[Bug 708493] Re: Can't login anymore: Read from socket failed: Connection reset by peer

2013-04-08 Thread Steve Brown
Howdy,

I know that in my case, this was definitely an MTU problem, and it
exhibits exactly the behavior stated above.

to test this, call
ping -M do -s 1500 host
If it goes through, this is probably not your issue. If it does not, try
lowering the -s value until it does go through. If the value that you find is
lower than the MTU on your interface, this is likely the problem.

The solution would be to change your MTU size on the interface. You can check
this with
ifconfig
and set it with
sudo ifconfig interface mtu 1000

[Bug 710678] Re: gnome-panel crashed with SIGSEGV in _panel_applet_frame_update_flags()

2011-04-04 Thread Steve Brown
Same here. Happens for me upon upgrade to natty. My user-defined
session apparently has applets that natty upgrade broke -- the problem
resolves if I use the fresh ubuntu classic session (how can I isolate
which?). We should look into this regression (users will log in and be
presented with blank screen - panic!)

(gdb) p frame-priv.panel
$1 = (PanelWidget *) 0x0
(gdb) p frame-priv.applet_info
$2 = (AppletInfo *) 0x0
(gdb) p frame-priv.iid

[Bug 392204] Re: Huge CPU usage by mount.ntfs process

2010-10-21 Thread Steve Brown
The Tuxera FAQ says one cause of this problem is writing to sparse files
and/or fragmented volumes.

From the upstream changelog, this has recently been fixed:

STABLE Version 2010.8.8 (August 8, 2010)
* Fixed partially overwriting sparse clusters on highly fragmented volumes.

You might try installing a more recent upstream NTFS-3g version
(2010.8.8 or 2010.10.2) and see if that helps.

Unofficial Ubuntu packages for 2010.8.8 can be found at:
https://launchpad.net/~x3lectric/+archive/team-iquik-releases/+packages

I hope we can soon get the latest version into the official Ubuntu
channels.

[Bug 403408] Re: Grub 2 problem, error: no such device

2010-03-05 Thread Steve brown
Replaced the 60GB HD drive on an old gateway laptop, then installed 9.10 full
disk. Got this error. By deleting the search line in the grub (as explained
above) I was able to boot. I considered upgrading the BIOS, but since I don't
have windows on this machine it seemed t0o complicated for my simple brain.
I booted on a gparted cd, shrunk the root to about 120GB, then created
another partition to fill the unallocated area.
When I rebooted everything worked fine. I still have access to the whole drive,
but the new partition has to be mounted to use. no big deal. My mom, who is
getting this computer, will never fill the first partition anyway

[Bug 215863] [NEW] zgrep ignores -h grep option

2008-04-11 Thread Steve Brown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gzip

Found this bug while trying to figure out why fwanalog did not work. It
relies on sed parsing of zegrep -h ( = --no-filenames) output of gzipped
logfiles. zegrep passes args to zgrep, which ignores the -h option.

Found the bug in Gutsy, verified also in most recent Hardy version,
gzip_1.3.12-3.2

Patch for the fix attached.

I also submitted the bug to [EMAIL PROTECTED], but haven't seen any
response.

Thanks,
Steve Brown

[Bug 199524] [NEW] evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in imap_body_decode()

2008-03-07 Thread Steve Brown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Ubuntu 7.10, source package evolution-data-server 1.12.1-0ubuntu2 in
camel-imap-utils.c, libcamel1.2-10: 1.12.1-0ubuntu2 .

Evolution crashes upon downloading an IMAP message, with an attachment, from
Gmail.
I manually downloaded the message and put it in the mailbox file; Evolution
displays the message fine. I can provide the message if needed.

I think the problem is in the IMAP conversation with the Gmail server.
I tried to grab the conversation with Wireshark, but Gmail requires SSL and I
don't know how to dump the stream otherwise. I'd be happy to dump it if you
can instruct me. Any hints?

[Bug 109108] Network Manager VPN Connection blanks /etc/resolv.conf

2007-04-22 Thread Steve Brown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Configure a PPTP VPN Connection in Network Manager.

Choose the option Use-Peer-DNS under PPP Options tab.

Make connection to VPN server.

cat /etc/resolv.conf and notice that peer's DNS is set correctly as the
nameserver entry.

Terminate VPN connection

Reconfigure VPN Connection and remove tick from Use Peer DNS option
under PPP tab

Reconnect VPN.

/etc/resolv.conf is now completely blank (except for a # generated by
NetworkManager, do not edit! line), rendering name resolution inactive
and generally stuffing anything you might want to do on the net!

Worked correctly under Edgy - not working correctly on Feisty.

[Bug 109109] PPTP unable to connect to Cisco 3000 VPN Concentrator

2007-04-22 Thread Steve Brown
Public bug reported:

I've been trying to connect to a Cisco VPN Concentrator using PPTP
(IPSEC is switched off on this particular beast so I cannot use vpnc)
but the connection is always dropped immediately.

The logs on the Cisco show 'Invalid length control message' and then it
turfs me off.

I believe the Windows VPN client suffered this same issue at one point
and Microsoft released a patch for it...

I found nothing of use on Google and realise this isn't strictly an
Ubuntu issue but Ubuntu is the distro I use and it's the one I'd like it
to be fixed in :-)

This occurred on both Edgy and Feisty - but I'm not sure which package
the fault would actually be in...
