[Bug 932663] Re: kernel upgrade failed on a USB live system created by usb-creator

2012-12-03 Thread Roger Hunwicks
I'm not sure why this says Fix Released - it is still happening for me
on a 12.10 Live USB + persistence set up.

In fact, I got it trying to apt-get install mdadm - so it seems possible
it occurs any time update-initramfs runs rather than just on a kernel
update.

I suppose it is possible that if you can get the first update done using
Colin Watson's workaround that future updates will work, but install
from the 12.10 release Desktop iso doesn't.

[Bug 1078224] [NEW] apt-cacher-ng does not allow .o files to be downloaded

2012-11-13 Thread Roger Hunwicks
Public bug reported:

If you try to install a package that downloads a '.o' file, e.g. a
binary firmware for a wireless card, via apt-cacher-ng it fails because
the .o extension is not allowed:

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43legacy-installer b43-fwcutter
...
ERROR 403: Forbidden file type or location:
http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o.

The solution, as reported in #227240, is to edit /etc/apt-cacher-

the regular expression for extentions (|\.jigdo|\.template, etc.) to
include |\.o

[Bug 477430] Re: grub 2 error: out of disk. failed to boot default entries. press any key to continue...

2012-06-18 Thread Roger Hunwicks
I have this problem with an old machine where the BIOS does not
recognize the full size of the hard disk.

The machine is a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop and the BIOS recognizes the
disk as 137GB even though it is really 250GB.

Grub2 won't boot off a partition that goes beyond where the BIOS sees
the end of the disk, which is how Ubuntu is installed by default (with a
single large partition).

I can work around the problem by using manual partitioning during the
installation and making sure that /boot is on a partition that is in the
first 137GB of the drive - in my case I created a separate 1GB partition
at /dev/sda1 and mounted it as /boot.

My source of inspiration was http://www.dudek.org/blog/220

[Bug 952063] Re: Cannot boot server using mdadm RAID1 after creating LVM snapshot

2012-03-12 Thread Roger Hunwicks
When it boots it pauses for a long time trying to mount the root volume
and then the screen shows

udevd[119]: 'watershed sh -c '/sbin/lvm vgscan; sbin/lvm vgchange -ay'' [264]
terminated by signal 9 (Killed)
device-mapper: table: 252:8: snapshot: Snapshot cow pairing for exception table
handover failed

The logical volumes all seem to work correctly after you boot into a
livecd - i.e. I can assemble the raid arrays, enable the volume groups
and then mount the logical volumes - at least the ones that contain
actual filesystems - the ones that contain vms I haven't done anything
with.

[Bug 952063] Re: Cannot boot server using mdadm RAID1 after creating LVM snapshot

2012-03-12 Thread Roger Hunwicks
I can install ubuntu-libvirt-host in the USB livecd and then run the
virtual machines, so all the LVM volume groups seem to be intact.

I don't seem to have any broken volume groups, but does the fact that
the boot process is attempting vgchange -ay mean that the boot will fail
if any of the LVM volume groups cannot be started, even if the broken
one is not needed to start the system?

[Bug 952063] [NEW] Cannot boot server using mdadm RAID1 after creating LVM snapshot

2012-03-11 Thread Roger Hunwicks
Public bug reported:

I'm running a test server on Precise to act as a KVM host. The virtual
machines are using LVM logical volumes as backing stores. I have created
several virtual machines by taking an LVM snapshot of a base image. When
I rebooted the server, it no longer boots.

After switching grub to use the console I get messages similar to the
ones reported here: http://www.redhat.com/archives/linux-
lvm/2012-February/msg00032.html - i.e. Snapshot cow pairing for
exception table handover failed

The server has 2 2TB SATA drives - partitioned into a smallish sdX1 and
a large sdX5. sda1/sdb1 make a mdadm RAID 1 array md0, sda2/sdb2 make
md0. Both md devices are clean. md0 contains vgSystem with logical
volumes for root, boot and swap. md1 contains vgVMs with logical volumes
for all the virtual machines.

I can boot the server of a USB stick and then assemble the md arrays and
enable the volume groups and everything seems intact

dpkg-query --search libkdc-policy.so
in an installation with the samba4 package shows
samba4: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/samba/libkdc-policy.so

but I think the file should be in samba4-common-bin rather than samba4,
so that you can run testparm to check the format of smb.conf prior to
installing samba4

[Bug 832465] Re: package samba4 4.0.0~alpha17~git20110807.dfsg1-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-11-08 Thread Roger Hunwicks
One problem seems to be the samba4 postinst script is getting some
values (realm, domain, netbios name, server role) from samba-common, and
samba-common doesnt seem to use the values in smb.conf, particularly for
domain.

My workaround is to
sudo apt-get install samba4-common-bin

then create replace the smb.conf file with a samba4 one, e.g. generated from a
working samba4 installation, such as:
# Global parameters
[global]
server role = domain controller
workgroup = EXAMPLE
realm = example.com
netbios name = SERVER

[netlogon]
path = /var/lib/samba/sysvol/example.com/scripts
read only = No

[sysvol]
path = /var/lib/samba/sysvol
read only = No

Then run
sudo /var/lib/dpkg/info/samba-common.config

If you don't do the step above, then when samba4 installs, the postinst
script attempts to provision the server, but debconf returns the domain
as WORKGROUP instead of EXAMPLE and the provision fails - I don't know
if this means the bug is in samba-common rather than samba4?

Then run
sudo apt-get install samba4
and it should all work correctly

[Bug 527458] Re: please include status messages/tooltips

2010-03-29 Thread Roger Hunwicks
I would like to add my voice to those asking for the previous behaviour
to be reinstated.

I can see the place for less is more in terms of removing screen
clutter and user interactions that do not add value. Tooltips that
tell you what something does seem to be a candidate for this and the
argument for self-explanatory icons is strong.

However, as a previous comment says, there are very few universally
understood icons, and something that is an obvious icon to me might not
be in another culture.

Given that the clutter only appears at the users request, I would
rather have a few redundant tooltips than have a group of users unsure
what an icon is for and with no easy way to find out.

I think that where tooltips are actually providing status information
rather than what am I the case for reinstating them is even stronger.
The ability to check on the status of some aspect of the system without
focusing away from the current application is an important interaction
for many users. In my case, like many others, it is minutes of battery
life remaining. If we can find a better way to provide this information,
without requiring more clicks or changes of application focus then
great, but please can we wait until we have found a better solution
before removing the 90% solution we already have.

Finally, doing this in a LTS seems a high-risk strategy to me. I can see
that we don't want the LTS to be stuck with an obsolete user interface
paradigm and that increases the pressure to introduce some things that
might have benefited from being introduced in Lucid+1 (where they could
be dropped in Lucid+2 if they don't work out). However, I am also
worried that if we introduce things in an LTS then there will be a great
deal of reluctance to go back to the old way even if the new way doesn't
work out.

[Bug 401657] [NEW] There is no Paste Unformatted or Paste Special in Evolution

2009-07-20 Thread Roger Hunwicks
Public bug reported:

It is incredibly inconvenient when you want to copy text from a web browser and
paste it into an HTML-formatted email.

Unless you run glipper or an alternative (all of which have problems, e.g. with
the Gimp), then you need to start a text editor, paste into that and then
recopy the text and then paste it into the Evolution compose window.

This bug already exists upstream as
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=302941

I think this should be a candidate for 100 Paper Cuts

[Bug 348126] Re: ssh are using ssh-userauth but ignores private key

2009-04-01 Thread Roger Hunwicks
I have a system running Jaunty Beta AMD64 with ssh 1:5.1p1-5ubuntu1.

I have two private keys, both of which are valid in a number of remote
servers. If I copy one of the keys to ~/.ssh/id_rsa everything works
correctly. If I copy the other key to ~/.ssh/id_rsa it does not work
within gnome using seahorse and ssh-agent, but it does work from a non-
Gnome session. Both keys work correctly in Intrepid. Both keys were
originally generated using PuttyGen on Windows. Looking at the trace at
the end of this response, does seahorse have an issue if the key is only
1023 bits instead of 1024?

It works from a non-Gnome session:
Ctrl-Alt-F2
Login using Username/Password,
$ ssh server.example.com
Enter passphrase for key /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa
Connects correctly.

But it doesn't work within Gnome:
Start Gnome Terminal
$ ssh server.example.com
Gnome dialog box pops up asking for passphrase
Permission denied (publickey,gssapi-with-mic).

$ ssh -vvv server.example.com
snip
debug1: Offering public key: /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa
debug3: send_pubkey_test
debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply

debug3: no such identity: /home/user/.ssh/id_dsa
debug2: we did not send a packet, disable method
debug1: No more authentication methods to try.
Permission denied (publickey,gssapi-with-mic).

For comparison, using the same key in the terminal session (i.e. no ssh-agent,
no seahorse):
debug1: Offering public key: /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa
debug3: send_pubkey_test
debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply
debug1: Server accepts key: pkalg ssh-rsa blen 148
debug2: input_userauth_pk_ok: fp ed:snip
debug3: sign_and_send_pubkey

debug1: read PEM private key done: type unknown
Enter passphrase for key '/home/user/.ssh/id_rsa':
debug1: read PEM private key done: type RSA
debug1: Authentication succeeded (publickey).

Also, using the same key in the terminal session but using ssh-agent (still no
seahorse):
$ eval `ssh-agent`
Agent pid 25343
$ trap kill $SSH_AGENT_PID 0
$ ssh-add ~/.ssh/id_rsa
Enter passphrase for /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa:
Identity added: /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa (/home/user/.ssh/id_rsa)
$ ssh -vvv server.example.com
snip
debug1: Offering public key: /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa
debug3: send_pubkey_test
debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply
debug1: Server accepts key: pkalg ssh-rsa blen 148
debug2: input_userauth_pk_ok: fp ed:snip
debug3: sign_and_send_pubkey
debug1: Authentication succeeded (publickey).

Finally, using the good key that works inside Gnome:
In Gnome, start Gnome Terminal
$ ssh -vvv server.example.com
snip
debug1: Offering public key: /home/user/.ssh/id_rsa
debug3: send_pubkey_test
debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply
debug1: Server accepts key: pkalg ssh-rsa blen 149
debug2: input_userauth_pk_ok: fp snip
debug3: sign_and_send_pubkey
debug1: Authentication succeeded (publickey).

I captured the full trace for a Gnome login using the good key and the bad key
and did a diff:

[Bug 348126] Re: ssh are using ssh-userauth but ignores private key

2009-04-01 Thread Roger Hunwicks
@rancor

Can you try your key that doesn't work using ssh-agent in a non-Gnome
session, either by switching to a different TTY or by ssh'ing into the
Jaunty box from elsewhere (without Agent Forwarding: ssh -a ...)?

It might be that the problem is with seahorse rather than openssh-
client, given my key works outside Gnome but not inside it, regardless
of whether I use ssh-agent or ssh -i

Reading https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-

agent, so maybe the problem is with that rather than seahorse.
