[Bug 1909788] [NEW] Synaptics touchpad not recognized

2020-12-31 Thread Zack C
Public bug reported:

Laptop model: Clevo P650RS-G
Touchpad make: Synaptics
lsb_release: 20.04.1 LTS
libinput version: 0.29.0-1

The touchpad refuses to work even in Ubuntu Live boot, but it is operational in
Windows 10.

In previous releases, I've been able to add "i8042.reset" to the grub
configuration to make the touchpad work sporadically, but that fails
completely now. The touchpad does not show up in xinput or the synaptics
driver.

[Bug 1671606] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6-0ubuntu0.16.04.1

2020-01-13 Thread Zack Kollar
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1688018 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1688018

This is scary thread for a relatively easy fix, for some reason dnsmasq
and OpenVPN don't play well together, it's as simple as commenting out
the "dns=dnsmasq" line in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and
then restarting network manager.

[Bug 1605189] Re: Authentication is required for suspending the system

2016-09-16 Thread Zack Smith
This is an annoying bug that hasn't been addressed in the two and a half
years it has plagued Ubuntu with the Xfce desktop. One can find bug
reports going back to 14.04 after a faulty patch broke suspend.
Fortunately for the terminally-skilled among us, the workaround is here:

suspend

[Bug 1510281] Re: Screen resolution not saved between sessions

2015-10-28 Thread Zack Smith
I'm experiencing this bug as well. Running Xubuntu (Xfce) 15.10 (wily)
x86 (kernel 4.2.0-16) connected to a 1360x768 Hyundai IQ television
monitor via a standard VGA cable. In 14.04 (trusty), I can manually set
the screen resolution to 1360x768 and it will survive reboots, but in
15.10 the setting will usually - but not always - revert itself to
1280x1024, which looks horrible and is non-native for this display. The
login screen is *never* the correct resolution after a restart. I have
only a single user configured, and no custom backgrounds selected.

 Title:
pxe boot from maas fails due to time out

 Status in MAAS:
   Incomplete
Status in maas package in Ubuntu:
   Incomplete

 Bug description:
1 create a new vm node on a 13.10 server, attach the network to a
existing openvswitch, use virtio as nic.
2 install 13.10 onto the vm
3 login to the vm via ssh, and apt-get install maas from archive.
4 modify /etc/maas/import_pxe_files to only download pxe files for
 precise and saucy
   5 run maas-import-pxe-files
6 create another node by using virt-manager from my laptop, and make it
 boot from pxe.
7 run dhcpdum on maas node, we can see dhcp works as expect, and from
the console of the pxe boot node, it shows ip address has been assigned,
trying to get pxelinux.0 from tftp, after couple of seconds, it fails, due
 to timeout.

[Bug 1311158] Re: WebUI do not work after fresh install

2014-04-22 Thread Zack Parrish
I can also get what appears to be a functioning MAAS controller with web
UI following Jonathan's work around. However, I'm still having a heck
of a time getting the web UI to recognize the boot images I've imported
through MAAS command line. It's also proving quite difficult to get a
node to show up in the web UI nodes page.

For the record, I'm testing all of this on VMs. The controller and all
nodes will be virtualized.

Also, if I run:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

it breaks my working installation and goes right back to the Internal
Server error message from Apache. Updating does pull down an update
to:

python-django

which appears to be tied to a lot of the originally posted errors.

alternative patch: unconditional EXTEND_PAD

This is what I think should be done. Yeah, it means we're at the mercy
of the video drivers on X11, but that gives us more leverage to kick the
X people and the distros, and I don't like working around problems when
we can fix them at source.

Incidentally, my tests were all with in-tree Cairo, but I've now tried
--enable-system-cairo and it made no difference.

[Bug 263661]

2014-02-21 Thread Zack Weinberg
Replacing the entire body of PreparePatternForUntiledDrawing with

{
aPattern-SetExtend(gfxPattern::EXTEND_NONE);
aPattern-SetFilter(gfxPattern::FILTER_FAST);
}

reproduces the 3.6 behavior. Replacing it with

{
aPattern-SetExtend(gfxPattern::EXTEND_PAD);
aPattern-SetFilter(gfxPattern::FILTER_FAST);
}

produces behavior which is _nearly_ correct; the image itself is
upscaled correctly (instead of being gradientified and fattened), and
there aren't black lines under the image at any zoom level, but some of
the lines still get black blobs at their right edges at some zoom
levels, and also now sometimes at their left edges. However, this
happens much less often.

Based on this I feel relatively confident in diagnosing a video driver
bug, and my recommendation is still to rip out the entire mess and use
EXTEND_PAD and a good filter unconditionally, then to work with the
X.org folks to get the video drivers fixed.

Your system is nigh-identical to mine but for the video drivers, so
yeah, that sounds pretty convincing. I am testing some random trunk
revision from last week + the patches, though.

Who would I have to blackmail to get more recent Nouveau drivers into
experimental?

[Bug 263661]

2014-02-21 Thread Zack Weinberg
I upgraded the shared pixman and cairo libraries on this computer to
0.21.2 and 1.10.0 respectively. Xorg.0.log indicates pixman 0.21 is in
use. Same bad behavior with (or without) joedrew's patches.

The nouveau drivers are the next obvious culprit. They haven't been
updated by this distro since 2010-08-25, but I really don't want to go
to the trouble of building them myself (I'd have to build my own kernel
as well).

Mike Hommey should have been cc:ed on this bug a long time ago. My bad.
Any comments, Mike?

[Bug 263661]

2014-02-21 Thread Zack Weinberg
Comment on attachment 497112
Use EXTEND_PAD on X

Tested http://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/rev/5d9e1a56d922 on my
current Linux box: X server vendor release code 10707000, Nouveau driver
0.0.16, NV94 video chipset.

The test case in attachment 351955 shows display artifacts:

* with an unmodified tree;
* with joe's patches for this bug and bug 566283;
* and even with PreparePatternForUntiledDrawing chainsawed down to just

{
aPattern-SetExtend(gfxPattern::EXTEND_PAD);
aPattern-SetFilter(aDefaultFilter);
}

The artifacts are not the same as what I get with 3.6 on the same
hardware. 3.6 shows thin green lines, all the same color throughout,
some of which have solid black dots at their right edges; at some zoom
levels there are also solid black lines underneath the green line (with
a white pixel or two in between).

mozilla-central never produces the solid black dots at the right edges;
however, the green lines are not all the same color throughout, they are
the proper color in the middle, and fade to neutral gray at both edges.
Some of the lines get black lines underneath them. And they all appear
to be slightly fatter than they were in 3.6. This behavior is more or
less the same regardless of whether any patches are applied (the patch
seems to change subtleties of the artifacts).

It is plausible to me that this is a bug in nouveau, and honestly I
think the correct course of action at this point is to nuke the entire
mess, use EXTEND_PAD unconditionally, and then work with the Cairo and X
driver folks to figure out what's still wrong and fix it properly.
Nonetheless I cannot say that this patch fixes the original problem.

(In reply to comment #63)
I can't see myself being OK with this any time soon - there are too many
 people
with old-enough X that unconditional EXTEND_PAD will hurt.

In that case, and looking at the reports in comment 55 and comment 58,
maybe we should go ahead with your patch. We certainly shouldn't be
generalizing from my computer, which has display artifacts *with or
without* your patch, that have been conclusively pinned on the video
drivers (see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32855 ).

[Bug 1099828] Re: Tab bar is not displayed when there is only one page open in a window

2013-01-17 Thread Zack Hixon
I didn't have this problem with the prior version of Chromium, with the
same situation as David Deans. I also can't change certain settings in
the settings menu, for instance what pages open when I open Chromium.
This doesn't happen with the latest Chrome on Windows XP, so it's
definitely not intended.

[Bug 1085336] Re: lubuntu-12.10-alternate-x86_64.iso is not capable of PXE netowrk installing the lubuntu-desktop meta package

2012-12-01 Thread Zack Perry
** Description changed:

- 2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname'
or by checking in Software Center: ditto
- 3) What you expected to happen: the same Iso can be used to carry out a
successful desktop install via both a CD based install and a PXE based network
install.
+ 1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -
About Ubuntu: Lubuntu 12.10, as provided by lubuntu-12.10-alternate-x86_64

+ 3) What you expected to happen: the same Iso can be used to carry out a
successful lubuntu-desktop install via both a CD based install and a PXE based
network install.
  4) What happened instead: CD based install gets a fully working graphical
login UI. PXE network based install just gets a text login.

  More details

The lubuntu-12.10-alternate-x86_64.iso can be burned to a CD and a full
working desktop install can be carried out without even network access.
Nevertheless, an attempt to use the same iso for a hands-off PXE network
install fails to install a full desktop. Instead, a text login screen

it's not installed. The syslog in /var/log/installer doesn't show
  anything either.

[Bug 1079226] [NEW] tomboy loses open notes when laptop runs out of power

2012-11-15 Thread zack dows
Public bug reported:

Linux mint cinnamon 14 rc (with encrypted home), tomboy 1.12.0.

I had a note open, I then went away and left my laptop.

Im not sure exactly what happened, but when I came back my laptop had
ran out of power.

When I switched it on again, that note no longer existed. I could not
find it anywhere (I looked in ~home/.local/share/tomboy/backup).

able to log in once without graphical errors. For example, when I open
the settings menu, I don't see anything except a vague outline of what's
supposed to be the menu. When I hover my mouse over something in the
launcher, the tag is shown, and when I navigate away, it stays there. I
tried re-installing twice, and this problem is not resolved. The one
time it was just fine, I shut down the computer and it was glitchy
again. This is really frustrating, because I would have to install
another operating system to it. I downloaded the ISO file, burnt it to a
CD-R, and installed Ubuntu that way because I didn't have internet
access on that computer.

[Bug 1022716] [NEW] emacs freezes after moving window

2012-07-09 Thread Zack Ziegler
Public bug reported:

Hi I am running Ubuntu 10.04.4, with Emacs version 23.2.

Occasionally, when I start a new emacs window from the terminal, and
then move the window, emacs freezes. I am unable to click on anything or
edit anything. When this happens I close the window and open it again.
This doesn't always happens, and I think it happens most when I open the
window and do not type or edit anything before I move it. I think if I
click anywhere on emacs or scroll down or make any edits, and then move
the window, I don't have this problem.

This is not the end of the world, as it works enough for me to be able
to use the program. That being said, this is very annoying, and I would
really like to solve it.

Thanks,
Zack

[Bug 852915] Re: Speaker playback volume controls headphone volume as well

2012-01-04 Thread Zack Evans
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 857206 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/857206

I have gone full circle. So over in my bug we have deduced that I can
make different volume mixers work or not work correctly by forcing
different model parameters.

This is equivalent to saying that there no suitable model for my
complete hardware - or in other words - volume controls I see and DACs
that the netbook actually has are not correctly mapped. Because really a
model is a set of definitions of DACs and outputs.

So I will try the patch, try the build from the PPA mentioned above, and
try changing the model parameter and make a matrix of how these
interact.

[Bug 897427] Re: [Advent 4211, Realtek ALC1200, Green Headphone Out, Rear] Playback problem

2011-12-29 Thread Zack Evans
With targa-2ch-dig the headphone jack mutes correctly but it is still
not possible to use an external mic. The mic on the netbook chassis is
the Front Microphone and this works.

Meanwhile I thought I would investigate why alsa-base.conf was missing
and it turns out I DIDN'T HAVE ALSA-BASE INSTALLED.

This suggests a dependency bug somewhere as I have been using pulseaudio
and jackd for months without any problems apart from with the headphone
jack and external mic problems we have been talking about.

After I installed alsa-base, the jack sensing works correctly WITHOUT
adding the line to force the model. So I'm now interested to know why
alex has a problem.

Meanwhile it doesn't matter if I use the packaged version of alsa-
base.conf, or targa-dig, or targa-2ch-dig [I just tried], I can't use
the mic jack.

2011-12-29 Thread Zack Evans
So simple example: Skype through a headset. That needs the headphone
jack switch AND the external microphone to work so I'll try and figure
out how to get both working.

To be absolutely clear: I don't HAVE an alsa-base.conf to begin with -
is that the expected behaviour?

I'll add the file so the snd_hda_intel module picks up the config - if
that fixes my headphones I'll mark my bug 909348 as a dupe of this one.

[Bug 881046] Re: Panning in a virtual monitor is not possible after upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10

2011-12-29 Thread Zack Evans
Looks like the regression was introduced when trying to fix a problem
with the mouse going into space outside of the display, when you have
two displays of different sizes joined together. Here's the bug I think
Bryce referred to, and it looks like that broke panning.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20334

As Bryce says there are three proposed patches (!), so the best thing we
can do is try and get upstream to prioritise it. Sounds like some of the
patches only fixing panning or only fix scaling.

I just moved another bug from compiz to xorg - actually I now think it's
just a dupe of this one, I will go and mark it.

Bryce - if one of them fixes both problems and looks fairly simple is
there any chance of a cherry-pick?

[Bug 897427] Re: [Advent 4211, Realtek ALC1200, Green Headphone Out, Rear] Playback problem

2011-12-29 Thread Zack Evans
OK tried the targa-dig model. Now if I plug the headphone jack in and
then mute/unmute it comes to life, which is better than having to go
into kcm, but still not ideal!

The Advent 4211 has an ALC888 chipset. I am sure there is a CORRECT
model we should be using, guess I'll dig through the documentation some
more. There don't seem to be many with only TWO jacks listed in
/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt.

targa model gives similar results except the level is set incorrectly,
so everything is too quiet both through speakers and through headphones.

well...

It's a regression bug upstream and at time of writing there are three

Changing the output using Phonon controls in kconfig works fine.

Possible clue: If I boot with the jack in the socket sound is sent
through the external output correctly.

Changing the mixer volume does not help.

Once I have manually changed Phonon to send output through the jack,
volume control does work, so this isn't the same as bug #817943.

Hmm, reading bug #857206 I only seem to have one slider, which controls
either the internal speakers or the jack depending on where I have told
Phonon to send the sound. Is this related? Do I have TWO bugs here?
Should I have two sliders?

[Bug 907068] [NEW] Settings window looks like another backup window during backup

2011-12-20 Thread Zack Michener
Public bug reported:

My scenario:

Opened System Settings, Backup, set up a backup for the first time (to
an external hdd), set it off for the first backup. Closed the settings
window. Later, while it's still backing up, I open System Settings
again for something else, and I notice that in the launcher, instead of
two tile for deja dup and system settings, it shows two arrows next to
deja dup's icon (the safe), as if there were two backup windows open.

Basically, when a backup is in progress, the System Settings window
looks like another backup window in the launcher.

[Bug 789778] Re: lmms depends on wine1.2 not wine1.2+

2011-11-20 Thread Zack Evans
The fix to #696189 introduced this bug. At the very least a stopgap
dependency should be written in such as way that wine-1.2 or greater is
allowed.

Maybe during the next release (p..) we can have a look at splitting out
the Wine dependency and making it a recommendation?

[Bug 886442] [NEW] Expo launched with edge binding from locked screen

2011-11-04 Thread Zack Michener
Public bug reported:

When Expo is bound to a screen edge (in my case the bottom right corner)
and the screen is locked and off, waking the display by moving directly
to the edge will activate Expo. The password prompt is displayed in
each virtual desktop, as well as the unity launcher and the top panel,
as one would see them logged in.

One cannot use anything in the launcher or panel, but information such
as what windows are open, and perhaps tray notifications (I didn't test
this), are visible.

headphones.

[Bug 852915] Re: Speaker playback volume controls headphone volume as well

2011-09-18 Thread Zack Evans
So I have the opposite bug where I plug headphones in and I don't get
any headphone sound even though the System Settings has noticed that I
plugged them in.

However if I manually change it back to speakers, with the headphones
in, adjust the volume, change it to headphones and adjust the volume
again, THEN I get correct volume in headphones and mute speakers, as it
should be.

I think there's something broken with DAC selection as bugs #829843 and
#830641 seem to be a very similar problem!

[Bug 759213] Re: [HP Compaq 6005 Pro] Suspend does not resume

2011-09-03 Thread Zack Evans
I have had this issue since karmic; still here in oneiric. I think
there's some sort of race condition, because SOMETIMES it will come back

back to a blank screen.

Attached my kern.log from just after filesystems were mounted this
morning until the point I power cycled now.

[Bug 836229] Re: Ubuntu 11.10 26-aug-2011 beta won't boot

2011-08-31 Thread Zack Evans
So the attachment called kernel_oops is the screenshot ?

This looks like the kernel has already booted fine and the problem (a
hang?) is occurring much later in the process.

If that is correct, then you should be able to follow the instructions
in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingCasper to obtain the error log or at
least switch on the debug info so you can write some of it down.

It cannot be a complete system hang otherwise it would also ignore the
signal from the power button, so it must be something to do with the
keyboard driver...
