RE: [Bug 1895870] Re: The only issue this bg causes is a slow down on the PC while it trys to repair the graphics issue.

2020-09-17 Thread Rob Thomas
The PC keeps asking to first do a Ubuntu 18 upgrade, which is not possible.
Then trys to do a fix for the previous video bug. I have reverted it back a few
updates and it is running better, but will eventually request to do an update
again. I believe Ubuntu 16 is still supported if not I will block all future
updates. Please let me know, and again thank you for your support.

[Bug 1847834] Re: Eaon Ermine Live Server can not create mirrored root

2019-10-13 Thread Rob Thomas
This was being tested on a HP DL380g8, which does not have UEFI, only
BIOS.

There was no way that I could figure out to actually raid the root using
the Live Installer. It was trivial and worked as expected using the
normal Server installer.

I realise that UEFI actually makes it harder to mirror root, as it (used
to?) require manual hacking to get both devices into the UEFI boot
order.

This can be trivially verified on virtual hardware, simply create a VM
with two hard drives, and try to get both of them active so the VM will
boot with one of them missing.

[Bug 1847835] Re: Firmware missing on Eaon Ermine live install media

2019-10-12 Thread Rob Thomas
The other issue I found -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/curtin/+bug/1847834 - means
that the server 'Live' media is not usable anyway, as you can not create
a mirrored root with it.

I have a sneaking suspicion that a lot of testing was done on VMs and
almost none was done on real hardware 8-\

After discovering other issues that made the live installer not
functional (See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/livecd-
rootfs/+bug/1847835) I gave up and went back to the NON Live ISO, which
let me create a mirrored root as expected.

[Bug 1847835] [NEW] Firmware missing on Eaon Ermine live install media

not functional.

There is this error when booting, implying that firmware is required but
not present:

[Bug 1847834] [NEW] Eaon Ermine Live Server can not create mirrored root

2019-10-11 Thread Rob Thomas
Public bug reported:

The historical way of installing with hardware redundancy is to create a
mirrored root volume, using mdraid.

This is no longer possible. There are several issues:

1. Randomly the 'Done' button will not go white, even if the configuration is
correct
2. There is a 'magic' gpt partition created on the first drive you select,
which is required for grub
3. If you remove that, to try to make grub install the old way, curtis crashes
with an error from grub-install saying that it can only install using blocklist
4. No partition is set active

This makes it impossible to actually install 19.10 in a redundant
manner, that can survive a hard drive failure.

[Bug 1783129] Re: Only "main" component enabled after install

2018-08-20 Thread Rob Thomas
Note, that pastebin is for 18.10 - Not 18.04.1 LTS. To fix 18.04.1 LTS
installation issues, use this sources.list:

curl https://pastebin.freepbx.org/view/raw/136f66ca >
/etc/apt/sources.list && apt-get update

That is a mirror of
https://gist.githubusercontent.com/jackw/d31140946901fab417131ff4d9ae92e3/raw/480bc68edae51e704114b0f4e256f543f25961af/sources.list
which I shortened for ease of pasting.

[Bug 1783129] Re: Only "main" component enabled after install

2018-08-20 Thread Rob Thomas
This just happened to me, and reading through, I noticed this is
triggered by cloud-init.

Is it possible that it's only biting people who install SSH keys with
cloud-init, as I was mildly surprised to see it running as part of boot.

(Screenshot:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.hipchat.com/190176/1597809/1iuhppYcWkjRHm7/upload.png
)

For people looking for a one-line fix, here it is:

curl https://pastebin.freepbx.org/view/raw/fca35292 > /etc/apt/sources.list &&
apt-get update

That paste is a mirror of the paste in #16 without the requirements to login.

[Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-12-20 Thread Rob Thomas
A method to repair machines was posted earlier, but may have been missed
in the noise.

Paul Sladen in #173 suggests that blacklisting the kernel module, and
then doing TWO COMPLETE REBOOTS will allow the BIOS to recover.

Looking at the code, this seems plausible.
