I don't think this is a grace issue only. This is an X server issue.
Unfortunaly there hasn't been a new release from Ubuntu yet.
I have put a few notes on my blog on how I fixed this. Gladly rebuilding the X
server from source is pretty straight forward these days in ubuntu

I came up with basically the same solution as Jerry a while ago and have been
anxiously waiting for a new xorg-server release from Ubuntu. What has to be
done to get this pushed ? Maybe its not considered serious, but many scientific
applications are still Motif based, so 10.04 workstations
