@Sparkhawk: I used the script mentioned in post #20 in the thread linked below. Unfortunely, it only reduced how often the problem occurs for me and doesn't completely eliminate it.

I am now convinced that the problem is related to unity in some way. I like unity, but gnome shell isn't a bad alternative at all. "sudo apt-get install gnome-shell" and selecting a gnome session on login is all you need. I can now use my notebook like it was intended to be used.
