[Bug 1895643] Re: Backport Thunderbird 78 to 20.04 LTS and 18.04 LTS

2021-02-13 Thread Richard Muller
I enabled focal-proposed on my testing machine (amd64), updated
thunderbird to 1:78.7.1+build1-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 and all went exactly as
expected. Thunderbird 78 runs fine so far. No bugs found here. After
that I installed tinyjsd and jsunit (not installed before) and also got
the expected notice about empty packages.

For focal everything seems to be smooth from my side. Have to admit that
I don't use PGP. So feedback from that side would be nice too.

Another 10 days without visible movement. Meanwhile the Thunderbird guys
released version 78.7. but we are still stuck at Thunderbird 68. :-(

[Bug 1895643] Re: Backport Thunderbird 78 to 20.04 LTS and 18.04 LTS

2021-01-14 Thread Richard Muller
@osomon: I already saw the proposed link but anyway thanks for summing
up the situation.

>From my (user) perspective I like and absolutely agree with the ubuntu
principle of not breaking things in favor of chasing higher version
numbers but I only see one way out of this dilemma: 'Dropping' those two
packages as soon as possible because from your links it seems obvious
that they will never be interoperable with newer Thunderbird versions
than 68. Has there been any progress in the 50 days since your update
got blocked?

Looks to me more like a communication problem than a technical problem.
Does the SRU team even know that we are desperately waiting for any
action from their side?

Is there anything else you (or we?) could do to get this ball rolling?

Thanks for your time, Olivier!

[Bug 1895643] Re: Backport Thunderbird 78 to 20.04 LTS and 18.04 LTS

2021-01-13 Thread Richard Muller
@osomon: I'd also kindly ask for more information on what's blocking
this update. Thunderbird version 68 - which is the standard mail
solution shipping with Ubuntu 20.04 right now - is over 6.5 months old.
The upstream version got numerous security fixes over the last half
year. Doesn't feel good to have to rely on software for communications
that stopped getting updates for such a long time. I really don't want
to be pushy, because I know Ubuntu is free software, but I'd like to
express my worries that this for many users important question (current
versions of browser and mail) doesn't have the focus it should have.

[Bug 1827967] Re: There are 4 HDMI/Displayport audio output listed in sound setting without attach any HDMI/DP monitor

2020-02-06 Thread Richard Muller
correction: I don't have any testing kernels installed NOW. In December
2019 I tried your kernels and failed to uninstall them correctly. In the
end I had to go back to a system backup. If you tell me how to
unload/reload the HD-audio driver and what to do afterwards I'd be
willing to help. But anyway I think this discussion should better take
place there:

[Bug 1827967] Re: There are 4 HDMI/Displayport audio output listed in sound setting without attach any HDMI/DP monitor

2020-02-05 Thread Richard Muller
Ok, I'm just a user and don't have access to that mailing list but what
I CAN say, is, that my affected system doesn't run radeon or nouveau
driver but amdgpu.

Takashi Iwai wrote in November 2019 'amdgpu driver already got the
audio-component binding recently, so this problem shouldn't be triggered'

I've no Idea what he exactly means with that because amdgpu driver with
recent ubuntu kernels from mid of January 2020 is definitely affected by
this issue.

In the other bugreport two users already tested your kernels and
provided some dmesg logs. So I think they would be happy to help you
with further investigations. I for my self didn't install any testing
kernels and also have no clue how to 'unload / reload the HD-audio
driver' as Takashi Iwai mentioned here: https://mailman.alsa-
project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2019-November/158707.html

So I think you should better place your call for help over there:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1834771

Thank you very much for your attention and sorry I couldn't be more
helpful ...

[Bug 1827967] Re: There are 4 HDMI/Displayport audio output listed in sound setting without attach any HDMI/DP monitor

2020-02-03 Thread Richard Muller
Hi Hui Wang,

just wanted to remind you that this patch (meant for better usability)
broke audio completely for many users out there. I'd really like to see
any progress in the corresponding bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1834771

Meanwhile I came across many threads in my local language ubuntu
community forum that deal with exact this problem. Having no sound at
all is a mayor deal breaker for many new ubuntu users that switched from
Windows 7. So please, if a real fix needs more time, revert this patch
in the first place! Having some superfluous outputs for selection is
better than having no audio at all.

Thank you very much for your time!

[Bug 1834771] Re: No HDMI-audio after kernel 4.15.-0.50

2019-12-28 Thread Richard Muller
This script also works for me. Like Michael I added a larger sleep
duration and execute it as startup app. Will put this script on every of
our office PCs. Thanks Martin for sharing this workaround. As already
mentioned I'd very much appreciate a real fix coming in the near future.

Wish you all a nice year 2020!

[Bug 1834771] Re: No HDMI-audio after kernel 4.15.-0.50

2019-12-07 Thread Richard Muller
I've also installed the testing kernels but without success. No audio at all :(
@hui.wang: I saw some dmesg outputs being uploaded. Do you need more samples to
fix this bug?

Can you please give us a status update on this? I'm dealing with this
situation for months now and half of the PCs in our office are affected.
Using such an old unpatched kernel for work is not an option. So me and
my colleagues have to use headphones or external speakers along our
speaker equipped monitors.

If quick help is not in sight, I vote for simply undoing the patch that
triggered this terrible bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1827967

Please make our audio work again, @hui.wang!

[Bug 1834771] Re: No HDMI-audio after kernel 4.15.-0.50

2019-11-09 Thread Richard Muller
Absolutely the same behavior here. Last working kernel is 5.0.0-15.
(5.3 is not working here as well)

I've been messing around with this annoying bug for months (using
headphones because my display sound is gone) until someone pointed me to
this bug report today. It is ridiculous to completely take the hdmi
sound from all AMD users just because too much choice could confuse some
people. For now I'll stay with 5.0.0-15 but please fix this issue soon!

By the way, I agree with my predecessor. I also don't want to use the
proprietary driver. The free driver (with at that time flawlessly
working hdmi sound) was the reason for buying AMD graphics.
