When X fails to start, I don't get the safe mode screen; I just have a blinking cursor in the top left corner. This occurs during random bootups, and without any interaction; the failure is before the username/password textbox is presented. I'm not sure what the something happening during login

I forgot to mention: sometimes it takes two or three sudo service lightdm restart attempts before the system proceeds normally. In other words, it will bootup, go to the blinking cursor, I'll restart lightdm, and it will go to the blinking cursor again. Sometimes if I'm fast, I can catch it
