[Bug 1224732] Re: Custom keyboard shortcuts don't work

2014-02-22 Thread Rob Koll
After starting System settings - Keyboard, selecting tab Shortcuts,
selecting Custom Shortcuts on t he left hand pane, adding a new one, eg.
thunar, it shows the new short cut and signals not yet having a
keybinding showing the word Disabled. When I attempt to select the line
to enable entering a new binding, it will open the window that allows me
to change the name or command. After closing the window (pressing
cancel), it remains selected. Pressing some key combination (e.g. Super
+ e), the combination is not accepted. When I just press e, a kind of
text box opens down right. But what ever I put there, it is not accepted
as key binding.

[Bug 1186786] Re: nvidia-173 kernel module fails to build on kernels = 3.10.x [error: implicit declaration of function ‘create_proc_entry’]

2013-11-06 Thread Rob Koll
After updgrade to ubuntu 13.10 the issue seems no longer to be present.
Now nvidia-173 builds OK. So suggest to close this bug. Note that
although nvidia-173 builds, it is not running correct. That is another
story / should be other bug.

[Bug 1068601] Re: 10de:0322 12.10: Black screen with GeForce FX 5200 card

2013-06-18 Thread Rob Koll
Christopher, Graham,

In my opinion it does not make sense to assign this bug to me. I opened
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1185911 for the
problem (which is still being processed). There is a 'small catch'. Up
to now, I fail to test if kernel v3.10.0 still holds the problem. It
appears that a change in the proc file system interface causes the
nvidia driver not to build nor install. This is laid down in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-173/+bug/1186786. I just wonder how that will solve...

All taken together, as this bug is no more actual for Graham, I guess
this one gets closed.

[Bug 1186786] Re: nvidia-173 kernel module fails to build on kernels = 3.10.x [error: implicit declaration of function ‘create_proc_entry’]

2013-06-03 Thread Rob Koll
Just some questions.

Do we need to wait for nvidia? Is it possible to tell how long they may
take?

Got today time to look into the failed build log. To me (programming
experience, but not in linux kernel) it looks like proc_fs.h changed,
create_proc_entry removed. Guess being replaced by something else (can
only guess which one, some with suitable parameters). Is it possible to
change nv.c to make it compile and link?

I don't know if you are able to test the outcome of something like that,
but my machine seems quite suitable for that ...

[Bug 1185911] Re: Black screen using recent version Ubuntu with nvidia.

2013-06-02 Thread Rob Koll
I attempted to test v3.10.0 kernel. But after the install, the machine
did not boot into the nvidia driver. I un installed the nvidia driver.
Then the machine seems to boot and use a low resolution driver. I tried
to install the nvidia driver. That failed. The build of the kernel (I
guess a new link) failed, indicating that an error is in the make.log
file. In that process, the machine issued a new bug, 1185786. Up to my
knowledge, issues with the daily build kernels and nvidia are known, so
I guess the new bug is no new news. I hope you manage to handle the bugs
together. I will attempt to upload the log file, but I guess that is
done better at bug 118676.

Do you see a solution to get the V3.10.0 kernel running with the
nvidia-173?

Are you interested in video captures of the machine during boot and
shortly after to see how the bug manifests? I made such videos based on
the old status (kernel 3.9.0). I am not sure whether or not I can upload
the videos, files in the order of one G, .mov format taken with Canon
D60.

At this point I do not place any tags, hoping that there are still
tricks to do the check somehow.

[Bug 1185911] [NEW] Black screen using recent version Ubuntu with nvidia.

2013-05-30 Thread Rob Koll
Public bug reported:

As far as I can judge, i am experiencing the same issues as reported int
bug 1068501. Up to Ubuntu 12.04 my machine was running OK, using the
nvidia proprietary driver. Took some fiddling with X configuration file
to get it on 1920*1200 corresponding to the screen I am using. Starting
from 12.10 the desktop doesn't show. All I see is a one large area of
one color. The color may change at some points in time, not clear when
and why. Interval between changing is like half a minute or longer. In
the one color screen only the mouse pointer is visible. When the pointer
is moved over the screen I can guess where underlying windows are by the
changes in the mouse pointer. Note that after the upgrade still startup
programs where active, proven by the music player starting and evolution
sounding new messages. As nvidia is used, opening a terminal by ctrl-
alt-F1 doesn work (screen indicates that the video signal stops). But an
invisible terminal can be opened by ctrl-alt-t. The terminal is not
visible, but commands typed are executed. When the X session is stopped
by sudo killall Xorg the login screen will become visible and works
correct. In the transition even the background and closing windows may
be shortly viewed. It looks like that the X session just has one large
window on top of everything. Maybe it is a kind of background shown on
top and not as background. Note that due to nvidia not working and even
nouveau showing problems, those are disabled now. Now I have visible and
working system, at low resolution (1024*768) and slow. Probably this is
what you will see in the information gathered by ubuntu-bug. I am using
3 disks and multiple partitions, so I can use the system and experiment
in another boot. So be aware of the fact that the issue is on another
partition. Please instruct how to obtain relevant information from that.
Note also that ubuntu-bug reported:

robbie@RobbiesP4Ubuntu:~$ [6254:6281:0530/185859:ERROR:object_proxy.cc(624)]
Failed to get name owner. Got org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner: Could

provided by any .service files

As suggested in 1068601 I tried the daily build 13.10. That runs OK from live
CD. Installs OK on hard disk (other partition, multi boot). After the install,
I left the system. Upon returning, after wake up of screen saver, the desktop
seemed ok. But any windows that open contain no readable data, just some kind
of noise more or less regular pattern. So not really useful. As suggested in
1068601, I tried to gather info with apport-collect. Just put some scripts on
the disk and started the scripts (with a short name) by typing the command in
an invisible window. The first time I got a message indicating to install
python-apport. So I did, after login into advanced options. Then it prompted to
install python-launchpadlib. So again reboot, install, reboot. Now a strange
thing happened. The desktop became visible, and contained one windows, with an
internet explorer, probably firefox, no menus or program start icons. It was
not possible to move the firefox window. Firefox allows to browse by typing URL
and clicking on links. So I tried to look into help about, but no menu item
could be opened. Also the quit button failed. But I could browse and find keys
combination ctrl w (I believe). That closes the window. Then no more windows
can be opened. Also ctrl-alt-t and typing commands seem not to execute commands
(in an invisible underlying window).

Note that I did not change the package in which the bug is located. In
my humble opinion it is a kind of combination flaw where properties of
the kernel, X and the nvidia driver come together and manifest only on
certain hardware. There are similar bug reports that indicate a timing
issue. The changed behavior after installing python-launchpadlib may
support that. But having seen that the bug can manifest from live CD,
from classic hard drive and from SSD doesn't support the timing thing in
my view.

One more note (just trying to give information): I can boot into
advanced options, enable network, drop to root, and install or remove
software. By that I can add or remove the nvidia driver. By that, I can
switch on the bug or switch off - work around (price payed: low
resolution). Note also that I need to use nvidia-173. At least that is
the only one I found working on my hardware. The times I tried nouveau
there have been other issues, like not reaching the resolution of my
screen or just plain not working at all. Only starting

[Bug 1068601] Re: 10de:0322 12.10: Black screen with GeForce FX 5200 card

2013-05-29 Thread Rob Koll
Just want to give initial feedback, of course the experience of Graham
is more important. After burning the daily build live DVD taken from #63
my computer starts quite normal. It uses the nouveau driver, goes into
resolution 1680*1050. Works correct, quite slow. So no issues like black
screen. No confirmation the bug still exists. Now installing to hard
disk. Will check whether or not I can run with proprietary nvidia
driver. And bring that into the resulution from 24 inch screen
(1920*1200).

[Bug 1068601] Re: 10de:0322 12.10: Black screen with GeForce FX 5200 card

2013-05-29 Thread Rob Koll
Some more feedback. The install to hard disk seems to go well. Running
from hard disk, using nouveau driver, seems at first glance OK. I left
the system, later took out of screen saver. Background and top bar and
left side bar ok. But while attempting to open the system setting, the
initial menu only shows a rectangle with a king of garbled noisy
pattern, nothing readable. Opening a terminal by ctrl-alt-t opens a
comparable rectangle. Nothing readable, some kind of garbled noisy
pattern (there seems to be some regualarity, random colers/spots). So
the nouveau driver still has some issues. After opening ctrl-alt-F1
terminal (that works OK) and installing nvidia-173 (suitable for my
graphics card) and a reboot, the original black background issue is
again present. So the bug is confirmed using the daily build 13.10
downloaded 28-may-2013. I guess it would make sense to perform the
apport-collect thing. But as the terminal is not visible, I need to type
blind. Please advise on course of action. Attempt to perform the apport-
collect (might install a startup script, maybe some logging into file).
Can install the script after starting into one of the resque options. Or
does it make sense to kick out nvidia and continue on nouveau? Please
advise.

[Bug 1068601] Re: 12.10: Black screen with GeForce FX 5200 card

2013-03-17 Thread Rob Koll
I am experiencing the same problem. Using an p4p800 motherboard with AGP
nvidia card, FX5200. I can use nouveau, but that is far to slow and
doesn't give good resolution (24 inch philips diaply 1920 * 1200). On
ubuntu 12.04 i used nvidia driver 173 with modified xorg.conf which
resutled in good performance at 1920 * 1200. After upgrade to 12.10 the
screen shows one color and only the mouse pointer. When moving slowly on
the screen i can probe for edges of windows, the resize handle becomes
visible. When using that to guess where the exit cross of apps is, i
could close the music player. On 12.04 I had some start up applications
(thunderbird, rhtyhmbox). They really start, and by guessing where the
cross is i could close rhyhm player. Just don't see their windows. The
problem is very good reproducable on my machine (some people report that
it starts and stops with unknown triggers). The screen shows one color,
could be any. At some moments it even changes to some other color. Seems
not to be related to user actions. There seems not to be a scheme in the
change or colors. I will re-install the nvidia and collect some logs,
add them later. Now the system is set to nouveau. This is posted from
another disk and 12.04.

[Bug 1068601] Re: 12.10: Black screen with GeForce FX 5200 card

2013-03-17 Thread Rob Koll
Additional information to #56. Note that the start up applications have
been disabled (somewhere i read something on problems when switching
focus, and thought it was better to not have too many windows). Still
nothing, meaning one color plus mouse pointer. The size of the mouse
pointer indicates by the way that the screen is running in one of the
higher resolutions. When shutting down, the background image si visible
for a very short period, that also indicates that the nvidia driver is
at least doing something.
