[Bug 1878578] Re: Some menu icons are missing

2020-05-22 Thread Shane Synan
I've found a workaround until the proper fix gets backported. This is
not supported and may break things. Proceed at your own risk (there is
a way to undo this).

Install the latest `mypaint-data` from the current Ubuntu 20.10
(`groovy`) builds.

1. Visit https://packages.ubuntu.com/groovy/all/mypaint-data/download
2. Download the .deb file from any mirror
3. Install via package manager (QApt, dpkg, Ubuntu Software, etc)
$ sudo dpkg -i mypaint-data_2.0.*_all.deb
$ # Example:
$ # sudo dpkg -i mypaint-data_2.0.0+git20200502-1_all.deb

If you want to undo the changes, you can downgrade `mypaint-data`:
$ sudo apt install mypaint-data=2.0.0-2

The exact version may change! Check `apt-cache show mypaint-data | grep
'Version'`.

I've put a bit more information about this workaround on the upstream MyPaint
issue as well:

Time to file a new bug on the Debian bug tracker for reinclusion into

[Bug 1809407] Re: [nvidia] Corrupted wallpaper after resuming from suspend or hibernation

2019-12-01 Thread Shane Synan
Having recently tried upgrading an 18.04 system to 19.10, I can confirm
~rigues 's behavior - complete screen corruption after resuming from
suspend when using the Nouveau driver (NVidia driver only partly
corrupts).

However, this (corrupted screen, no workaround) might be different
enough from a corrupted wallpaper (which can be dismissed) that it
warrants a separate/new bug report?

[Bug 1809407] Re: [nvidia] Corrupted wallpaper after resuming from suspend or hibernation

2019-10-09 Thread Shane Synan
I've had this issue in the past on Ubuntu 18.04 with the NVidia 340.x
driver series. Two days ago with driver 340.107 and the latest released
system updates, the lockscreen wallpaper corrupted for about 2 seconds
on resume from suspend, then the wallpaper reloaded, appearing fine. In
the past, the lockscreen wallpaper would remain corrupted for at least a
minute (presumably indefinitely, but I didn't wait to find out).

This issue might be somehow fixed, but I'll keep a look out to see if it
happens again and stays corrupted for longer than a minute.

[Bug 1773859] Re: upgrades to 18.04 fail

2018-06-10 Thread Shane Synan
Apologies for the double-comment.

Following the guide from here...
https://askubuntu.com/questions/838491/systemd-shim-error-after-upgrading-from-16-04-to-16-10/838673#838673

I was able to continue upgrading with these commands:

[let upgrader bail out and run dpkg configure]
sudo mv /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.freedesktop.systemd1.service
/usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.freedesktop.systemd1.service.bak
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt dist-upgrade
sudo apt autoremove

Then, to optionally finish cleaning up, check what packages are no longer
supported using the command from...
https://askubuntu.com/questions/691051/how-to-get-the-list-of-the-unsupported-packages-mentioned-during-the-os-upgrade

awk -F\' '/demoted/ {gsub(/ /,"\n",$2); print $2}' /var/log/dist-
upgrade/main.log

The system in question appears to work fine now, just the usual cleanup
of changes for any major OS upgrade.

Following up with my previous comment, this affects playing music or
videos in Totem, which is included in the default Ubuntu install. Even
if the player window is minimized, no notifications will display.
Someone unsuspecting might be led to think notifications are broken.

As before, if I should file a new bug, or any of the other options
mentioned in the last comment, I'd be happy to do so!

[Bug 1611552] [NEW] package linux-image-4.4.0-34-generic 4.4.0-34.53 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2016-08-09 Thread Shane Synan
Public bug reported:

This error occurred when installing the most recent round of updates.

Running 'sudo dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-
image-4.4.0-34-generic_4.4.0-34.53_amd64.deb' then 'sudo apt-get install
-f' seemed to fix the problem.

Perhaps the installation of the kernel was somehow interrupted? During
installation I opened the System76 driver, but nothing else happened, no
system crash, etc.

(As this was generated by Apport, I'm assuming the necessary debug
information is attached)

[Bug 1440825] Re: dnd_is_screensaver_inhibited no longer works

2016-07-12 Thread Shane Synan
Echoing @nobuto's remarks, this is a rather unpleasant surprise moving
from Ubuntu 14.04 to Ubuntu 16.04. I use Caffeine to keep the system
awake during important background tasks and when I can see the screen
while not actually at the keyboard. Unfortunately, now notifications
don't work in such cases.

As this is technically working according to design, should I file a bug
report with the Ayatana project, NotifyOSD, is one expected to change
org.gnome.desktop.session.idle-timeout in a script, or..?

Pardon the noise if I should have contacted elsewhere first.

[Bug 1421184] Re: Merge latest version (2.48.3-1) with Debian

2016-05-01 Thread Shane Synan
Tim Edwards, there's another way to work-around this that might be
easier. I should've added a comment on it.

For the command-line client ONLY: http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/unison
For both graphical and command-line client:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/unison-gtk
Make sure to download the right architecture from below, most likely 'amd64'
for 64-bit, or 'i386' for 32-bit.  You shouldn't need any of the dependencies;
Ubuntu 14.04 has new-enough versions.

If you have both packages installed (no need), you'll have to upgrade
both or remove the old 'unison' package as 'unison-gtk' seems to offer
the same program.

I've had success directly downloading the .deb packages for Unison
2.48.3-1 and installing them on my desktop and laptop running Ubuntu
14.04 with latest updates. Nothing seems to break, just a slight
sensible re-arrangement of the GUI buttons. This isn't the best idea,
but it's a viable work-around for now. A proper backport to trusty-
updates would be better.

[Bug 1421184] Re: Merge latest version (2.48.3-1) with Debian

2016-03-20 Thread Shane Synan
Would someone with the appropriate permissions mark this as affecting
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, too? The original bug report remarked on trying to
use newer Unison clients with older Ubuntu servers, and in my case, I
have the reverse issue - old clients, new server.

For ease of transition as users upgrade their desktops and servers at
different times, Unison in 14.04 could be upgraded to 2.48.3-1 with the
old package available as 'unison-2.40', akin to the current setup for
'unison2.32.52': http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/unison2.32.52

Or, for least disruption to 14.04-only systems where server might not be
managed by those with the clients, the opposite would also work, albeit
perhaps less ideal - packaging 2.48.3-1 as 'unison2.48.3', leaving
'unison' untouched.

[Bug 1421184] Re: Merge latest version (2.48.3-1) with Debian

2016-02-25 Thread Shane Synan
Merging/backporting Unison 2.48 to Ubuntu 16.04/14.04 might be required
to avoid the issue where newer builds of Unison 2.40 segfault due to a
change in the OCaml library (version 4.01.0 -> 4.02.3).

See Ubuntu bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unison/+bug/1543374
And Debian bug: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=807019
(thanks to ~linuxien_ref for linking to this on the Ubuntu bug report)

I have 14.04 clients and a 16.04 server and I will be happy to do any
needed testing.

sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get install python3-pip python3-virtualenv virtualenv # (Optionally,

[Bug 1491555] Re: Unity unnecessarily goes to low graphics mode

2016-02-15 Thread Shane Synan
This will cause issues for upgraded Ubuntu installs on Radeon hardware
with the upcoming release of 14.04.4 LTS. The version string now

Seconding Sinclair Yeh's request, should this be backported here, or

[Bug 1543374] Re: [regression] Unison segfault when transferring data, "input_value: bad bigarray kind"

2016-02-15 Thread Shane Synan
There's a bug report for getting Unison 2.48.3-1 into Ubuntu 16.04 and
backporting it to Ubuntu 14.04:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unison/+bug/1421184

According to the bug report linked by linuxien_ref above, Debian seems
to be taking this approach and hopefully Ubuntu can as well, either
before Import Freeze (Feb. 18th) or as a Stable Release Update.
Otherwise, Unison may need reverted for the current version in Ubuntu
16.04 is mostly unusable.

[Bug 1543374] [NEW] [regression] Unison segfault when transferring data, "input_value: bad bigarray kind"

2016-02-08 Thread Shane Synan
Public bug reported:

After installing the latest round of updates to Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial,
Unison segfaults when synchronizing some files across SSH.

Steps
1. Install unison on a local machine running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and a remote
device running Ubuntu 16.04 and unison_2.40.102-2ubuntu2.
2. Synchronize certain types of files. In my case, the Rhythmbox database and
1 GB+ .tar.gz archives both caused issues.

What happens
Unison aborts on the server side while the client displays: Uncaught exception
Failure("input_value: bad bigarray kind").

What should happen
Files are synchronized as usual.

Reverting to the previous version unison_2.40.102-2ubuntu1 from Wily and
below works around the issue. As Unison was rebuilt without changes (
http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/universe/u/unison/unison_2.40.102-2ubuntu2/changelog
), I don't know if a third-party library may have changed instead.

I attempted to capture the report using "apport-bug unison"; if I'm
missing information let me know! I can almost always reproduce this
issue.

[Bug 1267059] Re: "Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-Unused-Dependencies" does not work

2015-12-06 Thread Shane Synan
@Steve Brorens: It's actually the little "Tags" section under the bug
description and right before the comments that needs edited. Remove
'verification-needed' and add 'verification-done', and that should be
it!

If you can, you may want to change "Confirmed" back to "Fix Committed" -
that's for confirming the bug exists, not for confirming that a proposed
package fixed it. "Fix Committed" means the fix is developed, but
hasn't yet passed testing.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure about how to mark this as also affecting
Precise.

[Bug 1073488] Re: window management - if a window is always on top, it will always get focus after switching between workspaces

2015-11-06 Thread Shane Synan
I often have a calculator or a simple note-pad window always on top for
quick reference while I'm typing into a document below it. Switching
workspaces means I have to give focus back to the document every time.
I agree with ~amirmasoud that this is a bug, not a feature.

If there's any way I may help with debugging (such as running a test
build), let me know!

[Bug 1391111] Re: package debhelper 9.20131227ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: package is in a very bad inconsistent state; you should reinstall it before attempting configuration

2015-05-03 Thread Shane Synan
This happened after I tried to use the Printers tool (system-config-
printers) to automatically install an Epson printer driver. It added
the Epson repository, started to install epson-inkjet-printer-201211w,
then hung for several minutes. After a reboot, I found out that
debhelper was improperly installed.

To work-around the broken package, I used 'sudo apt-get install
--reinstall debhelper' followed by 'sudo apt-get remove debhelper'.

[Bug 1295925] Re: Rhythmbox displays the wrong album art

2014-08-20 Thread Shane Synan
I can confirm this happens quite often to me, on both desktop and laptop
14.04 installs. As suggested in #3, clearing the cached album art
folder fixes it, then in a short period of time it degrades into a mess
for FLAC and MP3 files.

While I have not tested this solution, the bug might be related to the
problem mentioned here (random album art):
https://askubuntu.com/a/454692/3406

I'm willing to help with any sort of testing needed.

[Bug 1239218] Re: [regression] Rhythmbox crashes with segfault when playing next track

2013-10-29 Thread Shane Synan
I also can confirm that Dac Chartrand's work-around.. works :) I've
updated the bug description to reflect this; if any developer needs
specific tests, I'd be willing to help in debugging.

** Description changed:

  How to reproduce:
- Start Rhythmbox, make sure you have at least two songs available
+ Start Rhythmbox, make sure you have at least two songs available and have
the Zeitgeist plugin enabled
Begin playback on a track, wait for it to finish (you can skip to near the
end of the track if you're impatient)

  Expected:
The next track plays, Rhythmbox doesn't crash.

  What happens:
Rhythmbox reliably crashes whenever changing tracks.
+
+ Workaround:
+ Disable the Zeitgeist in the 'Rhythmbox-Plugins' menu. Thanks to Dac
Chartrand (below) for discovering this!

  Other notes:
I started playing from the Music view, viewing all artists and albums.
Shuffle was enabled, repeat was disabled. I also edited PulseAudio's
configuration to stream audio to my netbook, which is on the local LAN, running
PulseAudio as a standard user.

  /etc/pulse/client.conf
  # Connect to the local music laptop
  default-server = dj-foxee

All other media players on my computer have no issue with the media
streaming (Totem, mplayer, GNOME-Sushi, Firefox, Adobe Flash). This
only started happening after upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10 dev from 13.04.

[Bug 1168685] Re: Encrypt option doesn't work in raring

2013-04-26 Thread Shane Synan
I can confirm this issue with 'seahorse-nautilus' version
3.7.5-0ubuntu1. When encrypting multiple files, it even creates the
archive, but doesn't actually save a .pgp file. Decryption fails
without warning as well. Note, however, that using 'gpg --encrypt file'
and 'gpg file' to encrypt and decrypt works as expected, even prompting
for my passphrase with the standard GTK keyring dialog.

'.xsession-errors' contains the following line immediately after I correctly
type the passphrase for my PGP key:
(seahorse-tool:18139): GLib-WARNING **: GChildWatchSource: Exit status of a
child process was requested but ECHILD was received by waitpid(). Most likely
the process is ignoring SIGCHLD, or some other thread is invoking waitpid()
with a nonpositive first argument; either behavior can break applications that
use g_child_watch_add()/g_spawn_sync() either directly or indirectly.

[Bug 1017011] [NEW] Quirk for 2-button mouse Ubuntu Mouse (Pokket Mouse)

2012-06-23 Thread Shane Synan
Public bug reported:

The official Ubuntu Mouse sold through the Canonical Store

it. After following the directions for X Quirks on the Ubuntu Wiki
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks#A2-button_Mice), middle-click by
pressing the left and right buttons works as expected.

[Bug 967294] Re: Unity panel shadow should not draw over unfocussed windows

2012-04-29 Thread Shane Synan
This bug is particularly bad when showing a LibreOffice presentation on
two screens in extended mode. The Unity panel shadow obscures the top
of the presentation, which looks really ugly. See the attached
screenshot for an example.

I doubt this is intentional, so I'm changing the status from Opinion;
apologies if this is incorrect.

[Bug 858378] Re: Unity panel shadow is faked by drawing it on the desktop background

2012-04-29 Thread Shane Synan
(Originally posted on the wrong bug (#967294); apologies if I shouldn't
have re-posted it here)

When showing a LibreOffice presentation on two screens in extended mode,
the Unity panel shadow obscures the top of the presentation, which looks
really ugly. I'm assuming this is caused by how Unity fakes the panel
shadow. (note that setting the presentation window to Always on top in
Slideshow settings does *not* fix the problem)

Are there any other workarounds beyond removing the panel shadow
completely as per
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/967294/comments/4 ?

[Bug 975600] [NEW] Printing to a network printer broken - /usr/lib/cups/backend/lpd failed

2012-04-06 Thread Shane Synan
Public bug reported:

What happens:
When I try printing to a USB printer shared over the network through my
Linkstation Live NAS, the document is paused even though the printer is turned
on and working.

What should happen:
The document successfully prints.

Steps to reproduce:
* Add a network printer (in my case the device URI is lpd://192.168.1.150/lp)
* Send a document to the printer

Results
* The document will get stuck in queue with a status of Held. Clicking the
Release selected jobs button will result in the document getting paused again.
* Roughly six minutes later a notification bubble will appear stating that the
printer is not connected, even though it is turned on.

Additional notes:
I updated CUPS today to the current version through the update manager, after
which printing no longer worked. I did not change any settings, and restarting
CUPS did not fix the problem. My laptop can still print to the same printer
with the same settings as I have yet to upgrade cups or any related packages on
it; I can check the cups version on it if it would help.

Apologies for the bug spam, but with further research, I found out none
of the computers in my network could print, so I don't think it's
Ubuntu's fault. I'm marking this bug as invalid; if it ends up actually
being a bug in CUPS, I'll re-open it.

[Bug 500073] Re: [Lucid] Brasero cannot create dvd video or create image

2011-11-21 Thread Shane Synan
This bug bit me on a fully updated Ubuntu 10.04 system when trying to
copy a CD, failing with the exact same error message. However, I found
a fix.

According to http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9754437postcount=3,
I installed the package icedax and it worked without even having to
reboot.

From a terminal:
sudo apt-get install icedax

Should the dependencies of Brasero be updated to include this package?

[Bug 604212] Re: infobox does not show

2011-10-30 Thread Shane Synan
This bug still affects me on Ubuntu 11.04 64bit, fully updated as of today.
I'll test it soon on my 11.10 laptop. To work around it, I've been using
dialog instead of whiptail, e.g.
dialog --title Testing Info Box --infobox This content will remain on-screen
even after the sleep ends. 9 60 ; sleep 2
But when using whiptail, the same issue as described above happens:
whiptail --title Testing Info Box --infobox You will never see this text. 9
60 ; sleep 2

[Bug 856138] Re: window decoration fails to respond

2011-10-18 Thread Shane Synan
Happening here too, running Oneiric final with latest updates. I've got
the System76 Pangolin Performance (revision 7) with an ATI Mobility
Radeon HD 4500 Series graphics card. The window decorations freeze in
an either active or inactive state, not updating the title bar text and
creating a confusing experience as several windows appear to have focus
all at once. This consistently happens with nearly every single window
I open; however, maximizing and restoring the window fixes it. If
there's any information I can provide to help fix this problem, please
let me know.
