and most of the kernel and systemd
messages, then at some point all output is sent to the right monitor. I
believe the systemd log says something along the lines of "detecting all
video cards" at that point.

[Bug 1692437] Re: Monitors on second GPU not working after upgrade to zesty

2017-07-28 Thread Richard Eames
Is there anything I can do to move this along?

I'm fairly certain it's a kernel or driver issue since zesty since I'm
currently running 16.04 on live USB and all three monitors work just
fine. I've tried using the 4.8 kernel from yakkety, but I couldn't get
it to boot, I'm assuming it was compiled specifically for yakkety.

[Bug 1692437] Re: Monitors on second GPU not working after upgrade to zesty

2017-06-03 Thread Richard Eames
Some more information:

- If I switch my primary display adapter in BIOS to the onboard GPU, I can get
all three monitors and two cards working, but the framerate on the monitors
attached to the PEG GPU is so low that it's almost unusable.
- If I set the PEG GPU as primary display adapter, all three monitors work
until it gets to the lightdm greeter where only the monitor attached to the
integrated gpu works.

[Bug 1692437] Re: Monitors on second GPU not working after upgrade to zesty

2017-06-01 Thread Richard Eames
I'm beginning to think this is a driver issue. I have a builtin "Kaveri"
amd gpu, and pci Radeon HD 4850. I usually have the 4850 as my primary
card/monitor setup. However, since upgrading to Ubuntu 17.04, once
lightdm is started, only the monitor on the Kaveri works.

I dropped to VT1, and ran `X -configure` after shutting lightdm down,
and received an error:

amdgpu_device_initialize: DRM version is 2.49.0 but this driver is only
compatible with 3.x.x

[Bug 1692437] [NEW] Monitors on second GPU not working after upgrade to zesty

2017-05-22 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

I'm not 100% sure this is the right package to file the bug against, but
since upgrading to zesty the two monitors on my second GPU are no longer
detected once I reach the greeter screen at login time. However, both of
them display information during boot.

Let me know how I can narrow down the bug report.

[Bug 1400206] Re: Chromium hangs: GPU process hung

2017-04-26 Thread Richard Eames
@Chris: I'm not 100% sure, for my home machine it was either a Radeon HD
4850 or a Radeon R7 200 series.

I think this bug was "fixed" on both machines once I upgraded to Ubuntu
15.10. (Although on my work machine 15.10 caused a different system
freeze bug starting with that release that didn't fix until I changed
the graphics card again.)

[Bug 1685864] Re: System freezes when logging into gnome-shell

2017-04-24 Thread Richard Eames
Might also be related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/zesty/+source/unity8-desktop-
session/+bug/1632772 since removing unity8-desktop-session also allowed
me to log in using gnome shell. However, I still think it shouldn't have
caused a null pointer dereference.

[Bug 1685864] [NEW] System freezes when logging into gnome-shell

2017-04-24 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to ubuntu 17.04 this morning, and can no longer login with
gnome/gnome(classic)/gnome on wayland. When I try, the UI completely freezes,
and keyboard and mouse no longer respond.
However, I am able to ssh into the machine, and see that there is a kernel bug
in the logs:

[Bug 1543782] Re: Complete system freeze some time after lock screen starts

2017-03-06 Thread Richard Eames
I think this is/was either a bug in the radeon driver, or a faulty
graphics card. (however, it was only triggered when on the lightdm gtk
greeter screen). I've replaced my card with another one, and no longer
have this issue.

[Bug 1599956] [NEW] Mysql workbench can drop the wrong table

2016-07-07 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

If one tries to truncate/drop a table via the right click menu in the
schema inspector, the generated sql may use the incorrect table.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a database with two tables. (eg, table_a, table_b)
2. In mysql-workbench, open the connection to the database.
3. Right click on the schema, and click "Schema Inspector".
4. Select the "Tables" tab.
5. Click the "Name" column twice to reverse the sort order.
6. Right click the top table (should be `table_b`), and select "DROP Table"

In the alert box that pops up, it says that it will drop table_a, not the
selected table_b.
This bug also happens with the TRUNCATE command.

[Bug 1543782] Re: Complete system freeze some time after lock screen starts

2016-04-26 Thread Richard Eames
The only note-worthy log entries I see in that folder are in
x-0-greeter.log, and I'm not 100% sure they're related to this bug, I've
attached the log file.

I have just managed to reproduce this again:
1) I sshed into my machine from another machine to verify when my machine
crashes
2) On my machine I hit ctrl+alt+L to start the lock screen
3) Waited a few minutes (not sure how long I actually need to wait)
4) pressed the num lock key
At that point, the LED lights on my keyboard and mouse turned off, and the
monitors displayed the "not connected" message. On the machine that I used to
ssh with, the terminal had frozen.

The reason I assigned this to lightdm is because I've reproduced this
bug on the greeter screen where (I think) it's the only thing running,
and it crashes the greeter leaving just the background image/colour
displaying.

I have a new computer, and installed a new copy of Ubuntu 16.04 on it,
and I still get this issue. It's most likely related something new added
in 15.10 that is still causing issues in 16.04.

As an experiment, I tried logging out of my account and leaving it (over

[Bug 1543782] Re: Complete system freeze some time after some inactivity

2016-02-29 Thread Richard Eames
Another interesting data point: Last week I disabled the screensaver +
monitor turning off, and instead of locking the screen, I just turned my
monitors off, when I got to work this morning, my computer hadn't
frozen. So, this bug appears to be related to the lock screen. I'm not
sure what I'm using for a lock screen, to start it I've used both `dm-
tool lock` and ctrl+alt+L, both cause my computer to freeze.

[Bug 1543782] [NEW] Complete system freeze some time after screensaver starts.

2016-02-09 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

Ever since updating to 15.10 my computer has been freezing every day.
Usually this happens after I've left work, and since I leave my computer
on, I manually start the screensaver (ctrl+alt+L), and when I come back
the next morning, the computer is completely unresponsive, even to
sysrq. Gnome screensaver itself doesn't appear to be the culprit since I
can turn it on, then log back into my system any time within perhaps 5
minutes. Looking at my root journalctrl output, yesterday, it appears to
have crashed 30 minutes after I logged out (I was zeroing a drive with
dd, and was issuing a kill -USR1 to track the progress every 30
seconds).

At first I thought it might be a botched upgrade from 15.04, so I tried
a clean reinstall last week, but it still freezes. There is also nothing
in the logs that would indicate an error/crash.

The only potentially related piece of information is that I use gnome-
shell, installed via ubuntu-gnome-desktop.

I'm not sure what package to file this under since I don't know how to
reproduce, or how to diagnose the issue. Any debugging advice will be
appreciated since this issue is really starting to annoy me.

2015-06-03 Thread Richard Eames
Correction, Wily has version 42, but I see that debian jessie has
version 43. Can we get version 43 across the board?

** Summary changed:

- Upgrade chromium-browser to 42
+ Backport chromium-browser 43

** Description changed:

- Can we get an upgrade to version 42 now that it's the stable version?
+ Now that Ubuntu 15.10 has had chromium upgraded to version 43 (current
+ stable), can we have it backported to Utopic and Vivid?

[Bug 1400206] Re: Chromium hangs: GPU process hung

2015-05-19 Thread Richard Eames
The apport window that pops up after crashes lists this bug as a
duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1402523 which does not
exist.

One thing I do notice that crashes it: if I hover over the tab name, the
tooltip will sometimes stay and become a white rectangle, if I then try
to show another tooltip on the tab name, the browser locks up.

[Bug 1453443] Re: Daily backup does not run daily

2015-05-11 Thread Richard Eames
Yes, that seems to be the case for the buttons; there was a process
running in the background. So the latter part of this report would be
that it's not finishing, not notifying of errors, and doesn't provide a
way to cancel/restart.

[Bug 1453442] [NEW] Destination folder (null) does not exist when dragging over chromium

2015-05-09 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
- Open an archive with the file-roller gui
- Place the window over top of chromium
- Open a nautilus window
- Drag the contents of file-roller (to extract them) over to the nautilus

Expected Results:
- Nothing should happen until I drop the contents onto the nautilus window at
which point the content is extracted

Actual Results:
- An error message pops up: Destination folder (null) does not exist. Do you
want to create it

[Bug 1327603] [NEW] Reloading gnome shell causes gnome-terminal to disappear on secondary monitors

2014-06-07 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1) Open gnome-terminal
2) Place the console on a secondary monitor
3) Press ctrl+f2
4) Type 'r' to reload

Expected results:
I should still be able to see the terminal

Actual results:
The terminal is disappeared, however, if I press the windows/meta key to show
the desktop overview the terminal is still visible, clicking it brings it to
focus, then promptly disappears

[Bug 1206183] [NEW] Deja-dup skips connecting to server unless it's already mounted

2013-07-29 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

I have deja-dup setup to backup to a password protected SMB share, when I set
it up I told it to remember the password. Now, when I start deja-dup and ask it
to do a back up, it opens the enter encrypted password dialogue, I click
next, it then skips a window, and lands back on the enter encrypted password
dialogue, with no errors or notifications that anything was wrong.
If I manually mount the share, it works as expected.

[Bug 915152] Re: gedit crashed with SIGABRT: (g_slist_length (ce-priv-invalid) = 1)

2013-07-28 Thread Richard Eames
I ran into this bug today. It happened when I dragged the attached file
from nautilus to gedit over an sftp connection. The strange thing is if
I created a new file, and cp the contents from recovery.html to the
new file, then dragged it to gedit it didn't crash, I'm guessing due to
file endings. Dragging/opening it from a local filesystem worked.

[Bug 1186816] [NEW] Gnome-shell and X die after changing monitor resolution

2013-06-02 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

I switched around my monitor configuration so that I have 1 monitor on
my primary video card (1920x1080), and 2 monitors (1680x1024) on my
secondary video. The primary monitor's default resolution is higher than
the other two monitors so when it first started the other two wouldn't
display anything.

I changed the resolution of all three to the maximum they could all
support, but they're still all mirrored. Then I changed the screen
layout so that there is no mirroring. After applying the changes, gnome-
shell and X die bringing me back to the login screen.

If I just mirror the monitors, all three will display.

I've tried changing the layout through arandr, and gnome-control-center
with the same result.

Before I changed the monitor configuration I had two 1680x1024 monitors
on the primary video card, and one other 1680x1024 on my secondary video
card. This configuration worked.

[Bug 1186816] Re: Gnome-shell and X die after changing monitor resolution

2013-06-02 Thread Richard Eames
If I take one of the monitors from the second video card and plug it
into the primary, then everything works.

** Description changed:

I switched around my monitor configuration so that I have 1 monitor on
- my primary video card (1920x1080), and 2 monitors (1680x1024) on my
+ my primary video card (1920x1080), and 2 monitors (1920x1080) on my
secondary video.

- Before I changed the monitor configuration I had two 1680x1024 monitors
+ Before I changed the monitor configuration I had two 1920x1080 monitors
on the primary video card, and one other 1680x1024 on my secondary video
  card. This configuration worked.
