Have you blocked google?

Wallch pings google in order to find out whether you have internet

[Bug 1031654] Re: Unable to connect

2012-08-01 Thread alexsol
I knew that problems like this may arise. If you are interested I have a
quite crazy solution: Edit the wallch executable with a hex editor.

I tried it but it is a bit tricky so you have to be careful and follow
exactly the steps:

You said that your company has blocked your outbound pings, but not the
inbound (for example, you are able to ping localhost or 127.0.0.1,
right?)

I will write down what it worked for me. The 1st thing to check is
whether you are able to ping 127.0.0.01 (yes *exactly* this address)
with the command: ping -c 1 -w 2 127.0.0.01

If ping exits successfully read on, if not, then find a ten-letter ip
adress or server that you can successfully ping and then read on, but
where I say 127.0.0.01 replace it with the server/ip you can
successfully ping:

1) Download Bless hex editor:
sudo apt-get install bless

2) Copy wallch executable to your Desktop:
cp /usr/bin/wallch ~/Desktop/

3) Open Bless

4) Go to Edit-Preferences, and, under 'General', where it says
'Temporary Directory:' write in (do not select to open the dialog to
select the /tmp direcotry, just write, type in:) /tmp and click on
'Close'

5) Open the wallch executable which is at your desktop (Ctrl+O and
select it)

6) Press Ctrl+F, and on the right of the search bar, where it says 'as
Hexadecimal', make it say 'as Text'. Type in the search field google.com
and hit [Enter]

7) Only one occurrence will be found, write out google.com (VERY
carefully) and replace it with the ip you can ping, like 127.0.0.01

8) After you are done, click on File-Save as and choose to save it at
the desktop as wallch1

9) Right click on wallch1-Properties-Permissions-Allow executing file
as program

10) That's it! Run wallch1, and, if the internet functions work nice
then replace /usr/bin/wallch with this wallch1 and you are done!

[Bug 977597] Re: Doesn't handle images with non-English characters

2012-07-11 Thread alexsol
Fix released at:
https://launchpad.net/~wallch/+archive/3+
Specifically, current latest versions of this ppa are:
32-bit:
https://launchpad.net/~wallch/+archive/3+/+files/wallch_3.52-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
64-bit:
https://launchpad.net/~wallch/+archive/3+/+files/wallch_3.52-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb

This is a testing ppa before the version 4 of Wallch.

I know that in the changelog I didn't mentioned the fixed bugs, because
they are many of them :P

[Bug 968815] Re: Wallch is Stuck on a Foreign Language

2012-07-11 Thread alexsol
Hello there!
I've released a testing PPA (quite stable though) with some new features, which
also solves the problems you had.
You can find it here:
https://launchpad.net/~wallch/+archive/3+

Specifically, current latest versions of this ppa are:
32-bit:
https://launchpad.net/~wallch/+archive/3+/+files/wallch_3.52-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
64-bit:
https://launchpad.net/~wallch/+archive/3+/+files/wallch_3.52-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb

You can add this ppa, so as to receive updates from it as well, as following:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wallch/3+
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install wallch

I repeat that these are testing versions of Wallch that fix some bugs
and have some new features, but it is logical to have some bugs. Please,
if you find any, report it at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/wallpaper-
changer/+filebug

Thanks a lot!

[Bug 966850] Re: Wrong language used

2012-03-28 Thread alexsol
Hello David!
I think I know what causes your problem. It is the fact that you had the old
configuration of the program.
Please Press Ctrl+P to open the Preferences window, go to the 2nd button
(normally 'General') and choose from there 'English' as language. Click the
down-right button (normally 'Save') to save and restart Wallch.

Alternatively remove the directory ~/.config/Wallch to remove the old
configuration and restart Wallch.

The problem was caused because of the old configuration (in the position
of the Arabic language there was English in the old version) and that is
what causes the problem.

[Bug 928605] Re: Shift Live Earth wallpaper

2012-02-08 Thread alexsol
David, thank would be a nice suggestion, but the image isn't so big (its
resolution isn't enough for this).

So, instead of seeing what's going on in e.g. your country, you will
more likely see a pixelized area, being able to recognize hardly
anything :-/

2011-11-27 Thread alexsol
@Andrea, well, you have an interesting point! I just checked with some
images clearly stored in my hard drive, and the lag weren't there!

On the other hand, the images of the web pages are also being stored on
our hard drives to the cache, am I wrong? To put it in other words, the
images we drag en drop from a webpage are already in our PCs.

[Bug 879785] [NEW] open file - picture preview is huge

2011-10-22 Thread alexsol
Public bug reported:

Screenshot:
http://i.imgur.com/E6Gqo.png
Picture used to reproduce this bug:
http://i.imgur.com/GU9mC.jpg
To reproduce:
Open Eye of GNOME, press Ctrl+O and select the above image, its preview is
*huge* while it should show just a small preview on the right, just like
firefox does!
Of course it is not reproducible only with this picture but it's just an
example one in case you don't have any with big resolution.

[Bug 835524] Re: FTBFS, depends on libnotifymm-dev, which was removed

2011-08-27 Thread alexsol
Ok, a little explanation here, I had as a fault dependency from the 1st
place the libnotifymm-dev which has as dependency the libnotify-dev,
which is the one I actually need and that's why everything worked just
fine with the wrong dependency. No APIs are actually used from
libnotifymm-dev.

Changing from libnotifymm-dev to libnotify-dev fixes the problem of
libnotifymm-dev removal without requiring any change in the source code,
libnotify-dev was the real requirement.

So what's the proper way to open a file/url with the default application
chosen by the user? xdg-open relies on gnome-open and these where the
only ones I knew...

[Bug 787465] [NEW] View-Show MenuBar isn't working in 11.04

2011-05-24 Thread alexsol
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

If you click on the global menus the View-Show MenuBar and (un)check
it, it won't work, the menu will stay at the 'global menus panel' or
whatever it is. In my opinion this option shouldn't exist now,
considering that global menus are the future, and also considering that
a global menu has the advantage not to keep its own space on the screen
:)

[Bug 752371] Re: Applications that use close to system tray are removed from launcher, but continue to run

2011-04-30 Thread alexsol
Martin Eve is right!
Unity should at least provide the basic things for applications to run! Don't
forget that there are some applications that are cross-system and so they
cannot change so as to 'fit' to Unity... Tray is one of the most important
features of an OS that makes it user-friendly, as it provides easy and quick
access to an application without focusing on it or disturbing the user of what
he/she's doing at the current moment.
What is more, there are applications that are designed to run exclusively (or
not) from tray(i.e. Desktop Drapes or even the top video player, VLC!!!). All
these applications are buggy now or don't work at all. Now, applications that
are going to tray have to be killed (macabre and not so user-friendly as
default).

I don't know but a solution has to be found, soon. Maybe the tray has to
return as a very small panel (that exists only if there is a minimized
application) at the right-down corner that appears on mouse above it (as
the current Unity's panel at the left side).

[Bug 723381] [NEW] White Line when moving a window

2011-02-22 Thread alexsol
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

When you enable Extra Visual Effects, the windows are moving very nice,
but with a small bug. While moving, you can see an awful white line
between the mainwindow and the title bar (see attachment). I am using

[Bug 694963] [NEW] Package is not available for this type of computer

2010-12-28 Thread alexsol
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

I built a package myself, my PC is 32-bit (output of dpkg-architecture
-qDEB_HOST_ARCH is i386) and I built a package myself. It is called
package-name-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
This is the control file of the package:
Source: wallch
.
Build-Depends: qt4-qmake, libqt4-dev, debhelper (=7)

Architecture: any
Depends: mpg321, imagemagick, libnotify-bin, ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}
Description: ...

As you can see it says: Architecture: any (!)

I have to say that lintian doesn't output any errors for my package
(even with -i, -I options)

So the main problem is: When I open my package with ubuntu software center
happens something buggy:
This is the first try:
http://i55.tinypic.com/2rghyiq.png

As you can see it says is not available for this type of computer
(i386). This is quite weird. I built the package in a PC with i386
architecture and the control file says 'any architecture', and it says
that is not available for the computer?

So, I close ubuntu software center and reopened the same DEB and...:
http://i52.tinypic.com/29eq9gm.png

Error gone!

Very strange! Since then, sometimes I get this error message but sometimes not.
This bug had been noticed and a friend of mine as well.
If you need the DEB package for information, please see:
http://revu.ubuntuwire.com/p/wallch

Thanks :)

[Bug 674642] [NEW] notify-send doesn't show images that name includes comma (, )

2010-11-12 Thread alexsol
Public bug reported:

notify-send Text goes here -i /pics/path/goes/here
By using this way, notify-send doesn't show the image if it has a comma in its
name!
See here:
Same thing happens when the directory of the image has comma(s) into its name!
See here:
The strange is that commas are not recognnized as special characters by the
terminal. For instance, you can say 'mkdir alex, leon'
and a directory with the name alex, leon will be created! Same with 'cd
alex, leon' and 'rm -rf alex, leon' ! I found it quite strange!
