Public bug reported:

My Ubuntu was not fully working before I started the upgrade. I could
not actually access my desktop - when I logged in I either got a black
screen, an empty desktop, a desktop with icons (no dash), or no desktop
(hang on login screen). I attempted the upgrade to fix it, but it
failed.
