[Bug 1958147] Re: Nvidia acceleration has gone

2022-01-21 Thread amias
i have continued to have performance issues which are charecterised by
chrome making preload go nuts , its particularly bad when video is
involved. I discovered this by watching top when i got load spikes and
noticing that when i rebooted preload was bring the problem back.

i removed preload and now i don't get the same problem.

[Bug 993981] Re: Remmina Fails to Load rdp Plugin (remmina-plugin-rdp.so)

2018-11-15 Thread amias
This happened to me after upgrading to ubuntu 18.10 , i was previously
using the PPA version and the upgrade commented it out, it then
installed a newer version of remmina during the upgrade. to fix this i
needed to uncomment the ppa definition in my

/etc/apt/sources.list.d/remmina-ppa-team-ubuntu-remmina-next-bionic.list

then apt update and apt upgrade

now it works.

This is making it hard to use secure passwords because of a lack of

lets not let ubuntu drag down the basic level of security because of bug
that was fixed several years ago not being in the latest package.

[Bug 1615734] Re: Multiple monitors broken

2018-05-30 Thread amias
am seeing this on ubuntu 18.04 with a dell m3800 and OWC thunderbolt 2
dock and 4k iiyama 40 inch screen attach via displayport.

My internal 13inch 4k screen is initialised immediately but the external
monitor tries to sync but often times out.

It looks to me as if this is just an issue with timeouts , surely the
driver can made aware that its trying to sync and external screen so
should allow longer. This seems to be excerbated by my having different
scaling levels on each screen

Sometimes my laptop screen comes back with a strip missing down the side
or the the external monitor is at the wrong resolution.

EVERY time it randommly rearranges my windows and triggers a bug with
scaling in some qt5 apps (virtualbox , notes) where they get scaled up .

Its very annoying having to keep re-arangeing things.

I tried setting monitors.xml to be readonly and it complains , why can i
not fix my layouts ?

[Bug 1687246] Re: GNOME Shell should support fractional (non-integer) Hi-DPI scaling

2018-05-18 Thread amias
I am having this problem on ubuntu 18.04 on my dell precision m3800

it has built in 13inch 4k screen which is perfectly setup and scaled
but i also have external 40in 4k screen on display port , this gets scaled
to the same settings as the 13inch screen which is waste.

under unity i could scale each independently and it was excellent

additionally my external screen now only runs at a horrible 30hz when it used
to run at 60hz
the internal screen runs at 60hz . xrandr doesn't give me more options

I am using the nvidia driver in fulltime optimus mode with the built in

[Bug 1574251] Re: Resuming from screen lock with a multimonitor setup causes all windows to migrate to the "primary screen"

2016-09-05 Thread amias
this issue also effects me with 16.04 on 4k version of the same laptop
and an external 4k screen running on displayport. It seems like the
screens are not woken up fast enough and timeout causing the windows to
be moved from them. I wonder if the timeouts could be adjusted upwards
for high res screens.

it has got worse since 15.10

[Bug 1490349] Re: 15:10: bluetoothd reports "Not enough handles to register service" at start

2016-05-20 Thread amias
I have a possible variant of this bug in 16.10 with a 4.4.0-22 (standard
kernel at time of writing), after a day or so of uptime i start to get
these messages. they seem to go away after a log out and login.

This is on a dell precision m3800 using plantronic back beat pro
headphones , this combination worked semi flawlessly for the duration of
15.10 and most of 15.04.

this seemed to help, now my headset auto connects on startup

[Bug 1492764] Re: [drm:intel_pipe_config_compare [i915]] *ERROR* mismatch in ips_enabled (expected 1, found 0)

2015-12-21 Thread amias
upgrading to the 4.3 kernel above fixed it for me on my dell 7737 , have been
experiencing a lot of fan noise since this started and it doesn't seem to be
going away. Using top shows all of my browser processes constantly in more that
4% system calls all the time.
i also have a laggy response to typing.

This is a massive regression from 15.04 where this laptop worked
immaculately , this extra load feels like its damaging my laptop, it
causes it not to start properly several times before i get a working
desktop which cannot be right. I know there are big changes a foot but
this is becoming unsuable , especially now you have hidden the boot
process so i've no idea whats going on.

not happy with this regression and how little effort seems to be going
into fixing it

[Bug 1268771] Re: NVIDIA Prime fails with Linux 3.13

2014-06-05 Thread amias
this is still a problem for me on my dell inspiron 7737 .

works fine with 3.11 but every other kernel just crashes at the plymouth
screen.

additionally now that the kernel headers package for the 3.11 kernel is
gone nvidia-prime users are now unable to use DKMS to build things like
vbox drivers and other things.

Please either fix this bug or reinstate the headers package as many
others will be effected

[Bug 1258263] Re: can't delete device /dev/loop3: Device or resource busy

2014-05-28 Thread amias
still present in 14.04 , this looks like an upstream bug as i've seen it
reported for fedora as well.

this is a very annoying bug because it means you cannot reuse loopback devices
so are limited
to 8 loopbacks untill you have to reboot , its quite easy to use that up , this
also makes scripting
with loopbacks much harder because you can't clear and remake them in a simple
manner.

[Bug 1316596] [NEW] icon missing from update-managers unity launcher

2014-05-06 Thread amias
Public bug reported:

using a fully upto date 13.10 install if i run :

sudo update_manager -d

observed: when the dist upgrade is happening the icon in the launcher is
the big grey question mark default one.

expected: a non default icon although i can't think of what one might look like
to reflect a dist-upgrade but at least
not the default 'no icon' one as it doesn't inspire confidence in the upgrade
or product.

i know not a major issue but should be an easy fix and it stops the
migrants winging .

the dist upgrade is working fine so far.

notes:
this is a recent 32bit install (3 weeks) from scratch that is being updated to
14.04 , no themes have been applied
and minimal customisations have occured , ostensibly this is as supplied.

the launcher size is 32

Cheers

[Bug 945987] Re: No Settings are available in "Preferred format", only preset defaults are used

2013-11-18 Thread amias
raring ringtail is still attempting to rip cd's at 11khz which might ok
if you are listening to herb alpert (probably makes it more interesting)
but if you are listening to anything made in the last 20 years (i.e
electronic music with a huge dynamic range like say Reso , Noisia or
Frederick Robinson) its annoying.

Can we not just have a dialog pop up when you first try ripping that
asks you which settings you want to use ?

Cheers
Amias

2013-10-15 Thread amias
quite suprised to see a year on your patch is still required -

from the standard repos i had

evolution-mapi_3.6.2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
libexchangemapi-1.0-0_3.6.2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
pool/universe/o/openchange/libmapi0_1.0-4_i386.deb

these had that error and then i downloaded and installed your libmapi0
package and it seems to work again.

plz to get this in the main repo so more people can use ubuntu at work k
thnx bye

it doesn't allways happen and usually only after i've been listening for

[Bug 1169118] Re: Since last updates evolution is no longer able to receive or to send emails

2013-05-12 Thread amias
i have the same issue i think.

since upgrading to raring my gmail account credentials have been broken.

i now get "GDBus.Error:org.gnome.OnlineAccounts.Error.NotAuthorized: Did
not find password with username `m...@amias.net' in credentials" when
checking mail.

i can't remove or edit the account from evolution because its some kind
of dbus thing.

i tried removing and restoring the account from online accounts in
System settings but no change.

i tried to edit the passwords in seahorse but couldn't make any sense of it and
was somewhat shocked that it shows the
passwords without needing any password to unlock. I really don't want this
behaviour its dangerous.

i really don't want to recreate the mail account , it has gigs of mail.

im not happy with this way of doing things its not what i use linux for.

[Bug 993655] Re: Unity looses mouse click handler when using enabling USB headset

2012-10-26 Thread amias
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1007575 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1007575

I can confirm this bug with two different plantronics usb headsets a
blackwire c-620m and a blackwire c-420m.

pressing the volume buttons triggers a lack of mouse clickability and
unplugging the headset restores mouse functions.

this is on a fully updated precise install.

also this bug is marked as a duplicate of #1007525 but that bug referers
to a different hardware however the problem is the same , bad input
device handling is somehow making the volume buttons block mouse clicks.

[Bug 405294] Re: a2dp skips terribly

2011-10-31 Thread amias
I've experienced this problem with my dell vostro 1710 which uses a usb
connected Dell Computer Corp. Wireless 360 Bluetooth module connecting
to a motorolla dc800 bluetooth reciever on all ubuntu distros ,
although recently it has got less annoying to the point where its almost
usable. this works from my android htc hero and my girlfriends
macbookpro with maybe 1 tiny glitch per hour at most.

i get the skip messages in my syslog as well. i tried the hciconfig
lines , limits.conf tweaks , disabling headset . nothing makes it
reliable :(

i'm totally upto date with ubuntu 11.10 so am runnign kernel 3 and bluez

[Bug 883842] [NEW] [oneric][nvidia][dell vostro 1710] black screen on 1st resolution change or resume

2011-10-30 Thread amias
Public bug reported:

if i change the resolution of the screen with the either the nvidia or
ubuntu display settings tools the first time i get a black screen , if i
then wait for the timeout to expire it comes back (its a bit messy but
it settles) and then i can change resolution without incident untill i
reboot. I get the same result when resuming after a suspend and i think
this could be related.

[Bug 543440] Re: In Ubuntu Lucid Beta 1, firefox crashes on start, triggering apport "eternal loop" of bug reporting

2010-03-25 Thread amias
i had this problem , i started in safe-mode and chose to disable addons . this
made it start ok.
i then closed it and restarted normally and it worked ok.

it then failed again and i did the same but checked the addon list and
found that the web developer toolbar and split panel addons that i'm
using where flag as not compatible , i disabled them and restarted and
it all seems fine again.

maybe a bug in the handing of incompatible addons ?

[Bug 335297] Re: [jaunty] Keyboard and Mouse Frozen on Login Screen

2009-05-12 Thread amias
i have a dell vostro 1710 and have been experiencing the same lack of
stabilty since upgrading .

i've been with ubuntu for several years and this is the worst release
yet :( :( :(

There is clearly something going wrong with :
ACPI - power management is not making sense anymore and my battery is
discharging faster than it used to
MOUSE and KEYBOARD - mostly fixed with the gotos grub params , still not as
stable as it used to be
AUDIO - pulseaudio , it still sucks and is still not properly configured
DBUS - clearly getting random signals from ACPI and breaking
GDM - i can login using the latest ubuntu kernel

This is a serious regression.

[Bug 305525] Re: built-in mic not working with snd-hda-intel on Dell Vostro 1710

2009-05-03 Thread amias
i have a dell vostro 1710 and have similar problems under both intrepid and
jaunty.
my built in mic will not record anything but noise despite trying all the
combinations
of model flags (dell,3stack,laptop-eapd) and module load and mixer options.

The main problem here is that people are assuming that all dell vostro's use
the same chipset and they dont , it changes with the model numbers (see gentoo
wiki)

This is also getting tangled up in other confusions because the snd-hda-intel
driver is used
by many different soundcards all with different codecs and different i/o
layouts so this will
almost certainly not be relevant to other models.

mine uses a Realtek ALC268 , as verified by the output of

cat /proc/asound/Intel/codec#0
(see attachment for output)

I'm a pretty experienced linux user and am happy to help provide more info
and or test if needed , i would love to have this working for me and for others.

[Bug 156580] Re: No sound on HDA Intel; SigmaTel STAC9200; Gateway E100M

2008-04-01 Thread amias
I recently updated my 64bit hardy installation but the new kernel
2.6.24-13 has no modules package in the repo , this means i have no
snd_hda_intel module and so no sound. I know this is still beta but can
people please hold off releasing the kernel until the module packages
are built , its of limited use without it .

[Bug 183011] Re: JACK disabled in Gutsy PortAudio package

2008-03-12 Thread amias
just tried it hardy with the updated portaudio and yes i get a jack
option in mixxx but its not at all stable , it crashes jack when it
connects.

as an aside its scanning my mp3 files on every startup , which takes ages (i
have about 11,000 files which takes 5mins or so) although is faster
than it used to be and is definitely doing the same files again. on the upside
mixxx is now faster (non jack) .

Just to confirm i'm now using a Intel Core Duo with 2gig of DDR ram

[Bug 183011] Re: JACK disabled in Gutsy PortAudio package

2008-03-07 Thread amias
Its the same on hardy.
so to do the fix on both hardy and gutsy :

sudo apt-get source portaudio19
sudo apt-get build-dep portaudio19

cd /portaudio19-19+svn20071207/debian

edit rules and remove ENABLE_JACK = no from line 48

cd ..

dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -b

then cd back to below your portaudio source directory

install the new debs
sudo dpkg -i libportaudiocpp0_19+svn20071207-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
portaudio19-dev_19+svn20071207-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
libportaudio2_19+svn20071207-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

then restart mixxx and jack and it should all work

it runs slower than it used to on gutsy for me.

[Bug 183011] Re: JACK disabled in Gutsy PortAudio package

2008-03-07 Thread amias
got 1.6.0 beta2 working with jack by rebuilding the portaudio package with the
second instance of JACK_ENABLED=NO removed from debian/rules.
The logic was broken , it set this to no then conditionaly set it to yes for
i386 , ppc and then unconditionaly set it to no again so it could only be no.

works really nicely now.

[Bug 183011] Re: JACK disabled in Gutsy PortAudio package

2008-03-04 Thread amias
the package has indeed changed , i've just upgraded to 64bit hardy and jack
seems to be disabled.
i was able to forceably re-enable it by patching the debian/rules file and
rebuilding but it is very
unstable to the point of being unusable.

[Bug 150471] Re: [Gutsy] high processor activity after logging out and then logging in again

2008-02-13 Thread amias
noticed the same thing and solved it by adding a killall -9 nautilus to
/etc/gdm/PreSession/default and /etc/gdm/PostSession/default . This prevents
nautilus from chewing cycles when people are not logged in
instead of just waiting untill someone logs in again. This also works if X dies
randomly or someone does
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.

Beware that if you use xdmcp or some other way of having more than one session
at once then other nautilui
will be killed by this . Nautilus should restart automatically for any effected
user so this might not be as bad as
it seems , ymmv .

How about a patch ubuntu peeps ?
