This is a little embarrassing, but I have now come to the conclusion
that there is some error in my printer. I did try ubuntu 15.10, but
then it occurred to me that I also should try older ubuntus, so I
downloaded 12.04 and got the same result.
I then got my sons macbook once more and the
I now have tried gutenprint 5.2.11-pre1 from a live USB with ubuntu
15.10, 64Bit, sadly with the same result.
Thanks for the suggestion. I am hoping for more advice

This was quite a long time ago. I am writing this from the same ASUS
running pinguy 11.10 beta. I have installed quite a lot of ubuntu and
ubuntu derivates in the last few years, and quite often the install
crashes/stalls at the end of the install process or on the subsequent
reboot.
