[Bug 578979] Re: blank screen after fast-user switch

2014-01-01 Thread Richard Genoud
I tested the daily with qemu, I didn't reproduce it.
I didn't have time to install a daily on my desktop, but as it is a vintage 3
years old but, I think it can be closed.

Re: [Bug 546578] Re: black screen after a few user switches

2010-11-11 Thread Richard Genoud
2010/11/12 PAB 546...@bugs.launchpad.net:
I am a victim of this bug since version 10.04.  I've been using Ubuntu
since 2006 and it's the first time that a bug last this long and is so
 annoying.

I have a full updated 10.10-64 bit Ubuntu version and the bug is still
affecting me.  I can almost tell when the crash will arrive.

have you tried to uninstall gnome-screensaver ?
I had no more problems after that.

[Bug 578979] [NEW] blank screen after fast-user switch

2010-05-11 Thread Richard Genoud
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

This may be a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112518
But it's happening with ubuntu 10.04.
Here's the description.

Log with user A via gdm.
Set the screensaver to 1min (blank screen or whatever).
fast-switch to user B.
wait more than 1 min.
Fast-switch to user A.

= the screen is blank, no message from gnome-screensaver to unlock. There's
only the mouse pointer.
I can still switch to console with ALT-Fx, but the screen is blank (I have to
type blinded).
If I restart gdm, the screen is back.

When this happened, I could see via ssh that the gnome-screensaver
process of user A launched gnome-screensaver-dialog process with
argument --enable-switch and --status-message=

I uninstalled gnome-screensaver, made sure its processes were not running and
try this:
Log with user A via gdm.
Set the power-manager to switch off the screen after 1 min.
fast-switch to user B.
wait more than 1 min.
Fast-switch to user A.
And the screen was OK.

my video card is ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350]
and I'm using KMS (default lucid configuration).
I'm not using compiz or anything related to visual effects.

package: gnome-screensaver 2.30.0-0ubuntu1

[Bug 181561] Re: Hardy alpha [2-6] daily-live i386 don't boot

2008-03-13 Thread Richard Genoud
I did the bisect yesterday and I find out that the bug seems to be in this
commit:
b140b99c413ce410197cfcd4014e757cd745226a
(
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=b140b99c413ce410197cfcd4014e757cd745226a;hp=88b2b32babd46cd54d2de4d17eb869aea3383e11
 )

I sent a mail on the linux-ide mailing list, so let's hope the kernel
2.6.24.4 will be ok.

@Saïvann Carignan

The bug 181561 is also a duplicate and is not set as one. (

They found interestings workarouds like addind all_generic_ide to the kernel
command line.
A bug was open on the kernel bug tracker
(http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9837) but still no news.

Got the same on plextor PX-740A, like patrice.
As sp said that the bug has happened somewhere between 2.6.23 and 2.6.24-rc1, I
will try to do a bisect this evening.
Maybe I will be able to point this out.

2008-03-11 Thread Richard Genoud
I've got some more informations (cf
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/179336/comments/25
):

Ubuntu server and ubuntu alternate are booting ok. (wich is a good thing!)
but I still got the problem on ubuntu desktop (x86) alpha6.

I would have tried with another cd player, but I've got only one...

Richard.

[Bug 179336] Re: Hardy alpha 2 - 5 won't boot

2008-03-06 Thread Richard Genoud
I've had the same problem with hardy alpha 5.
after some time, it falls under the busybox prompt.
(I had no problem with ubuntu 6.04)

There may be an interesting detail : I've got also a plextor DVDR PX-740A. (hda)
(motherboard asus a7n8x-e deluxe)

I managed to save some logs (dmesg, casper.log and /proc/ide/hda/*).
It may be useful.

Each time I did a cat /proc/ide/hda/capacity, I got some hda: drive not ready
for command and a capacity of 25888529.
(it is strange that the copy of this file gave me 75043832).

Another strange thing:
the 1st time I did cat /proc/ide/hda/identify, there was only zeros, (and the
hda not ready for command).
the other times I got something else (but always the hda not ready for command).

And finally, the DVD doesn't respond anymore, even after a reboot. I had
to switch off the computer in order to make it work again.

I hope this can help solving the problem.
