[Bug 1588637] Re: iwlwifi: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000

2016-10-05 Thread Valentin Neacsu
I had the same issue as reported here. I noticed at boot that the driver
was failing to load its primary firmware choice, falling back to a
different version:

[3.538299] iwlwifi :04:00.0: Direct firmware load for
iwlwifi-7260-17.ucode failed with error -2
[3.541299] iwlwifi :04:00.0: loaded firmware version 16.242414.0
op_mode iwlmvm

I checked /lib/firmware and the highest version I had there was
iwlwifi-7260-16.ucode, which corresponds to 16.242414.0 in the logs
above. I decided to rename iwlwifi-7260-16.ucode to prevent it from
being loaded, as this would allow the driver to fall back onto the next
best firmware file, iwlwifi-7260-13.ucode. This didn't help.

To fix this problem I looked at
https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi#firmware and
downloaded iwlwifi-7260-17.ucode (via git) and copied it into
/lib/firmware, then rebooted. I haven't had any issue since applying
this fix, where previously I'd be getting a firmware crash once every
15-30 minutes.

This new firmware file is not present in linux-firmware 1.157.3 that I have on
my Xenial box, but it does seem to be included in linux-firmware 1.161 as part
of Yakkety, so I suggest downloading and installing it:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/yakkety/amd64/linux-firmware/1.161

It would be great if this update was pushed to Xenial as well in order
to mitigate the issues we're seeing.

Judging by the fact that downgrading to a previous firmware version
didn't seem to help (so the issue was not caused by a firmware upgrade),
but upgrading did help, I suspect that a recent change in iwlwifi or the
kernel is causing the wifi to fail unless it is using the new firmware
in iwlwifi-7260-17.ucode.

[Bug 1351772] Re: disable touchpad while typing doesn't work

2015-05-03 Thread Valentin Neacsu
As mentioned by Jeremy, removing the -t argument will fix this behavior. To
work around this issue I have unchecked the Disable while typing checkbox and
have added the following command to ~/.xprofile:
syndaemon -i 0.5 -K -R -d

I would love to see this fixed as this seems like a very easy fix.

[Bug 182931] Re: USB pendrive, write speed

2009-08-31 Thread Valentin Neacsu
Just as I was moving all my files from my EXT4 home drive to an external
USB drive (in case you're wondering, I'm dumping Ubuntu) I hit this
exact same bug. Starting speed is about 40 MB/s with HDD led being
constantly lit and ending up around 3 MB/s with almost no HDD activity
on the LED. This bug right here is one of the many examples of bugs for
which I can no longer use Ubuntu.

[Bug 371312] Re: cpufreq-applet: shows 2.54/2.53/1.6/800 Steps

2009-08-28 Thread Valentin Neacsu
I have the same symptoms, but my question is different: Why is there a
800 MHz frequency option?

I am asking this because:
1. There's no such frequency when running Windows with every driver correctly
installed and checking the real-time frequency with CPU-Z. The minimum
frequency available in Windows is 1600 MHz.
2. It's physically impossible for the CPU to reach that frequency given that
the minimum multiplier for a Core 2 Duo processor is 6x, which, given its FSB
of 1066 MHz (quad pumped, meaning 266 MHz real clock), gives a minimum
frequency of 6x 266 MHz = 1600 MHz, just as reported by Windows.

Can someone please shed some light over this?

[Bug 366073] Re: Copying from FTP freezes

2009-06-26 Thread Valentin Neacsu
Sebastien, as far as ubuntu.com is concerned, Ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty) is
the *current* version. There's no mention about karmic, which I suppose
is the development version. Regular users don't really care about
development versions, so how about you fix reported bugs for the
*current* release, and not for some future unstable development release?
Otherwise I really can't see the benefit of reporting bugs any more.

It's sad to see this attitude, Sebastien. I helped fix the bug upstream,
just as you have previously asked me to, and now you refuse to port the
bug fix that I helped develop and that affects me. What kind of bug-
reporting reward is that? Is this how you encourage your community to
help? You previously said there were not enough requests for a fix -
poor excuse IMO; now you have enough requests to fix it. What is the
reason for not fixing it for the release I filed the bug report for?

2009-06-09 Thread Valentin Neacsu
Sebastian, I was answering to Pedro's question about whether this is
still valid in Jaunty. Since this is still an issue in Jaunty I took the
liberty to reopen the bug, as per the instruction in Pedro's comment.

On the one hand you're telling us not to open duplicates, on the other
you're telling us to open separate bug requests (that IMO are
duplicates). Please make up your mind.

[Bug 371739] Re: Fast scrolling with continuous mode enabled results in garbage inside the window

2009-05-06 Thread Valentin Neacsu
Update: I'm using a laptop with an external monitor. Laptop resolution
is 1024x768, external VGA monitor resolution is 1280x1024. When I try to
scroll an evince window inside the laptop display everything works
smoothly. When I move the window to the external screen the above
mentioned symptoms appear. I've also experimented with Nautilus
scrolling a large window (/dev/) and, although it's a lot less
noticeable, the tearing exemplified is still present. I'm pretty sure
this isn't related to evince but evince is best at showing these tears.

[Bug 371525] [NEW] laptop-mode crashes taking up 100% CPU with IOWait when polling for battery level is enabled

2009-05-04 Thread Valentin Neacsu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: laptop-mode-tools

When enabling battery polling in /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/battery-level-
polling.conf, switching to battery results in crashing the laptop with
100% CPU usage, most of it being IOWait. Using htop I was able to see a
lot of laptop-mode battery-related processes running just before
crashing. When the laptop crashes, it usually has very high HDD usage
and is unresponsive to any keys. Magic SysRq key always works in
rebooting the laptop. I was able to fix this by disabling battery level
polling.

[Bug 359392] Re: [i965] X freezes starting on April 3rd

2009-05-03 Thread Valentin Neacsu
I am having an issue with Jaunty on i915. Using Metacity, the CPU gets
slowly but surely eaten up with no obvious process eating up the CPU
cycles. top shows no process taking more than 5-10% CPU time, while
the System Monitor panel applet shows the CPU at 100% usage, with
IOWait eating up most of it. When this happens I gradually lose
control of the system, where sometimes I can reboot it, while other
times it just freezes trying to do it. Most programs stop responding
when this happens. Switching to text mode doesn't help as bash can't get
enough CPU time to initialize. I can reboot with the Magic SysRq key. I
can trigger this easily while on battery, usually within 5-10 minutes of
normal usage (browsing, reading PDFs etc).

My question is if this bug is related to the above described symptoms,
or is it a completely different bug that's affecting me?

Thanks.

[Bug 366073] Re: Copying from FTP freezes

2009-04-26 Thread Valentin Neacsu
From the bugzilla page:
Could you please try this:
in daemon/gvfsbackendftp.c find the line that sends OPTS UTF8 ON and replace
the 0 with RESPONSE_PASS_500.
Build, install and test if this solves the problem?

Any clue how to do that? I can compile and install, but I have no clue
which package in Ubuntu that is. Also I'd appreciate it if you could
give me a .deb to test instead of installing all the build dependencies
myself.

[Bug 366073] [NEW] Copying from FTP freezes

2009-04-24 Thread Valentin Neacsu
Public bug reported:

Actually there are 2 bugs in one, might be related:
First, when logging in to my FTP, the 1st attempt always fails and then logging
in works as expected. After that I can upload and delete files, but I can not
copy files from FTP to my laptop. It stays like the attached picture, even
after clicking the Cancel button.

[Bug 146859] Re: No dri (and therefore no compiz) for virtual screen greater than 2048x2048

2009-04-21 Thread Valentin Neacsu
In Jaunty, as opposed to Intrepid, when setting a vritual desktop larger than
2048x2048 using 915GM, I get software renderer:
valen...@valentin-laptop:~$ glxinfo | grep renderer
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer

Using a virtual desktop size less or equal than 2048x2048 I get the normal
renderer:
valen...@valentin-laptop:~$ glxinfo | grep renderer
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 915GM GEM 20090326 2009Q1 RC2
x86/MMX/SSE

Hope this is related and gets fixed, because it is preventing me from
using my dual screen setup side-by-side.

[Bug 364476] [NEW] When using vertically stacked screens, maximized apps go under the bottom bar

2009-04-21 Thread Valentin Neacsu
Public bug reported:

After a fresh update to Jaunty I was forced to use a vertically stacked
dual-screen setup, because of the bug described in this comment:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/mesa/+bug/146859/comments/47

This has its bugs as well - maximized windows on the main screen have
their status bar or lower portion of the window hidden underneath the
bottom bar. This issue can be reproduced with either metacity or compiz.

2009-04-21 Thread Valentin Neacsu
I know it's a hardware limitation to 2048x2048 when using DRI, but what
about when not using DRI? As I said, when I set a virtual desktop size
greater than 2048x2048, the driver is switched to software renderer, as
shown above. This was not happening in Intrepid.

[Bug 363822] [NEW] battery design capacity is reported incorrecly

2009-04-19 Thread Valentin Neacsu
Public bug reported:

On a HP Compaq nc6220 using Jaunty RC (but also on Intrepid) the reported
design capacity is wrong. The label on the battery reads ~56 Wh, while the
reported design capacity goes down after every recharge, right now it is at:
r...@valentin-laptop:~# cat /proc/acpi/battery/C177/info
present: yes
design capacity: 2046 mAh
last full capacity: 2046 mAh
battery technology: rechargeable
design voltage: 10800 mV
design capacity warning: 103 mAh
design capacity low: 21 mAh
capacity granularity 1: 100 mAh
capacity granularity 2: 100 mAh
model number:Primary
serial number: 00860 2008/02/16
battery type:LIon
OEM info:Hewlett-Packard

Which translates to roughly 2.046 Ah * 10.8 V = 22.1 Wh (the same as the
value reported by gnome-power-manager).

As you may have noticed, design capacity and last full capacity are
always equal, which should not happen on a 2 year old battery.

[Bug 363496] [NEW] laptop-mode doesn't always honor cpufreq.conf

2009-04-18 Thread Valentin Neacsu
Public bug reported:

I've had this problem in Intrepid and now in Jaunty freshly installed
from RC. I have configured the following in /etc/laptop-
mode/conf.d/cpufreq.conf:

BATT_CPU_GOVERNOR=ondemand
LM_AC_CPU_GOVERNOR=performance
NOLM_AC_CPU_GOVERNOR=performance

I was expecting my CPU to use the performance governor and stay at
maximum frequency when on AC and use the ondemand governor and vary
between minimum and maximum frequency based on CPU load when on battery.

What I am getting is a sort of random behavior, where sometimes I have
the performance governor when running on battery and ondemand governor
when running on AC. It always involves a suspend/hibernate then resume
cycle.

Note that I have /etc/default/acpi-support configured with
ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE=true.

I haven't been able to test this any sooner as the laptop that has the
problem is my main work laptop, and I need it working. I had some spare
time this evening so I've tested the Beta CD, and the problem hasn't
manifested itself while doing some browsing, torrent download and upload
and some continuous pinging. I'll further test Jaunty once it hits
final.

It would help me a lot if you could provide me with some steps that you
believe could trigger this bug.

Thanks.

[Bug 331961] [NEW] Muted sound level is forgotten after some time

I should have been more specific. Try Subpixel smoothing, full hinting

Preferences window. With or without the 10-* symlinks removed, the
result is that which I have attached earlier.

[Bug 43293] Re: Fn+F4 doesn't switch to ext monitor Compaq 4020us (all other Fn keys fine)

2009-02-04 Thread Valentin Neacsu
Running Ubuntu 8.10 with latest updates installed.

Running point #2 shows that an event is not seen on Fn+F4. Tried running
it also form console, but it complained about being unable to open the
display.

I've realised that trying to switch to external monitor only works from
the console (CTRL+ALT+F1). Any idea why it takes 2 keypresses to
activate the console? The first attempt brings me back into X.

Output of #4 is attached below.

At #7 I tried every input, 0-8 worked. Only input 1 sensed anything
while pressing Fn+F4, but it also reacted to other keypresses. I would
have attached the full output of the #7 command, but for some reason
every time I try to redirect it to a file, the file stays empty. I'll
try to reproduce it here:

EV_NSC code=4 value=62
EV_SYN code=0 value=0

This is what always appears for Fn+F4.

As you can see in the outout of #4, there's no input.keys for input 1
and input.x11_driver is set to evdev, but X doesn't see it so this would
mean filing a bug against hal.

For the remaining part of #7, issuing cat /usr/include/linux/input.h |
grep EV_NSC finds nothing, while issuing cat
/usr/include/linux/input.h | grep EV_SYN finds #define EV_SYN 0x00.

For #9, the value needed is up above. the output of lshal | grep
system.hardware is attached below.

#10, no other input devices reacts to Fn+F2.

#11-13 not needed.

Please instruct me further on how and what to test.

[Bug 190848] Re: font in terminal does not resemble font in preview

2009-01-28 Thread Valentin Neacsu
Still a problem in Intrepid. Removed 10* and 53* links and still the
problem is there. Most annoying is for 8pt Mono fonts in gnome-terminal,
which does in no way resemble what the preview and gedit show. Somehow
the font spacing is different in gnome-terminal than what it should be.

Check attached images for more details.

PS: is it me or is the lcddefault LCD filter much much worse than the
default LCD filter, whichever that may be. Removing the 11-lcd-filter-
lcddefault.conf symlink was a revelation for me, giving me Windows-like
crisp fonts.

[Bug 315583] [NEW] muted sound level lost on resume

2009-01-09 Thread Valentin Neacsu
Public bug reported:

This is happening on Intrepid running on a HP nc6220. Normally when I
have let's say 50% volume, then hit the mute button, the sound is muted.
When I hit the mute button again, sound level returns to 50%. But if I
hit mute while having 50% volume, hibernate/suspend, then resume, and
then hit the mute button again, I get 0% sound level, even though it
should un-mute and return to 50% volume.

Yes, it's the same bug, but contrary to that bug's status, it isn't

This bug is still present in Intrepid with latest updates installed. I'd
mark it myself I have no clue how to do it, and rather than breaking
something I'd rather someone else do it.

Thanks.

[Bug 226415] Re: Wi-fi with WPA an ipw2200 disconnects

2009-01-03 Thread Valentin Neacsu
I've been having random problems with my ipw2200 card on a HP nc6220
running a fresh Intrepid x86. For starters, I've enabled the LED
following the instructions here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/21367

On random occasions I've seen the LED blink while connected, sound/music
sometimes stutters when that happens, then everything goes back to
normal until it blinks again at a radon time. I haven't given it much
attention until now.

Lately I've been having this problem where the wireless just disconnects
(while other wireless clients remain attached and working). So far the
work-around has been to disable and re-enable the wireless card using
the wireless button on my laptop. That has worked until now, when this
happened again. I tried disabling networking by right clicking on the
nm-applet icon, and re-enabling it again to see if that makes it work
without having to resort to the on/off wireless button. That didn't work
so I tried the old method of disabling the wireless and re-enabling it
from the button. Weirdly enough that didn't work either. The only way I
could make it work again was to reboot.

What I'm speculating right now is that when the LED blinks, the wireless
disconnects and reconnects again for some weird reason. But sometimes it
just can't re-connect and goes dead. Why it stopped working at all today
I have no clue.

Please see the attached (edited) daemon.log. If there are any other
files needed, please let me know.

[Bug 226415] Re: Wi-fi with WPA an ipw2200 disconnects

2009-01-03 Thread Valentin Neacsu
It just happened again. I was having Pidgin connected to MSN and Y!M,
Banshee streaming from Last.fm, an OpenVPN session active and Deluge
downloading a torrent at about 50 KB/s.

Just as before, I couldn't revive it with the on/off wireless button and
I had to reboot. Just before rebooting I did a dmesg, the output of
which is attached.

[Bug 43293] Re: Fn+F4 doesn't switch to ext monitor Compaq 4020us (all other Fn keys fine)

2008-12-29 Thread Valentin Neacsu
I'm using a fresh install of Intrepid x86 with Intel 915 graphics on a
HP Compaq 6220. Pressing Fn+F4 should switch to external monitor, either
in clone mode or extended mode. It doesn't happen like that as the
external monitor doesn't detect a signal source. The same external
monitor works fine with a Dell Latitude D630 with nVidia graphics and
proprietary drivers.
