[Bug 518447] Re: Tilda without true tansparency after system start

2010-12-15 Thread William F Pearson
I'm almost sure this has to do with Tilda attempting to start before the
compositing engine is ready. The fix here would be to have the ability
to control startup application priority.

[Bug 278698] Re: Firefox doesn't safe changes in menubar with TMP and Ubufox

2008-10-21 Thread William F Pearson
When I was testing and trouble shooting yesterday i found that this bug
occurs with TMP alone on Firefox 3.1. On the default Firefox 3.0 the
plugins conflict and the bug doesn't occur unless both are installed.
I'm not entirely sure this is Ubfox's fault or TMP.

** Summary changed:

- Firefox doesn't safe changes in menubar with TMP and Ubufox
+ Firefox doesn't save changes in menubar with TMP and Ubufox

** Description changed:

When using Ubufox and the extension Tab Mix Plus [1] (even in the
- newest release 0.3.7pre.081003), one could not safe changes made in the
+ newest release 0.3.7pre.081003), one could not save changes made in the
  menubar.

For instance, when you try to replace the home-icon with the chronicle-
icon in the menubar by clicking View Toolbar Customize, you can drag
drop the little house in front of the addressbar into the just opened
window and replace it by the Chronicle (e.g.). After restarting Firefox
  the changes won't take place.

This fails even with a completely new profile. Just add Tab Mix Plus as
the only add-on (besides Ubufox) and changes won't take place. With
UbuFox being uninstalled, Tab Mix Plus works just fine.

  Checkable with 8.04 and 8.10 and Fox 3.0.1 - 3.0.3

Edit: I did a little research and found out that Ubufox has been
upgraded twice since July developing the above mentioned problems:

  18.09.2008: ubufox (0.6~b1-0ubuntu1) to 0.6~b1-0ubuntu2
  25.09.2008: ubufox (0.6~b1-0ubuntu2) to 0.6~b1-0ubuntu4

Re: [Bug 165197] Re: 'New Printer' = hang over network

2008-01-24 Thread William F Pearson
If i get a vote for the fix, I would much rather have separate wizards
and manual configuration. I also think the difference between local
and network printers should be distinguished. I'f I'm trying to
install a local photo printer the utility shouldn't need to scan the
network at all. The ability to export and import settings would be
great for deployment, but that's a bit beyond the scope of the bug.

[Bug 156686] Re: DNS support not enabled at compile time

2007-10-24 Thread William F Pearson
Building DNS update support requires uuid-dev. Here is the diff for
the debian control file. I've build the source packages and they're
available in my PPA if anyone needs immediate support.

To give a little background. In a AD domain with dhcp clients, dns
updates aren't immediate, in fact old records can lie for weeks.
Performing client updates are an immediate fix if DNS configuration
isn't available.

2007-10-04 Thread William F Pearson
I have documented the kernel module building process on the wiki page,
and it's super simple from the command line:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VirtualBox

This could and should be automated with the install like X configuration
or Postfix configuration. At the very least the process documentation
should be included with the package. I'm sorry but I'm just now learning
the packaging process or I'd create the patch myself. If someone would
like to mentor me on this, I'd be happy.

The OSE, Open source edition, doesn't support USB. If you're using it for
personal use, you can get the full featured personal version for free,
otherwise you'll have to buy a license.

The command you issued to get the error, in my opinion should return a message

IMHO, if innotek wants to lock out certain features in the OSE, they

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alacarte

This bug affects both Feisty and Gutsy and is reproducible.

When editing a application launcher that was incorrectly added during a
Wine installation alacarte didn't edit both file affected.

This file was correctly changed with alacarte.
.local/share/applications/wine-Programs-MEDITECH-Workstation\ 3.desktop

This file was NOT changed with alacarte.
.local/share/applications/wine/Programs/MEDITECH/Workstation 3.desktop

The second file is the one that appears in main menu Applications
Wine Programs MEDITECH

Alacarte should update the new path when the application launcher is
edited.

Reproduction.
Install application wine setup.exe
Click on menu Application Wine Programs MEDITECH Workstation 3
Error Path not found
Open alacarte and correct the the application path.
Click on menu Application Wine Programs MEDITECH Workstation 3
Error Path not found
To correct the error, edit the following file with a text editor
.local/share/applications/wine/Programs/MEDITECH/Workstation 3.desktop

Just a note: I believe the application path was incorrectly generated in
the first place because it's a legacy 16 bit proprietary telnet client.
This app is poorly hacked on Windows. It's not surprising to find
problems with it in Ubuntu.

Please advise me if I need to file additional bugs with the wine or
gnome teams. I filed this bug because the editing process is handled by
alacarte. If I can be of further assistance let me know.

[Bug 84226] Re: Fast user switch applet causes high processor load

2007-10-03 Thread William F Pearson
Christoph: That's an interesting question because getent passwd loads
every user on my Win 2k3 domain. This machine is authenticated to the
domain controller via Samba ADS.

# getent passwd
...
real0m2.246s
user0m0.016s
sys 0m0.012s

#time getent passwd |wc -l
3964

Thats a lot of users!

Is there a way to limit fast-user-switch to local users only? Certain
proprietary applications require me to be authenticated to the domain or
I wouldn't need Samba ADS at all.

[Bug 106528] Re: Enabling Desktop effects causes Konversation to display Server List window

2007-10-03 Thread William F Pearson
I can confirm this bug in Gutsy Konquerer version 1.0.1.

From the KDE Bug report:

--- Additional Comment #2 From Eike Hein 2007-07-05 12:46 ---
Fixed in SVN revision 604746 in November '06.

Websvn show that v 1.0.1 was tagged to revision 593037 with an age of 11
months.
A bugfix release upstream would help here.

I checked out that revision and isolated the bugfix (hopefully).
Can someone else try it out?

I can confirm it. Gutsy x386. Very frustrating because this is a laptop
with no need to fast user switch.

It's connecting to localhost

I ran it a couple of more times from the command line. It looks like the

Sorry about that.

[Bug 139335] Re: system-config-printer: no way to cancel 'searching for printers'

 time /usr/sbin/lpinfo -v /dev/null
real0m3.628s
user0m0.016s
sys 0m0.016s

I think the delay happens during PPD search process. It's when the
printers respond with the make/model/driver query via ipp on port 9100.

I don't think there is a problem with system-config-printer per se. It's
a problem with network latency, aggravated by the quantity of printers
on our network. I'm sure there's an netstat on nmap command that would
verify this, but I'll claim ignorance. I can attest that cpu or disk
activity doesn't spike during the delay.

2007-09-27 Thread William F Pearson
some of those programs exit immediately. The only one that runs with
output is snmp. The process ends in 7 seconds. There are no local
printers attached to my system, usb, bt, parallel or serial(com). There
is some other process that is causing the delay. Here's the console
output:

gksudo system-config-printer

Just to clarify my previous statement: It took me half an hour to add
two printers, because the wizard searched for printers both times.

[Bug 139335] Re: system-config-printer: no way to cancel 'searching for printers'

2007-09-27 Thread William F Pearson
Sorry I wanted to add. There are hundreds of printers on my network and
this application finds dozens of them, The process is lengthy because it
fetches detailed information about each printer including PPD
information. That's extremely handy with a few network printers, but it
doesn't scale well.

[Bug 139335] Re: system-config-printer: no way to cancel 'searching for printers'

2007-09-26 Thread William F Pearson
Running Gutsy Pre-Beta
Version: 0.7.75+svn1566-0ubuntu1

I believe this bug importance should be escalated. On Class B network it
took over half an hour to search for every printer on the network.
Without a cancel button, adding multiple printers graphically would be
an absolute pain in my butt. A prompt Do you want to search the network
for printers now? would be useful on smaller networks. Thanks for all
your hard work.

I followed the fix here and it works http://www.go2linux.org/upgrading-

Populating the file /var/lib/update-manager/meta-release with the
attatched file fixes the issue.

[Bug 84899] Re: SSH with GSSAPIAuthentication option on SSH servers are very slow

2007-05-25 Thread William F. Pearson, III
I also had to edit nsswitch.conf
This fix worked for me, i am now able to connect and the connection is much
faster.

In /etc/nsswitch.conf, I replaced :

hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

with

hosts: files dns

Note both the client and server are Ubuntu boxes connecting to an Active
Directory server via Samba winbind Kerberos 5 authentication. I believe
this has something to do with the problem.
