I had a fresh Ubuntu 18.04 install and was effected by this bug. Running
sudo dpkg-reconfigure network-manager-pptp-gnome
Solved the problem.

LiveCD.
Live CD switches to 640x480 and displays at 1280x480 all garbled up
The installer however works, in 800x600 mode, without issues.

On password confirmation, system tries to login to gnome, but only returns
message Failed to load session ubuntu with only option to log out.
SSH login works fine.
VNC login returns the error message.

First I think it isn't an xserver bug as I thoght first. Because in the system
logs there weren't any --MARK-- lines.
Also this error didn't happen since the HAL update. I don't if the HAL update
fixes this problem or my BIOS flash.
To your questions: It happend totally randomly.
I thoght this error was gone, but unfortunaly it just happend again. I
played warsow (a opensource multiplayer shooter) when it happends again.
The strange thng was when it happend the sound went back about one
second and played again.
