[Bug 1926081] Re: nr_writeback memory leak in kernel 4.15.0-137+
So, good news. I pulled in the ubuntu kernel sources and applied the main patch I had previously identified (https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/c3cc39118c3610eb6ab4711bc624af7fc48a35fe). Looking at the other patch (https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/e27be240df53), that seems to be related to the accuracy of returned statistics which is not something that my testcase is going to show up. I built a version of the 4.15.0-142 kernel with patch, and booted back into it, and with two iterations of my testcase my `nr_writeback` value has ended up on zero - which is excellent news. From previous runs it has never failed to leak, so this looks good to me. I will run it some more, but it is safe to say I am pretty happy at this point. To that end, I believe that https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/c3cc39118c3610eb6ab4711bc624af7fc48a35fe "mm: memcontrol: fix NR_WRITEBACK leak in memcg and system stats" does indeed fix this issue and the symptoms I have reported above. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1926081 Title: nr_writeback memory leak in kernel 4.15.0-137+ To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1926081/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1926081] Re: nr_writeback memory leak in kernel 4.15.0-137+
Guilherme, thank you for your kind words :) I have been trying to reproduce this bug on several other systems that I have access to in our cloud account, but I have been unable to reproduce it on a VM (either with SAN or local SSD storage). The main set of servers where this has been seen by us are bare-metal servers with a RAID card backed by SSDs - it's possible that a combination of the resources available on the machine (CPU, RAM, disk IO) cause this bug to be more reproducible with my basic testcase. I have taken a server out of production and rebooted it into the 4.15 kernel (4.15.0-141-generic) where the issue is able to be seen. I confirmed my testcase still reproduces the issue here, and it does - nr_writeback is currently stuck at 2641 after one iteration. I have supplied the apport collected information from that server, which is now attached to this issue. This is my first bug report on Launchpad, so I am as yet unfamiliar with the process of testing the potential patches I need. Are you suggesting that I follow the process to rebuild the kernel (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel) including the patches you have mentioned? Assuming that is the correct course of action I'll attempt to follow the instructions and do that, and report back.

[Bug 1926081] Re: nr_writeback memory leak in kernel 4.15.0-137+
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Ubuntu 18.04.5 4.15.0 LTS kernels at version 4.15.0-137 and above contain a memory leak due to the inclusion of patch from the upstream kernel, but not the fix for that patch which was released later. This issue manifests itself as an increasing amount of memory used by the writeback queue, which never returns to zero. This can been seen either as the value of `nr_writeback` in /proc/vmstat, or the value of `Writeback` in /proc/meminfo. Ordinarily these values should be at or around zero, but on our servers we observe the `nr_writeback` value increasing to over 8 million, (32GB of memory), at which point it isn't long before the system IO slows to a crawl (tens of Kb/s). Our servers have 256GB of memory, and are performing many CI related activities - this issue appears to be related to concurrent writing to disk, and can be demonstrated with a simple testcase (see later). On our heavily used systems this memory leak can result in an unstable server after 2-3 days, requiring a reboot to fix it. After much investigation the issue appears to be because the patch "mm: memcontrol: fix excessive complexity in memory.stat reporting" was brought in to the 4.15.0-137 Ubuntu kernel (see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/4.15.0-137.141) as part of " Bionic update: upstream stable patchset 2021-01-25 (LP: #1913214)", however in the mainline kernel there was a follow up patch because this initial patch introduced concurrency issues. The patch "mm: memcontrol: fix NR_WRITEBACK leak in memcg and system stats" is required, and should be brought into the Ubuntu packaged kernel to fix the issues reported. The required patch is here: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/c3cc39118c3610eb6ab4711bc624af7fc48a35fe and was committed a few weeks after the original (broken) patch: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/a983b5ebee57209c99f68c8327072f25e0e6e3da I have checked the release notes for Ubuntu versions -137 to -143, and none include this second patch that should fix the issue. (I checked https://people.canonical.com/~kernel/info/kernel-version-map.html for all the kernel versions, and then visited each changelog page in turn, e.g. https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/4.15.0-143.147 looking for "mm: memcontrol: fix NR_WRITEBACK leak in memcg and system stats"). We do not observe this on the 5.4.0 kernel (supported HWE kernel on 18.05.5), which includes this second patch. That kernel may also include other patches, so we do not know if any other fixes are also required, but the one we have linked above seems to definitely be needed, and seems to match our symptoms. Testcase: The following is enough to permanently increase the value of `nr_writeback` on our systems (by about 2000 during most executions): ``` date grep nr_writeback /proc/vmstat mkdir -p /docker/testfiles/{1..5} seq -w 1 10 | xargs -n1 -I% sh -c 'dd if=/dev/urandom of=/docker/testfiles/1/file.% bs=4k count=10 status=none' & seq -w 1 10 | xargs -n1 -I% sh -c 'dd if=/dev/urandom of=/docker/testfiles/2/file.% bs=4k count=10 status=none' & seq -w 1 10 | xargs -n1 -I% sh -c 'dd if=/dev/urandom of=/docker/testfiles/3/file.% bs=4k count=10 status=none' & seq -w 1 10 | xargs -n1 -I% sh -c 'dd if=/dev/urandom of=/docker/testfiles/4/file.% bs=4k count=10 status=none' & seq -w 1 10 | xargs -n1 -I% sh -c 'dd if=/dev/urandom of=/docker/testfiles/5/file.% bs=4k count=10 status=none' & wait $(jobs -p) grep nr_writeback /proc/vmstat date ``` Subsequent iterations of the test raise it further, and on a system doing a lot of writing from a lot of different processes, it can rise quickly. [Bug 1926081] Re: nr_writeback memory leak in kernel 4.15.0-137+
I did not initially run the `apport-collect` command as the servers on which I observed this bug have been upgraded to use the 5.4.0 kernel to mitigate the issue (as mentioned in the initial report), therefore the kernel related information may be misleading. I will endeavour to find a server that is exhibiting this issue that remains on an impacted kernel, however I cannot do so today, and given that I have identified a required upstream patch I believe some progress can be made with this bug without this information. If an `apport-collect` command on a server that has been upgraded to the newer kernel is still useful, please let me know and I can see if I can generate the information there. I will attempt to find a server that has not been upgraded, replicate the issue, and then will upload the required logs from that server. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1926081 Title: nr_writeback memory leak in kernel 4.15.0-137+ To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1926081/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

System details: lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS Release:18.04 Affected kernel: 4.15.0-137 onwards (current latest version tried was 4.15.0-142) e.g. apt-cache policy linux-image-4.15.0-141-generic linux-image-4.15.0-141-generic: Installed: 4.15.0-141.145 Candidate: 4.15.0-141.145 Version table: *** 4.15.0-141.145 500 500 http://mirrors.service.networklayer.com/ubuntu bionic-updates/main amd64 Packages 500 http://mirrors.service.networklayer.com/ubuntu bionic-security/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies I should include additional information from the server, but at this stage we have upgraded all our affected systems to 5.4.0, and therefore the kernel versions do not match those with this issue. We likely have other servers used in other services that are not as heavily loaded that have not been as affected by this issue - and therefore and I may be able to get the equivalent diagnostics from there after confirming that they demonstrate the same issue with my testcase Workaround: After several weeks narrowing this down, our only option was to upgrade our servers to the 5.4 kernel, which is included as the HWE kernel in 18.04.5: apt update && apt install

I have since switched to NixOS, and I have tested every major version from 19.03 to 21.03pre260232.733e537a8ad (Okapi), the latter of which uses kernel 5.4.85, and I see this same wifi firmware crashing issue on all of those versions, so this is not an issue specific to Ubuntu. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1908106 Title: The ath10k_pci driver crashes all the time now To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1908106/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1908153] Re: [Alienware 15 R4, Realtek ALC3266, Black Headphone Out or internal speakers] Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound
I can't recall and have since switched to NixOS 21.03pre260232.733e537a8ad (Okapi), where I do not experience the sound issue on kernel version 5.4.85. However, the wifi driver on Ubuntu that started showing extremely severe instability at roughly the same time as this sound underrun issue hit (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1908106) is very much still a problem on that version of NixOS (kernel 5.4.85), as well as every regression I tested it on, including every major version from 19.03 to 21.03. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1908153 Title: [Alienware 15 R4, Realtek ALC3266, Black Headphone Out or internal speakers] Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1908153/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1908106] [NEW] The ath10k_pci driver crashes all the time now
Public bug reported: The ath10k_pci driver is crashing constantly now. It started happening a few months ago, but with the most recent Ubuntu update to the 5.4.0-58 kernel, it's so bad that I can't use it reliably for very long at all. It doesn't seem to fail from any particular kind of load on the network stack. Just seems to be random. I've attached the syslog with some context around the errors, separated by "sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager" attempts as well as a reboot or two. I didn't have an efi partition setup. I've got a legacy BIOS (9 years old), and my previous partition layout with a fresh install of 20.04 was just /, /home and swap, where originally I just went to reformat / I went through the installer again and created a 200Mb efi partition and all was fine. Further to this. A reboot of the system first took me to rescue mode. [Bug 1904552] [NEW] Bash option "--rcfile" doesn't prevent /etc/bash.bashrc from being executed when launching an interactive shell
Public bug reported: Release: Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS Bash version: GNU bash, version 5.0.17(1)-release (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu) >From Bash's manual page, this should be the behaviour of the --rcfile option. << Execute commands from file instead of the system wide initialization file /etc/bash.bashrc and the standard personal initialization file ~/.bashrc if the shell is interactive (see INVOCATION below). >> However, that is not the case in practice. Let's consider a short script named "test.sh", which is made up of only one line: echo "Just testing" When I open a terminal on my Ubuntu 20.04 machine, and type in the command "bash --rcfile test.sh", I expect my file test.sh to be run instead of /etc/bash.bashrc and ~/.bashrc. However, though my file is run successfully, /etc/bash.bashrc is still run, and is even run before my script. I don't get why (it contradicts the manual page). I noticed that because I introduced an echo command in both /etc/bash.bashrc and ~/.bashrc to monitor their executions. Upon googling, I noticed I wasn't the first who had such an issue, but no solution was proposed (see the first comment on the accepted answer on this post: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/187369/when-is- etc-bash-bashrc-invoked). Finally, it was advised to file a bug. Hope I clearly described the issue. P.S. [Bug 1852608] [NEW] ZFS Severe Performance issue due to poorly supported feature
Public bug reported: I installed ZFS using the 19.10 installer and ran into some severe load caused by /etc/zfs/zed.d/history_event-zfs-list-cacher.sh Microk8s, due to the way containerd manages container filesystems, causes numerous zevents and can easily overwhelm the above script. I filed a ticket and partial fix to ZOL team, however in response Richard Elling recommended not using that feature. * "it is not core to zfs operation, it is an attempt at optimization that few people know about, and even fewer use" * "zed is allowed to drop events under load, so it might not be called and therefore the cache cannot be authoritative" https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/issues/9584 I'm providing this feedback to you so you can make changes to the Ubuntu installer to not enable this zfs feature. [Bug 1726124] Re: DNS domain search paths not updated when VPN started
My guess is that rls-bb-notfixing means this is not getting fixed in Bionic Beaver 18.04. Really hoping a fix can make it into the 20.04 LTS release though. I agree with Paul - systemd-resolve is not doing what it promises to do. >From systemd.network(5): Both "search" and "routing-only" domains are used for routing of DNS queries: look-ups for host names ending in those domains (hence also single label names, if any "search domains" are listed), are routed to the DNS servers configured for this interface. The domain routing logic is particularly useful on multi-homed hosts with DNS servers serving particular private DNS zones on each interface. The "routing-only" domain "~." (the tilde indicating definition of a routing domain, the dot referring to the DNS root domain which is the implied suffix of all valid DNS names) has special effect. It causes all DNS traffic which does not match another configured domain routing entry to be routed to DNS servers specified for this interface. This setting is useful to prefer a certain set of DNS servers if a link on which they are connected is available. This setting is read by systemd-resolved.service(8). "Search domains" correspond to the domain and search entries in resolv.conf(5). Domain name routing has no equivalent in the traditional glibc API, which has no concept of domain name servers limited to a specific link. One partial workaround is to remove `[!UNAVAIL=return]` after `resolve` in /etc/nsswitch.conf: hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] resolve dns myhostname That way a traditional DNS resolution is done after systemd-resolve fails. This works for everything I've tested so far _except_ Google Chrome. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1726124 Title: DNS domain search paths not updated when VPN started To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1726124/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1300004] Re: gedit does not elevate privileges while it's being launched
Old version of gedit that installed by default in Ubuntu 18.04.3 clean install just done today allows saving a file or "save as" to any directory. Snap version of "Text Editor" which purports to be gedit version 3.32.0 can't save a file anywhere I've tried. The error is that I don't have permission even though I do have permission to Read AND Write files in the directories I've tried. Thinking that there may have been conflict, I uninstalled "old gedit" via sudo apt remove gedit, then uninstalled and reinstalled "New gedit" aka "Text Editor" from the Ubuntu Software app. No improvement. FWIW if it's supposed to be gedit call it gedit. Look at VLC for an example of old version and new snap version both listed and installable in the Ubuntu Software store. Choose the version you want. [Bug 1809976] [NEW] Libvirt wireshark dissector fails to dissect anything
Public bug reported: On a fresh xubuntu install of 18.04.1, the desktop edition, I installed wireshark and libvirt-wireshark, with all needed dependencies, from apt- get. I then tried to look at some libvirt-rpc traffic as a pcap in wireshark; it came up as regular TCP. Checking the list of loaded plugins, I found that the libvirt plugin(libvirt.so) wasn't loaded. Further investigation proved that the plugin installed to the wireshark 2.4.5 plugin directory and not 2.6(the version currently on the repos). Bug #1: probably should update the install directory to match the current wireshark version on the repos. I then tried just symlinking the plugin to the correct directory so that wireshark 2.6 would load it; that didn't work. Copying the file from the 2.4.5 directory to 2.6 also didn't work. Eventually I ended up apt-get removing the 2.6 install of wireshark and the dissector, building and installing 2.4.5 from source, then reinstalling the wireshark dissector with apt-get. This got the plugin to load properly, and I was able to confirmed that it loaded in the about->plugins menu in wireshark. But even then, it failed to dissect libvirt rpc traffic, and came in as regular TCP. I made sure all protocols were enabled, and with the plugin loaded, I didn't even see anything libvirt-rpc related in the supported protocols list. The build of wireshark was otherwise able to dissect pcaps with other kinds of traffic, so I doubt it was anything to do with my wireshark build. Bug #2: The dissector itself loads in 2.4.5, but is seemingly broken. I expected it to be able to dissect libvirt-rpc traffic, and it was not only unable to, but didn't even seem to load properly, as there was no evidence it added any capacity to dissect libvirt-rpc traffic in any of the supported protocol menus. I should note that I am unable to provide the libvirt-rpc traffic captures I am using to test this for, well, reasons. Sorry about that The pkg details for libvirt-wireshark: Installed: 4.0.0-1ubuntu8.5 Candidate: 4.0.0-1ubuntu8.5 Version table: *** 4.0.0-1ubuntu8.5 500 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-updates/universe amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 4.0.0-1ubuntu8.2 500 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-security/universe amd64 Packages 4.0.0-1ubuntu8 500 ** Affects: libvirt (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1809976 Title: Libvirt wireshark dissector fails to dissect anything To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libvirt/+bug/1809976/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1768010] Re: usbmount does not work on Bionic
Dan: It looks like it's working as expected. The first error can be ignored because it always does that. It first tries to mount /dev/sdb which always fails because it is not a partition. Next it tries to mount /dev/sdb1 which succeeds because it is a partition. I don't know why there is a 21 second delay. Your computer initially appears to have some problem correctly reading the capacity of the USB drive. It might be connected to the fact that it wasn't previously ejected properly. [Bug 1788459] [NEW] gssproxy in libselinux.so.1 on Ubuntu 18.04 when called by rpc.gssd
Public bug reported: I have apache configured to perform a kerberized NFS4 mount using rpc.gssd and gssproxy. If I request a web page that requires NFS4 access, then gssproxy crashes, reporting a segfault in libselinux.so.1 and the web request generates a 403 error. gssproxy[6267]: segfault at 0 ip 7f2f5bb1951a sp 7ffe861da150 error 4 in libselinux.so.1[7f2f5bb0d000+25000] If I run gssproxy at debug level = 3, and then load a web page, I can see the uid/principal request for www-data come in from rpc.gssd: # gssproxy -d --debug-level=3 -i -C /etc/gssproxy [2018/08/22 17:51:40]: Debug Enabled (level: 3) [2018/08/22 17:52:06]: Client [2018/08/22 17:52:06]: (/usr/sbin/rpc.gssd) [2018/08/22 17:52:06]: connected (fd = 10)[2018/08/22 17:52:06]: (pid = 4548) (uid = 33) (gid = 33)Segmentation fault (core dumped) Since gssproxy is required to initiate kerberos principals for any local application services - Ubuntu 18.04 does not currently support running application services with NFS4 kerberos dependencies.
