[Bug 1765923] Re: Nvidia driver leads to black screen on bionic 18.04 SDDM LightDM bug?

2018-04-27 Thread Thomas Friedrichsmeier
Same symptoms(*) here after a fresh upgrade to 18.04.

Tried installing gdm, as suggested above, and also adding "xrandr" as
suggested, here: https://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?316354
-SDDM-shows-black-screen-with-Nvidia . Neither made a difference for me.

However, the problem finally went away after switching to the nouveau
driver. (And I have no recollection of ever asking for the proprietary
nvidia driver, specifically, but I may be wrong about that.)

(*) Symptoms: sddm, but also lightdm and gdm3 showing only black. startx
brings up an xfce session without problems.

[Bug 886396] Re: crash after segfault in r

2011-11-05 Thread Thomas Friedrichsmeier
Hi,

rkward 0.5.4 is pretty old, already. Since then, a lot has happened. In
particular frontend and backend run in separate processes since rkward
0.5.5. This means that a segfault in the backend can be handled much
easier, now.

For this reason, I am fairly confident, that this bug has already been
fixed in later versions of RKWard, and I'm marking it as fixed.

Consider installing RKWard 0.5.7 from our PPA ( https://launchpad.net
/~rkward-devel/+archive/rkward-stable ). Should you be able to reproduce
this (or a similar problem) with rkward 0.5.7, please re-open the
report.

[Bug 432259] Re: rkward crashes on launch

2009-09-18 Thread Thomas Friedrichsmeier
RKWard in the official intrepid and jaunty archives is riddled with
bugs, unfortunately. I don't know, whether it is possible to get a
backport of the more recent releases into intrepid/jaunty archives, or
who would be able to do so.

Please try one of the .debs provided by Meik Michalke
(http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/rkward/index.php?title=Binaries_and_Build_Scripts#Unofficial_Ubuntu_repositories).
Building your own backport using the source package in karmic should
also work.

If you continue to see this problem with RKWard 0.5.1 or later, please
post back. Otherwise, I think it's safe to assume that this is just
another manifestation of the known and fixed breakages in RKWard-
jaunty/intrepid.

[Bug 185403] Re: [kde4] [needs-packaging] Package rkward KDE4 version (0.5.0a)

2008-05-05 Thread Thomas Friedrichsmeier
The current plan is to include 0.5.0b in Debian soonishly, after 0.4.9a
has entered testing (and maybe a short wait after that).

If you would like to go ahead in Ubuntu earlier, that's perfectly fine
with me. You really don't need to wait for my OK in any way.

In Debian, the package will likely still be called rkward (i.e. no
-kde4 in the name). The KDE3 and KDE4 versions are not designed to be
co-installable. KDE3 versions will be supported for some more time to
come (upstream), but all substantial new development will be limited to
the KDE4 version, and the KDE4 version is meant to fully supersede the
KDE3 version.

[Bug 186301] Re: Unneeded dependencies?

2008-05-02 Thread Thomas Friedrichsmeier
In Debian sid (i386), rkward 0.4.9a-1 has these dependencies (likely to
differ from ubuntu in a number of details):

depends
php4-cli | php5-cli, r-base-core (= 2.4.9), kdelibs4c2a (= 4:3.5.9), libacl1
(= 2.2.11-1), libart-2.0-2 (= 2.3.18), libattr1 (= 2.4.41-1), libaudio2,
libc6 (= 2.7-1), libfam0, libfontconfig1 (= 2.4.0), libfreetype6 (= 2.3.5),
libgcc1 (= 1:4.1.1-21), libice6 (= 1:1.0.0), libidn11 (= 0.5.18), libjpeg62,
libpcre3 (= 7.4), libpng12-0 (= 1.2.13-4), libqt3-mt (= 3:3.3.8b), libsm6,
libstdc++6 (= 4.1.1-21), libx11-6, libxcursor1 ( 1.1.2), libxext6, libxft2
( 2.1.1), libxi6, libxinerama1, libxrandr2 (= 2:1.2.0), libxrender1, libxt6,
zlib1g (= 1:1.1.4)

recommends
r-base-html

Of these, the following are probably unneeded, as they are not used directly:
libacl1 (= 2.2.11-1), libart-2.0-2 (= 2.3.18), libattr1 (= 2.4.41-1),
libaudio2, libfam0, libfontconfig1 (= 2.4.0), libfreetype6 (= 2.3.5), libice6
(= 1:1.0.0), libidn11 (= 0.5.18), libjpeg62, libpcre3 (= 7.4), libpng12-0
(= 1.2.13-4), libsm6, libxcursor1 ( 1.1.2), libxext6, libxft2 ( 2.1.1),
libxi6, libxinerama1, libxrandr2 (= 2:1.2.0), libxrender1, libxt6, zlib1g (=
1:1.1.4)

The following are actually used, but should be redundant (already required by
kdelibs4c2a):
libc6 (= 2.7-1), libgcc1 (= 1:4.1.1-21), libqt3-mt (= 3:3.3.8b), libx11-6,
libstdc++6 (= 4.1.1-21)

Those depends come in through dpgk-shlibdeps. dpkg-shlibdeps is not
really to blame, either, though (or only for the redundant depends). The
upstream build-system (autotools system with KDE specifics) insists on
linking a whole lot of libraries at link-time, which are not directly
used by rkward at all.

I have a strong feeling that this could be trimmed down considerably
(upstream, but that happens to be myself), but I just don't have enough
knowledge to do something about it.

Note that it's more of an aesthetical problem, since most (all?) of the
named dependencies will be pulled in by kdelibs4c2a, anyway. Also note,
that it's probably not worth investing much time on this problem for the
0.4.x series of rkward. Versions 0.5.0 and on depend on KDE 4 and use
the new cmake-based build system from KDE. This suffers from similar
problems, but the implementation is vastly different.

[Bug 221399] Re: Not working in hardy x64

2008-05-01 Thread Thomas Friedrichsmeier
@Cesare: Yes, that patch is what addresses the lockup issue. This issue
is a race-condition, and generally ocurrs during startup, only (if at
all). On some systems it appears to be triggered much more frequently
than on others. For the vast majority of users it never showed up or
only rarely (but one user reported frequent lockups). In addition this
has been a long-standing bug, so I guess it's not terribly important
overall, and a simple rebuild may be good enough for hardy.

Thanks!

[Bug 221399] Re: Not working in hardy x64

2008-04-30 Thread Thomas Friedrichsmeier
To fix the problem about libRblas.so, an unmodified re-compilation of
RKWard 0.4.9-2 will suffice. This is because the configuration script
auto-detects wether or not libRblas.so is available to link against at
build time.

RKWard 0.4.9a-1 is now available in debian/unstable
(http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/r/rkward/current/changelog).
It contains another upstream fix which might be worth including: Fixed
some lockups during startup. (Upstream changelog available at
http://rkward.sf.net).

Not sure, whether this justifies an SRU or how to proceed on this. Just
to provide the information.

[Bug 224480] Re: rkward does not include the stats package

2008-04-30 Thread Thomas Friedrichsmeier
RKWard relies on the regular R installation. I'm not quite sure, whether you
use the regular ubuntu R packages. If you do not, please report this, whereever
you got your R packages from. If you are using ubuntu R packages, you might
want to check, whether you have r-recommended installed (which should generally
be pulled in automatically, IIRC, but maybe this is the problem).
Either way, I'll move this report to r-base for the R maintainers to look at.

[Bug 224480] Re: rkward does not include the stats package

2008-04-30 Thread Thomas Friedrichsmeier
I'll fill in some blanks:

The stats package is a part of a basic R installation. It seems to be
included in r-base-core (so, please ignore my comment about
r-recommended). In R terminology, stats is a base package, so it
would not generally be fetched from CRAN, manually. Since I don't use
Ubuntu myself, I can't tell, whether or not there may be a problem with
r-base-core in ubuntu. In debian/unstable it seems to work fine. You can
test by calling

 library (stats)
or
 example (summary.manova)

RKWard is a GUI frontend for R. This is not packaged in the form of an R
package. Rather it is an application linked against R (and depends on r
-base-core). RKWard is included in ubuntu. RKWard offers R package
management facilities, but really just uses the regular R mechanisms, so
I can't see, how this could be specific to RKWard (and again: no
problem, here), which is why I moved the report to r-base.

From the bug report it appears that something is broken in the user's R
installation. I can't tell, whether this is a problem in ubuntu
packages.

@JSmith: Please do provide the additional information requested by
Cesare, though. Also information on your installed versions of r-base, r
-base-core, and rkward might help.

[Bug 224480] Re: rkward does not include the stats package

2008-04-30 Thread Thomas Friedrichsmeier
rkward has not been rebuilt with this new version of r-base, could
this be at the root of this problem?

I *think* rkward will not start at all unless it is rebuilt (see bug
#221399; libRblas.so is no longer included in r-base-core 2.6.2), so
this should be a different issue. On the other hand, I can't rule out
the possibility that this is another symptom of the same underlying
issue.

Well, it's all just speculation without knowing the exact installed
versions, and more so, since I don't have a ubuntu system to test with.
If it does not pull too many dependencies for a quick test, maybe you
could install rkward and see what happens (there is an integrated R
Console, where you can try the example lines - if it starts at all).

In R 2.7 - when built with cairo support - the X11 device can use cairo

this automatically when used with R 2.7, so I see no reason to

[Bug 173459] Re: Latest version in Hardy fails to build

2007-12-02 Thread Thomas Friedrichsmeier
True, but if you look closely, this is not really a problem in the
rkward package, but rather the r-base packages were not fully available,
yet, when the build was attempted. So the build fails while trying to
install the r-base-dev build dependency.

Frankly, I'm not familiar with how this needs to be dealt with on Ubuntu
(I only take care of the debian packages). Simply somehow telling the
system to rebuild should (probably) be good enough. How is this done /
who can do this?

Here's a patch that adds a dummy option -t. It should not matter that
this option does not really do anything. If is not set, the caller will
not listen to output anyway, and if it is set kdesudo will a lest
*start*, now.

The patch also suppresses recognized lines of output. This should be
enough to be compatible with most kdesu-using apps in this respect.
Please apply.

[Bug 158672] Re: kdesu: Unknown option '-t'.

2007-11-22 Thread Thomas Friedrichsmeier
Here's a patch that adds a dummy option -t. It should not matter that
this option does not really do anything. If is not set, the caller will
not listen to output anyway, and if it is set kdesudo will a lest
*start*, now.

The patch also suppresses recognized lines of output. This should be
enough to be compatible with most kdesu-using apps in this respect.

[Bug 124234] Re: [apport] rkward.bin crashed with SIGSEGV

2007-11-20 Thread Thomas Friedrichsmeier
Hi,

could you attempt to reproduce this with a newer version of RKWard
0.4.7a should be available in ubuntu, 0.4.8a is current. 0.4.2 is pretty
old, and chances are the underlying problem has been fixed in the
meantime.

Thanks!

[Bug 139769] Re: .desktop file installed in wrong location

2007-11-20 Thread Thomas Friedrichsmeier
Hi all,

could you please, please, please forward stuff like this upstream in the
future? A simple message to rkward-devel AT lists DOT sourceforge DOT
net will suffice or any of a large number of further ways to contact the
devels.

Two more upstream releases have come and gone without a fix since this
was reported. Now that I've finally discovered this report by chance,
the next released version (upstream) will have a fix.

[Bug 158672] Re: kdesu: Unknown option '-t'.

2007-11-20 Thread Thomas Friedrichsmeier
This also affects rkward (R package installation dialog), and probably a
number of further apps. The -t option is important for applications that
need to run some commands with admin privileges, but also use/show the
output.

If kdesu is to be replaced by kdesudo (*), this option should be
implemented. Other apps rely on it.

-
(*): I do wonder, why, a little, since the foundation of kdesu
(http://api.kde.org/4.0-api/kdelibs-apidocs/kdesu/html/classKDESu_1_1SuProcess.html)
seems to be designed to support sudo, and kdesu itself has some relevant bits,
too
(http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/KDE/kdebase/runtime/kdesu/kdesu/sudlg.cpp?revision=736838view=markup).
Whether that is broken or not, I don't know, but can't this be fixed in kdesu
itself? Well, I guess you'll have your reasons.

** Also affects: rkward (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New
