[Bug 1888817] [NEW] openshot crashes while opening MP4 with bytewidth failed

2020-07-24 Thread ThiloPfennig
Public bug reported:

I use openshot on Linux Mint

$ cat /etc/debian_version
bullseye/sid

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Linux Mint 20
Release:20

$ apt policy openshot
openshot:
  Installed: 2.4.3+dfsg1-1
  Candidate: 2.4.3+dfsg1-1
  Version table:
 *** 2.4.3+dfsg1-1 500

Every time I try to add a file into a project Openshot crashes
immediately. It should somehow better handle the problem.

Here is some tracing output:

And now, btw. although I have set the standard fonts to free versions
OO.org always resets the preference to the non-free versions. This
sucks. This means I can not write texts with one font but it always
changes in the formats.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

If I reset the fonts to standard via the button at
Tools-Options-OO.org Writer-Basic Fonts I get Times New Roman instrad
of the more obvious free choice Liberation Sans and Liberation Serif. I
think this should be fixed to the latter.

[Bug 587246] Re: change standard fonts to free versions

2010-05-29 Thread ThiloPfennig
I do not understand the logic, that I only should want to use free font,
if I do not have non-free standard fonts installed? I install non-free
fonts for passive purposes - for reading documents written with those
fonts in mind. This does not relate in any way in my wish to only
produce documents with non-free fonts. Sure I only what to produce only
documents with free fonts - and thats what I expect to be natural for a
free software application and a Linux distribution. Free should always
be the default in Ubuntu. In my opinion.

[Bug 515972] [NEW] Ubuntu enforces use of closed source PDF reader via Firefox plugin

2010-02-02 Thread ThiloPfennig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acroread

My issue is, that I only recently added acroread to my installed
packages, becaue normally I do only use open source readers. I then had
to find out that I now do not only have acroread as an additional
option, but that I HAD to use it, because now all PDF documents in
Firefox open within Firefox via the acroread plugin.

This is not acceptable. no other PDF reader enforces that and I consider
this an intrusion into my open source environment. I therefore request
that this plugin is not installed by default any more!

[Bug 507458] [NEW] F-spot exports images to GIMP with wrong PPI

2010-01-14 Thread ThiloPfennig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

If I export from F-spot to a directory the PPI settings of the original
image (like 300 ppi) are preserved. Also when I open an image with GIMP
I get the original PPI.

* But when I open an image from F-Spot in GIMP, GIMP chooses the
settings for new images. So that for instance an 300 ppi images gets
reduced to 72 ppi!

This behaviour is dangerous for further editing process. The user will
assume that he is editing the original settings.

I don't know which programs fault it is as both can import and export
correctly when done differently.

This bug happens to me every time.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 343219] Re: Adding Fast User Switcher applet causes shut down options to disappear from System menu

2009-06-18 Thread ThiloPfennig
It does not make any sense to reopen the bug if the developers disagree.
I think the message was clear. The made a decision. If they render it
invalid we need to accept it, even if we disagree. We are free to use
another Linux. Maybe the decision is reconsidered at some point.
Personally I have disabled FUSA alltogether and now hesitate to
recommend Ubuntu. What I wish is that those design decisions are done
more carefully in the future.

[Bug 382084] [NEW] dsl settings get lost after saving

2009-05-31 Thread ThiloPfennig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-gnome

That's what I did:

1) Create a new DSL connection via nm-applet
2) Test connection. Worked!
3) Reboot computer

Result:
DSL setting is lost (the connection is not listed any more in the settings). I
could not recover. I also tried to reset by removing the gconf directory
.gconf/system/networking/ (where I could see the existings are saved). But
Nothing helped. I then chose to use the pppoeconf method which worked.

[Bug 343219] Re: Adding Fast User Switcher applet causes shut down options to disappear from System menu

2009-04-18 Thread ThiloPfennig
I think this will be a CLASSIC wrong decision. It reminds me on the
decision of GNOME to choose spatial browsing for nautilus some years
ago.

Thing is: Every big change in usability does mean people will have to
relearn stuff. So this should only be done if you have very good
reasons. Mostly this is the case if some stuff REALLY sucks.

the current design decision means that I can not use the FUSA any more.
Why? Because I am used to shutdown via system menu and do not plan to
change. Also if I add the FUSA also all administration settings are gone
and I still dont know where they are now.

So to make my points:

a) People dont like changes, unless they really make things only better
b) the design decisions renders the FUSA unusable for some people like me,
although I really loved it until recently
c) Some settings are on new locations which can not be find easily
d) Additionally I think the FUSA is now overloaded and also confusing. I now
read in german (and retranslated into english Logged off and Logg off.

I think that this feature went through indicates that the community
process in Ubuntu has serious flaws, as some major concerns were not
heard. This decision alone may justify for some a switch away from
Ubuntu. What I see is arrogance. Not that Ubuntu is the only project
that has developed such arrogance, but I like to point that out in the
hope that those things will not happen again.

the major problem I guess is that the way you did incorporate the new
feature is that adding an applet changes the system menu. That sounds
very elegant but is in fact not very logical. The clean way would have
been to introduce a forked FUSA as an option and to collect user
feedback.

Personally I too still habve the window chooser on the far right which I
could not live without. But some other guys already decided before you
that I dont need that.

[Bug 343219] Re: Adding Fast User Switcher applet causes shut down options to disappear from System menu

2009-04-18 Thread ThiloPfennig
I can understand the argument, but actually I do not think it is that
confusing. In the real world and on the computer there are always more
than one way to do things. The question is what is more confusing:
Having the possibility to do a thing in another way or not being able to
do a thing because you can not find it or at least having a hard time? I
know a lot of things I can do with Ubuntu where there are dozens of ways
to do it - that does not confuse me. Confusion comes if people do not
know what to do. I think people make some tasks a habbit and then stick
to it. So I guess many users did not even yet find the FUSA.

I think the current situation is a bit unfortunate. 9.04 is on the
doorsteps and the decision was made. Even of the decision was wrong it
is better to stick with it now. But maybe it is possible to get some
more user feedback on major interface changes. And please include
feedback of impaired users. If somebody who is perfectly healthy and
fully functional and smart likes a new solution that makes a new
solution only usable for such users - unless such features are approved
by those who already have more problems with computers (which are also
kids and or seniors).

Maybe the FUSA features can be tweaked, so that it wont be impossible
for some to use Ubuntu any more (which I fear will be the case).

[Bug 356083] [NEW] rhythmbox repeatedly searches for plugins

2009-04-06 Thread ThiloPfennig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

If I import a directory again, sometimes rhythmbox does find non-music
files or files which are differently coded. It then starts to search for
plugins for these files. So far so good. The problem is that if it does
not find a plugin it does not remember that. So it would search for it
10.000 times if it finds it 10.000 times. I recommend a memory of
searches. It may make sense to search again sometimes if a new
repository was added. OTOH it should recognize that files that are not
text are not opened with rhythmbox.

[Bug 237426] Re: xsane crashed with SIGSEGV in sane_avision_start()

2009-01-24 Thread ThiloPfennig
This seems to be a libsane problem.

On debbugs #474706 David Headland wrote on July 23rd 2008:

I've managed to grab a few minutes to test libsane 1.0.19-15 with my
ScanJet 5300c this evening, and can report that scanning now works fine
for me

Ubuntu Intrepid as of today still has libsane-1.0.19-6ubuntu1

Can we have an update of libsane to a higher version? Ubuntu unstable
does yet not have version 1.0.19.11: http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty
/libsane-extras

I have the same problems with a ScanJet 5370C.

I filed a new bug under Bug #320985

[Bug 258512] Re: epiphany crashes often on tab closing.

2009-01-20 Thread ThiloPfennig
Well no. Its funny that users are expected to try out Alpha software. I
know it often only makes sense to try out with latest changes - but to
suggest a user to use alpha software is just dangerous. If I would I
would get other problems and then the feedback why on earth I chose to
use alpha and that I then have to just live with it. I am primarily
using Firefox now. I think anybody running Epiphany and this alpha
release can take on this tests. I will not test alpha.

[Bug 228988] Re: Firefox can display a page with the wrong encoding

2008-09-05 Thread ThiloPfennig
I have another example where things do not work well:
http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=12368pq-locale=de_DECID=KOSBANNERLOC=290808_CRM_F1_M863

It contains this tag:
  meta http-equiv=Content-Type
content=text/html;charset=utf-8

But display is not set to UTF-8 but to ISO-8859-1 which is the opposit
of what described above. Essentially 80% of all german pages I visit I
broken since newer Firefox 3.0.x - not sure since which exact version.
Funny how few energy is invested if the most important application is
partly unusable for propably all users who do not have the primary
language as EN, EN_US or similar. I guess thisis because those users
dont have the problem, because 99% of the characters are the same in
those languages in ASCII or UTF-8.

Well sure thats the problem. You have to set it to WONTFIX really if you
think Ubuntu needs no vmware-server. Ubuntu decided to remove the
package because nobody updated or had the time to update. Thats ok as
its a fact - but the question is if we should wait or rather install it
manually. Is anybody working on this?

[Bug 228988] Re: Firefox can display a page with the wrong encoding

2008-08-26 Thread ThiloPfennig
Although Andre was spamming I have to agree with the basic message. What
Firefox is doing is that it uses UTF-8 as default for ANY web page,
which is false. As in Germany many pages use ISO-8859-1 and many HTML
pages do not specify an encoding. To start with the first example
mentioned in the bug report if I access the page:
http://atilf.atilf.fr/tlf.htm Firefox sets encoding to UTF-8.

I have read a bit more documents. The primary problem here is that too
many pages on the web do not declare a character set.

Secondly HTTP clearly defines that ISO-8859-1 is a falllback character
set: When no explicit charset parameter is provided by the sender,
media subtypes of the text type are defined to have a default charset
value of ISO-8859-1 when received via HTTP.
(http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2616#section-3.7.1 , RFC 2616 ). This
had been the default character set for ages. So one can assume that if
pages or servers do not send a character set, that they are old (HTML
2,3,...) where there was not even an alternative.

The application epiphany-gecko was killed unexpectedly. You computer

I would say a bug tool which requires a minimum RAM is quite unusable
because low RAM can be one potential cause - so I never can get to the
point tothe cause if the bug program can not analyze the situation.
