[Bug 1772791] [NEW] Lock Screen displayed password in clear text on one occasion

2018-05-22 Thread Roshan George
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Hello, folks,

Today when I returned to my computer (which I locked with Super+L) and
attempted to unlock it, it displayed my passphrase in cleartext in the
'Password' box. I noticed as soon as I got the first character in, then
typed in the second character and it stayed clear. I then picked up my
phone to record the attached video and while I was fiddling with it to
get a good camera shot, the screen locked (for inactivity perhaps?) and
when I unlocked this time, the password only displayed as dots (as
expected).

So unfortunately, I don't know how to replicate. It _did_ occur though,
as the attached video will show if you go slowly (look for "hu", the
first characters of legendary password "hunter2").

[Bug 873187] [NEW] Eclipse does not include the relevant software plugin repository

2011-10-13 Thread Roshan George
Public bug reported:

Among the 'Available Update Sites' listing in Eclipse's preferences are
repositories for the previous releases (including updates for 3.4, 3.5,
3.6 and a release repo for helios). However, the version of Eclipse in
Ubuntu is 3.7 (Indigo) so the corresponding repository for indigo:
http://download.eclipse.org/releases/indigo/ should be included there
and enabled by default. The absence of this repository and the fact that
eclipse-gef is not packaged means that certain plugins (like the Android
Development Tools plugin) will fail to install without adding the indigo
repository first.

In earlier releases, the lack of this repository bug #474888 and others,
and it was fixed by including the corresponding software repositories
for helios (the previous Eclipse release).

[Bug 777452] Re: Huge number of 'Disk Utility' notification windows

2011-10-11 Thread Roshan George
I'm changing this to Confirmed because I can reproduce it easily.

1. Get a disk with SMART reporting imminent failure

2. Start Ubuntu and login

3. You get a huge number of alert boxes complaining about this.

Expected Behaviour:

We get one alert box warning us of this on each boot similar to the
battery warning (when you are told that your battery is known to fail
and needs to be replaced).

obnoxious.

2010-01-12 Thread Roshan George
Hi. I've added a screenshot showing what happened.

Unfortunately, the example text I mentioned in the report doesn't work
if you just copy-paste it. You have to put the tab and the # in
manually.

[Bug 505168] Re: Evince deletes temporary image file obtained from PDF as soon as PDF is closed

2010-01-11 Thread Roshan George
I sort of accidentally stumbled on this feature because of my touchpad.
I'll detail Step 2 if it will help.

Step II broken down:

1. Click on an image in the part of the Evince window displaying the PDF.
2. Drag the image a little bit (a few pixels is sufficient)
3. Drop it on the same part of the Evince window displaying the PDF.
4. Ta-dah! It displays in a new Evince window.

I'm perfectly satisfied to use the Right-Click - Save Image As...
feature but the thing is that sometimes it's iffy because there's text
embedded in the PDF and that gets selected and I don't get the right
context menu. If, however, I do the drag thing I can instantly tell
what's happening (either I'm getting the image, or text is getting
selected).

[Bug 505414] [NEW] Evolution mail print preview makes some lines blank

2010-01-10 Thread Roshan George
Public bug reported:

[Bug 468184] [NEW] grub.cfg is not properly set up for memtest when /boot is on a different partition

2009-11-01 Thread Roshan George
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

Hi,

I'm running the Ubuntu 9.10 beta with all upgrades as of November 1.
During installation I chose to put /boot on a separate partition
/dev/sda2 but now that I try to run memtest it fails saying File not
found. The other entries (which all work) in /boot/grub/grub.cfg have
the following line:

set root=(hd0,2)

Editing grub.cfg to include this line first allows memtest to start.

[Bug 423969] Re: Safe Graphics Mode doesn't force VESA

2009-10-20 Thread Roshan George
Hi,

I'm having this trouble on an Asus M2N-PV-DVI (it has onboard Nvidia
7050). I tried the following from the LiveCD with the corresponding
results:

1. Regular boot without changing any parameters - Screen with green lines all
over. Cannot switch to virtual terminal but SysRq works.
2. Boot in Safe Graphics Mode - Screen with green lines all over. Everything as
above.
3. Boot with boot parameter 'single', then edit xorg.conf to select vesa
driver, then startx - Ubuntu boots.

I am using the ubuntu-9.10-desktop-1386 ISO downloaded on Oct 19, 3.30
PM GMT approximately, if that helps.

[Bug 277195] Re: Mouse scroll wheel moves between desktops when over parts of application windows

2009-06-17 Thread Roshan George
This happens to me too, both in Evolution as described in the bug report
and in liferea at the status bar, and just above the song progress bar
in Rhythmbox. The last instance is particularly annoying because I
sometimes scroll over the progress bar to move the audio forward and if
I miss I find myself on the wrong workspace. Very annoying indeed.

Disabling the Viewport Switcher stops the problem, but using the Compiz
default settings the Viewport Switcher is enabled. Perhaps it is best to
have the default set to disabled.

[Bug 375924] Re: iwlagn driver crashes, preventing shutdown from completing

2009-06-16 Thread Roshan George
Hi, Leann,

I have attached a photograph of the screen that displays when it
crashes. Unfortunately, the top part of that text is snipped because it
scrolls by too fast. Is there some way of making the shutdown log to a
text file? The laptop then just does nothing after saying Will now
halt. Occasionally hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del at this point will say
something like Stopping all md devices... and then restart, but it's
impossible to tell when this will work and when it won't. When it
doesn't, there is no response whatsoever.

[Bug 375924] [NEW] iwlagn driver crashes, preventing shutdown from completing

2009-05-13 Thread Roshan George
Public bug reported:

Nearly every time I shutdown, the iwlagn driver crashes and shutdown is
interrupted. At this point, the only way I can shutdown is by holding

[Bug 365140] [NEW] Evolution displays folder as unread even though all mail in it is read

2009-04-22 Thread Roshan George
Public bug reported:

This happens sporadically. I have attached a screenshot showing what I
mean. That folder still shows as unread in the side pane, yet filtering
for Unread Messages in the list shows none. I've also looked through the
entire list of messages and there are no new messages.

Thinking it a graphic glitch, I tried collapsing and expanding the list
in the side pane but neither that nor minimising and restoring the
window helped. It is just a minor annoyance, but I decided to mention it
anyway.

[Bug 362399] Re: Evolution freezes every time after a Google iCal is added

2009-04-19 Thread Roshan George
I started Evolution (with gdb) again a little while later (I had
previously clicked Force Quit on the previous Evolution window). A
dialog box came up asking me if I wanted to Ignore the previous crash or
Recover from it. I was unable to click either of the options - there was
simply no response to clicking on them.

After this I ran Evolution (with gdb again) again, and immediately after
that the recovery dialog disappeared and Evolution started. I now had
two responsive Evolution windows.

I then clicked the 'Calendars' tab on the first Evolution window at
which point it froze. The backtrace attached with this comment is the
backtrace from this Evolution window.

[Bug 362399] [NEW] Evolution freezes every time after a Google iCal is added

2009-04-16 Thread Roshan George
Public bug reported:

After adding a Google iCal, Evolution crashes and does not start again.
It is impossible to then remove the iCal setting because clicking the
Calendar tab in Evolution makes it freeze. Clicking the clock applet to
display the calendar will freeze gnome-panel.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Use a Google Calendar account iCal feed.
2. Subscribe to it in Evolution.

I'd give more detailed information, but I can't check what I've done
because I can't access the Calendars page ever since the gvfs upgrade
yesterday (Apr 16).

[Bug 319508] [NEW] Liferea segmentation fault on start

2009-01-21 Thread Roshan George
Public bug reported:

Liferea crashes with a segmentation fault when started. It used to work,
but then started having trouble updating. Now, with no .liferea-1.4
directory (and hence, no database), it crashes instantly on start
(output is attached).

Versions:
Liferea 1.4.14
Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.1 x86_64, 2.6.24-23-generic
Python 2.5.2 (package version 2.5.2-2ubuntu4.1)

[Bug 214192] Re: liferea-bin crashed with SIGSEGV in _nss_wins_gethostbyname_r()

2009-01-21 Thread Roshan George
Emilio, wins (Windows Internet Name Service) is necessary in
nsswitch.conf if one is to get Windows-like Name Resolution. Since I
have a Windows computer on this network, and I wish to connect to it by
hostname, it requires wins in nsswitch.conf.

I, apparently, have this very problem. No, Liferea does not start if
launched with sudo either. The error remains the same.

[Bug 308114] [NEW] hald-addon-storage uses up all CPU when DVD is ejected

2008-12-14 Thread Roshan George
Public bug reported:

Ejecting a DVD caused hald-addon-storage to go to 90% CPU (oddly,
liferea-bin also went to 90% CPU, but killing hald-addon-storage
alleviated the problem). I can't seem to reliably replicate this. It has
happened once or twice.

Steps:
1. Set dev.cdrom.lock=0 in /etc/sysctl.conf
2. Have a DVD in the drive.
3. Hit the Eject button on the laptop
4. hald-addon-storage eats CPU _sometimes_.

If I may venture a reason for this problem it is that the virtualbox-

[Bug 301054] [NEW] Title text longer than a certain amount will not show in Element Properties dialog box

2008-11-22 Thread Roshan George
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.04.1
Firefox 3.0.4

Problem:
If the text specified in the title attribute in an image tag is longer than a
certain amount, it will go off the edge of the Element Properties dialog box.
The box has to be resized horizontally.

Expected Result:
Resizing the Element Properties dialog box to give it more height should allow
the Alt text to wrap and display in the space provided or the dialog box should
open in the correct size to display the text.

Steps to recreate:
1. Visit a site with long text in the title attribute for an image. For
example: http://www.arjie.com/alt-text-firefox.html or http://xkcd.com/269/
2. Right-click on the image.
3. Select Element Properties.
4. Resize dialog in different directions.

[Bug 300761] [NEW] F-spot imports all photos to the root of the home directory in the absence of a Photos folder

2008-11-21 Thread Roshan George
Public bug reported:

Fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04.1 but I have all updates (no backports)
until Nov 21, 2008. I have never opened F-spot before, it popped up when
I plugged my Nikon DC 995 camera in the USB port.

The Problem:
F-spot complains that a 'Photos' folder is not present.
F-spot creates the folder.
F-spot dumps all pictures into ~ ( /home/username )

Steps to reproduce:
1. Fresh Ubuntu.
2. Check to see if 'Photos' folder is present.

[Bug 272557] Re: Leaving an SD card in the slot when suspending creates a white nautilus window on awake

2008-11-13 Thread Roshan George
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 160264 ***

Are you certain? The Nautilus window for the SD card pops up even if it
wasn't open. Meaning:

1. No Nautilus window open.
2. Suspend.
3. Nautilus window for SD card is already open. (incidentally it is white)

Just emphasizing that it's weird that the window opened up on its own.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: nautilus

- If I leave an SD card in my laptop while suspending then on the next
- awake a nautilus window appears with the title of the SD card, as if a
- card had just been inserted.
+ If an SD card is present in the laptop card-reader while suspending,
+ then a full screen nautilus window is open on the active workspace when

+ nautilus window on the desktop while suspending.
+

2008-11-02 Thread Roshan George
Whoops sorry, here's the stuff you asked for.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open a nautilus window, and also another window (I usually have Evolution
open, and sometimes Firefox)
2. Put the laptop into suspend using the button in the top right
3. Make the laptop resume (to do this I have to use my power button)
4. Only the Nautilus windows and sometimes the notifications that pop up in the
bottom-right are flat blank white. Other windows display fine.

My system:
Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit
Dell XPS M1330
NVidia GeForce 8400M GS - I have enabled the Restricted Driver for this in the
System » Administration » Hardware Drivers. I think this uses nvidia-glx-new

2008-11-02 Thread Roshan George
Sorry for the multiple comments, but I thought maybe it would just help
if I provide all the information that is relevant.

Just before the screen resumes to the password dialog, I get a message at a
console saying:-
kernel: [ 444.679922] MMC: killing requests for dead queue
I can attach the entire log if you want.

The problem doesn't occur if I don't have a SD card in the card reader.
It also did not happen just now to windows on other workspaces, but it
does _always_ happen to the Nautilus window on the workspace I resume
to.

[Bug 125970] Re: slow scroll with image as background-repeat

2008-10-16 Thread Roshan George
My CPU usage does go up to 50-60% on each core when I scroll with a
fixed image on screen. When there's no such image, the scrolling goes by
without any noticeable increase in CPU usage. It's much better than
before now, at least it's usable, previously it was hell. But now I can
actually smooth scroll, even though it's jerky and the CPU usage goes so
high.

Jean-Christophe: I have only downloaded all the updates that came in and
I only remember the kernel, some hal, some dbus. Sorry, is there some
way I can retrieve a log of all the updates that I have performed in the
last few days? Perhaps that will help.

[Bug 175311] When a partly transparent gradient is used for the Area fill in a rectangle Shape, the entire fill disappears in slideshow mode.

2007-12-10 Thread Roshan George
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org2

The Problem:
Filling a rectangle with a partly transparent gradient makes the entire
gradient disappear in slideshow mode. So the entire fill disappears. The box
becomes completely transparent despite the normal slide view showing the
correct result.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Make a rectangle Shape using the toolbar button.
2. Select the Format » Area menu item.
3. Select the Transparency tab.
4. Make a linear gradient. I used 15 degrees, 5% border, 5% Start Value, 95%
End Value but the problem occurs for defaults 0, 0, 0, 100% too.
5. Switch to Slide Show.
