I experience this same issue on a fresh Noble installation. Today, we don't create the sparse file "with the required size" when it is first opened. We could try seeking to maximum size of the device and writing a single byte, and seeing whether or not that fails, and if it fails, *assume* that this was caused by the target file system not supporting such a large file. There are other reasons why the write might fail (for example, the system administrator or some supervisor program might have set a file size limit via the setrlimit(3) systme call or the /etc/security/limits.h file. Also note not there is no supported way for a userspace program to query the kernel to find the maximum file size supported by a particular file system. It will depend on the file system type, the file system block size, and potentially, file system features that might be enabled on a particular file system. I agree that it would be nice to print a more user-friendly error message, and right away, as opposed after writing up to 16TB of image file. Same issue with Secure boot enable and file system encrypted. The only workaround i find was at the login screen toggle to shell Crtl Alt F3, then login and manually launch the gnome (startx) to see what was wrong.The error was xf86enableio failed to enable io ports -03ff operation. Something wrong in the configuration file perhaps linked with the use of a dual screen configuration. So sudo apt install ubuntu- desktop will allow to run gnome ( without tweaks from canonical). You can reproduce this by running `cloud-init schema --system` in the debug shell. As you will see there, it finds that the network- config.json is invalid (so the cloud-config.txt is valid!) The server iso [1] uses subiquity version 24.04.1, which has cloud-init 23.4.4-0ubuntu0~22.04.1 built in. The fix for the issue you're observering is in cloud-init 24.1.1 or higher [2], as that contains the fix for this issue [3]. Refreshing the installer via a directive in your autoinstall.yaml wouldn't help, because the schema is invalid, so it doesn't get there... ``` refresh-installer: update: true channel: latest/edge ``` ... however, one could run `snap refresh subiquity --channel=latest/edge` by hand at the shell prompt after the error occurs. I toggled "Antialising" in GNOME tweaks, and some characters return TEMPORARILY. Then I opened a new GTK4/Libadwaita program, problems re- occur. + + Besides, problems exist in Xorg/Wayland, as Ubuntu 23.10 uses Xwayland. + + Problems exist in Plasma. Texts in desktop icons are missing, too. AND I FOUND THAT the "Graphics" Section (the driver name) has been changed to "AMD Readon 680M" after the update (I think it is something like "AMD Rembrandt" before sudo apt upgrade). (I toggled in GNOME tweaks to make the window display graphics info; if I re-open it, fonts will be missing again) If I hover on the place where text should display, some texts may display but icons would not. This problem affects my life qualify, thus I need to make clear where it is the problem. GTK4? Libadwaita? Graphics? Ubuntu? Because problems does not occur on GTK3 based apps, thus I can submit this issue in Firefox.
