I have the same problem.
After some testing I think that mysql_upgrade is stopping the service and
trying to connect to it.
tango@sn-c-c46:~$ sudo systemctl status mysql
● mysql.service - MySQL Community Server
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/mysql.service; enabled; vendor preset
I have no more time to try. Not without pain, I'll migrate my emails to
Outlook. I hope, someday, I may find a solution to this problem and move
back to Evolution.

I forgot to say that it was working fine and, during a network downtime, it
started to fail. The network went back but evolution didn't. It continues
crashing with SIGSEV.
I tried removing every package and deleting every user data. If I install
evolution-mapi package, it dies when configuring
Also I run evolution under gdb using another user account with a clean
evolution config.
Please see attached file for gdb messages and backtrace.
** Attachment added: gdb evolution showing backtraces after SIGSEV on
evolution-mapi

Ubuntu LTS 10.04.4.
Redmine broken as described.
I was able to return to production after this:
# apt-get install ruby1.8=1.8.7.249-2 libruby1.8=1.8.7.249-2 irb1.8=1.8.7.249-2

I can confirm this bug. My upgrade hung while trying to stop mysqld, and
didn't continue until I manually killed the mysqld processes.
It's now hanging on the mysqld shutdown while trying to upgrade from
v5.0.22-0ubuntu6.06 to v5.0.24a9.

I can reproduce this on my Thinkpad T60p. It started when I upgraded to
the .25 kernel. The boot delay is now about 4 minutes.
