No it does not make a difference, the problem appears in both cases when
doing a cold boot or a warm reboot.

I have this same problem in a Toshiba Satellite U200-SP7011. I muted
the sounds in Windows XP, and now there seems to be no way to unmute it
from Ubuntu. I am using Ubuntu 8.10.
