[Bug 1881322] Re: Touchpad not detected in 'Lenovo V15-IIL model 82C5' after installing Ubuntu 20.04

2021-04-27 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
This workes for me on a Lenovo V15-II

Edit `/etc/default/grub` and change the line
"GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT" adding "i8042.nopnp=1" within the quotes.

Run `sudo update-grub`

Reboot.

[Bug 1729389] Re: Bluetooth mouse and keyboard connects, works for a few seconds, then doesn't react

2017-12-06 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
This is a problem on my Dell XPS 13 with Ubuntu 17.10 as well.
I upgraded from the supported 16.04 LTS that it came with and my peripherals
are dropping out on me.

Good to hear it's getting fixed.

2017-05-13 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
Thanks. Glad you took the time to reply. The bug report is five years
old, and I have long since upgraded to latest Ubuntu a few times. 

On the other hand, I am thankful that Ubuntu is coming back into Gnome
proper going forward. I never was too enthused by the conflicts
inflicted by Unity bring separate but still using Gnome applications.

Good luck, and thanks.

[Bug 1334954] [NEW] Complete HUAWEI Mobile broadband E352 support

2014-06-26 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
Public bug reported:

usb_modeswitch kernel module tells me to report this bug :)

The modem works fine, it's just not stable.
Unplugging and reinserting creates a kernel oops that seems to prevent halting
the system.

First time I plugged it in, I got an U-DEV popup error message. A little
after that, there was a question about PIN code and the modem worked.

Unplugging and reinstering the device, it won't work. I have to reboot.

I added four lines in usb_modeswitch.conf:
DefaultVendor=12d1
DefaultProduct=14fe
TargetVendor=12d1
TargetProduct=1506

At the last reboot, this made the U-DEV popup disappear and the modem
asks for the PIN and works.

The work_device.txt attachment shows the kernel log for this event.

I will upload the log for when I unplug and reinsert the device as a
separate file.

[Bug 585765] Re: [HP ProBook 6440b] Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2013-11-04 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
I am currently running 13.04 and the same problem is still present. It's
been with me since 12.04

But now I have discovered a pattern to these freezes: My power cord is
always unplugged when Ubuntu freezes.

I have a usage pattern that might have an impact: Whenever the screen
saver is starting (the desktop is fading out), I push shift or move my
mouse to avoid having to write the password. I know, it's odd behavior
since I could just prolong the timeout.

Clearly this has to do with power management, anyway.

2012-11-02 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
Christopher,

I'm trying out upstream kernel 3.4-precise, the latest for the 12.04
release. I'll report any further freezes, or if the freeze disappears
within a week.

Runar Ingebrigtsen, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in
the mainline kernels archive directory daily folder, but the one all the way
at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on
which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the
mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
 kernel-fixed-upstream
 kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
 example:
 kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.7-rc1-quantal

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon
next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well,
 please remove the tag:
 needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
 kernel-bug-exists-upstream
 kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
 needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why
specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
 kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
 kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 675792] [NEW] Last page get written over when moving the page being scanned

2010-11-15 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: simple-scan

I was scanning a several page document in simple-scan. While adding a
page I decided to arrange the pages in a different order. So i moved a
page backword (left), and then I was going to move the page that was
being scanned. I clicked and moved the page left, and the page with the
turning symbol (indicating loading) moved left to where I wanted it.

Except it kept turning. So I looked back at the last page and saw it was
overwritten with the content that I expected to see on the page with the
turning symbol.

I had to scan both pages again after deleting them, then move them
around, to get the desired outcome.

Re: [Bug 422858] Re: Atom N280 frequency scaling not supported

2010-01-06 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
I am in contact with Acer Level 2 support and they have been friendly
but unable to help me out. According to them, the D250 with Windows 7
they have for testing shows no issues like this at all. It fully runs at
1.66 GHz.

I was asked to return my laptop to second level support for a closer
review, but right now I can't do that since I have no other computer for
school usage.

So I'm stuck. Acer says nothing's wrong and won't accept that there
might be without seeing a customer case in person.

I am interested enough that I consider buying a new computer just to let
them lay their hands on my existing. It's just that I'm a student...
Sigh. How hard can it be, really?

You are absolutely correct that this is a real bug, but you overestimate
the area of function for this particular bug tracker. This is a BIOS
bug, in a Ubuntu bug tracker regarding the Ubuntu implementation of the
software called CPU frequency daemon. As such, the area of function for
this bug tracker does not coincide with the technology in which we have
located this bug. Alas, the bug is invalid in the given area.

We all agree this bug should be fixed by the relevant party, but this
has nothing to do with Ubuntu and will not ever have anything to do with
Ubuntu.

I'm not sure I would like to see this bug closed, but I understand every

I have the same issue with my BCM4312 card. After applying the

going from a secure to an unsecure network but will get back with an
update on that tomorrow. If I can reproduce the non-resolving issue

[Bug 449268] Re: Karmic Restricted Driver Bug

2009-11-16 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
I have the same issue with the final 9.10 CD. I ran the Live session
from the CD and installed the bcmwl-kernel-source package. The Hardware
wizard then said I needed to reboot, which I didn't. Instead I just
selected the wireless network I wanted to use in the nm-applet and
voilá. So I get wireless while using the LiveCD. Not easy though. I
guess not many regular users could do this.

Re: [Bug 422858] Re: Atom N280 frequency scaling not supported

2009-11-11 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
I received an email from Acer Norway about my Acer Aspire One D250,
translated quote:

We have reached the conclusion that Intel's EIST power saving feature
is the source of varying frequency for this model. In our custom BIOS'
there is no switch for this feature, which means there is no choice but
to run the computer with this feature enabled. To correct this behavior
I made a request for a BIOS release with a direct option to deactivate
Intel EIST. Please use the attached BIOS version and get back to me with
your results.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to flash my BIOS with this new version
yet. My problem is that it's DOS-dependent and the flashit program just
crashed on me when running it in FreeDOS from a USB memory stick. I have
made a request for a Windows version like former BIOS releases from
Acer, as I dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu.

I don't dare to upload that BIOS release here on launchpad.net, due to
it's potential to brick computers and likely copyright restrictions.

All in all I'm having a positive dialogue with Acer. I will recommend
that you make contact with the support crew for your computer maker and
let them know about this bug here on launchpad. I insisted on getting
technical support in spite of the usual mindless comments like you have
to return your PC so we can repair it from 1st level support. I got
forwarded to 2nd level support and they actually look into this issue,
which is more than we are all used to expect. I also sent them all the
links I from launchpad.

Sending copy of this comment to Acer Nordic 2nd level support, so here
goes signature.

Best Regards
Runar Ingebrigtsen

[Bug 436257] [NEW] GDM locale.conf format issue gives ugly language options

2009-09-24 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

The Norwegian locale lines in /etc/gdm/locale.conf is formatted
incorrectly which leads to very ugly language option for the login
screen.

The Norwegian Bokmål option is displayed as
Norwegian,_BokmU00E5l(Norway) in the login screen which leads to
confusion for users.

I suggest the locale.conf file should rather include the following lines to
describe the Norwegian options:
Norwegian(Bokmål) nb_NO
Norwegian(Bokmål) nb_NO.UTF-8
Norwegian(Bokmål) no_NO
Norwegian(Bokmål) no_NO.UTF-8
Norwegian(Nynorsk) nn_NO
Norwegian(Nynorsk) nn_NO.UTF-8

I have changed these lines according to my suggestion on my 9.04
installation and it all looks good and tidy now.

[Bug 425040] Re: ecryptfs PAM module causes slow authentication

2009-09-06 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
I tried to remove the ecryptfs-utils package but that resulted in the
pam_ecryptfs module being reenabled in my common_auth. Then I removed
the libecryptfs0 package and the pam_ecryptfs module got disabled.

Also, I never opted in for any home directory encryption, and I never
asked for the package. Exactly where is it I would have the option to
choose home dir encryption, as you say?

[Bug 425040] [NEW] ecryptfs PAM module causes slow authentication

2009-09-05 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
Public bug reported:

The following line in /etc/pam.d/common-auth causes heavy delay in system
authentication:
authoptionalpam_ecryptfs.so unwrap

This default PAM module in Ubuntu causes slow logon times and a very
annoying delay in the unlock process of gnome-screensaver. The
difference in terms of user experience between keeping this module and
disabling this module is huge, especially compared to Windows 7 and OS X
screensaver unlock.

I recorded the following average times when debugging the unlock delay:
VT1 bash LOGIN times:
Default: ~ 2.8 seconds
No ecryptfs: ~ 1.1 seconds

gnome-screensaver unlock times:
Default: ~ 2.3 seconds
Ecryptfs, no gnome-keyring: ~ 2.0 seconds
No ecryptfs: ~ 0.7 seconds
Keyring, no ecrypt: ~ 0.7 seconds

In other words: By disabling ecryptfs in PAM common_auth I went from
experiencing a hang in the gnome-screensaver unlock screen, with the
password field greyed out, to an immediate desktop appearance after
typing the password. Furthermore, at the same time I saw a significant
reduction of login delay at the terminal. I didn't bother timing the GDM
login times, as they're sure to be faster as well.

My simple request is herefore that the pam_ecryptfs module is henceforth
disabled from the default Ubuntu configuration, based on this upgrade of
the overall user experience in a significant area - the reactivation of
the desktop after suspend, hibernate and general AFK. As per the
usefulness of this module, I can't imagine the average user will miss
the option to encrypt folders.

For advanced users, there need to be a different way to let them encrypt
folders than putting this big hurdle in the face of regular users.

And no, this is not the same problem as #105101 - as my disabling the
pam_ecryptfs line in common_auth doesn't seem to affect the speed at
which the password dialog in gnome-screensaver appears.

Thanks.

[Bug 422858] [NEW] Atom N280 frequency scaling not supported

2009-09-01 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
Public bug reported:

Seems like there's a few people out there with a common problem. I can't
get my Ubuntu 9.04 to manage the frequency of the Atom N280 CPU at 1,6
GHz on my Acer One D250 HD.

A quick google with bing later I found that I could sudo modprobe
acpi_cpufreq except this returns FATAL: Module acpi_cpufreq not
found. A sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-applets didn't cut it either.

/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies returns:
1333000 1066000 80

Which shouldn't be, as /proc/cpuinfo, as well as Windows 7, states it's a
1,66GHz:
model name : Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N280 @ 1.66GHz
stepping: 2
cpu MHz : 1333.000
power management:

Though it seems the frequency is locked at 1,3GHz and that there's no
power management involved.

- flash videos that play audio (e.g. http://video.google.com)
+ 1. Start Epiphany browser with flashplugin-nonfree and navigate to
+ Youtube.com

- 2. Play a video for a few seconds then navigate away from the page using
- your browsers back button. On occasion Firefox will freeze and have to
- be terminated.
+ 2. Play videos by either
+ a) Play the whole video till end, then click one of the relevant videos in
the flash window
+ b) Play the video and click on the link to a different one during playback
+ c) Play a playlist of videos and use the next link from time to time
+
+ In other words, use Youtube like it's ment to be used. Sooner or later,
+ Epiphany crashes. Sometimes it will crash every time I restore the
+ Epiphany and try to navigate the same.

[Bug 315257] [NEW] Installer and color sight problems

2009-01-08 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I am red/green color blind. The choice of red and green tones in the
partition editor section of the installer is very hard to distinguish.
It would be better if there was either a black line between each
partition or if the red and green colors had a greater contrast when put
aside each other.

Color blindness doesn't necessarily mean I see only black and white, as
I see both red and green though I'm red/green color blind. Still it
takes concentration to see the difference with the current choice of
colors.

As per statistics color blindness is pretty common. I think the design
should respect that.

Thanks.

[Bug 272254] [NEW] Option Icon 225 HSDPA mobile broadband modem not detected

2008-09-19 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

The modem depends on usb_modeswitch
(http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/), which I load using udev
rules (attached).

To connect with the modem, I have to use HSOconnect
(http://www.pharscape.org/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,68/page,viewtopic/t,474/),
as that's the only way I've found to work. wvdial doesn't detect the
modem, even if I load the usbserial module on it, and the same applies
to gnome-ppp.

Then network-manager is no better off. I can't see any way to tell
network-manager that I have this modem connected to my computer. It's
loaded with the hso module, but network-manager doesn't detect the
ttyUSB's either.

[Bug 259028] Re: 0.7, 3G USB devices detected by usb-storage maybe need modeswitch

2008-09-18 Thread Runar Ingebrigtsen
I have Telenor Mobile Broadband in Norway. My USB adapter identify as
0af0:6971 Option.

I can't get network-manager to recognize this as a modem even if I am
able to load the usbserial module with it.

I am able to connect using HSOConnect, though. The problem with this
approach is that HSOConnect doesn't integrate with network-manager, so
not all GNOME programs accept the fact they're online. In Firefox I had
to remove the work offline tick from the file menu to be able to surf.

Why wouldn't networ-manager connect through my ttyUSBs?
