The same happened here when upgrading from hardy to intrepid beta.
It left me with an unusable system.
I followed trjonescp instructions, then ran dpkg --configure -a
Everything seems to work ok now.

My /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules does not contain any old entries,
and
my boot-times are still too long. Turning off Wifi before boot reduces
boot-times with
about 30 seconds.
