Same problem for me on Ubuntu 20.04.1 with kernel linux-image-5.4.0-54-generic.
I will try to
swapoff -a for now to see if it mitigate the problem. I gave the VM 2 more
gigabytes of RAM
to reduce the need for swapping.

On Ubuntu 14.10, compiz 1:0.9.12+14.10.20140918-0ubuntu1, I just tested
a couple of times to let the screen saver turn off the screen and I can
show the lock screen again.
The bug seems resolved in this version.

Bugs,
This morning I got the same blank screen problem with the fglrx driver.
By switching with CTRL-ALT-F1 I was able to get a console where I saw
parts of characters of the login text on the screen, indented by 80% to
the left (similar to the radeon driver).
After rebooting, everthing was fine again.
Installing fglrx package with the proprietary AMD driver and rebooting
seems to solve the problem.
I tried to set the timer to 1 minute and let the screensaver start and
press a key a couple of minutes later and it correctly display again.
I dpkg --purge fglrx fglrx-amdcccle, rebooted and the
I tried to upgrade my BIOS to the latest version from the ASUS website.
The problem stays the same with the radeon driver.

I installed the version 1:0.9.9~daily13.06.19-13.04-0ubuntu1 from
raring-proposed and rebooted.
It seems to work like the prior daily version I installed (see #68). The
virtual desktops seems to work correctly. The ALT-TAB still freezes from
time to time.

I am not sure about the ALT-TAB if it is related or not. The problems I
had with the old version was a combination of freezes when changing
workspaces AND doing ALT-TAB. Now the workspace switching works fine but
the ALT-TAB is still buggy. The showing and disappearing of the
applications logos
I have installed the daily packages for Raring (version
1:0.9.9~daily13.06.11~13.04) and put back my Radeon in my desktop.
It is really more stable than the default raring version. No freezing
when I change virtual desktops. But I still have ALT-TAB freezes from
time to time, for 2-6 seconds,
I removed my Radeon card from my desktop and used the integrated Intel
instead. I was able to use it flawlessly in 1920x1200 all the afternoon.
So even if it does not crash on me, the r600 driver does hang and make
it difficult to use with Compiz+Unity.
I will try my Radeon again when the update
I am not sure if my problem is related because I don't crash with
compiz/unity but the ALT-TAB and virtual desktop switching is buggy. The
ALT-TAB content appear slowly or the desktop switcher does not disapear
and I cannot click any application. Sometimes it hang for 5-8 seconds.

Ok I:
# cd /etc/fonts/conf.d
# rm 10-hinting-medium.conf
# ln -s ../conf.avail/10-hinting-full.conf 10-hinting-full.conf

and it worked!
Maybe I did something wrong the first time.
Thanks a lot for your help.

Font height is not the same as in other applications
Personally, I don't have the 10-hinting-slight.conf in
/etc/fonts/conf.d. I only have:
/etc/fonts/conf.d$ ls -l *hint*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 2008-10-19 09:49 10-hinting.conf -
../conf.avail/10-hinting.conf

I joined a screenshot of gedit and gnome-terminal, both using the
