This seems to fix it (at least for one version upgrade) for many
   people

   $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-331

   after that...

   $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-331-uvm

(some users may be on the versions of these packages suffixed with
   -updates )

   Update 2015-05-23:
As of the recent kernel update (3.13.0-53), the above two commands
followed by a reboot may not fix it. Instead:

   $ sudo apt-get install --reinstall nvidia-331 nvidia-331-uvm

   followed by a reboot.

however on tty1 this works as expected. i.e. the smbd is stopped then
started again with a process number given in output.

Re: [Bug 1068862] Re: upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 on a sans-pae CPU leaves kernel broken

2012-10-20 Thread awol
Christopher,

i understand the issues and am making the emotional adjustment. i was aware
of the PAE thing HOWEVER i COULD have installed xubuntu 12.04 without
any knowledge of PAE and arrived in xubuntu 12.10 as i have without even
trying.

IF i were such a naive user i'd be out on a limb, surprised and possibly
disappointed. actually though i'm not stranded and have plenty of choice.
certainly by the end of the 12.04 cycle this hardware will seem quite
ancient.

a test (for PAE support) in Software Updater prior to advertising a version
update could have been done. yes i know hindsight is 20/20 BUT let's face
it MANY if not MOST ubuntu installs are done to upCycle ex Windows boxes -
old hardware is a BIG part of the scene.

thanks for your efforts.

2012-10-19 Thread awol
i'm backing data out now - my remedy will be to fresh install 12.10 -
xubuntu from the mini.iso - iff that still works.

thanks be to the Flying Spaghetti Monster that the system is still
working on the old kernel.

i'll take advice on who to thank apart from tFSM.

Saeed,

this issue is difficult because it is intermittent - which means it happens
sometimes and not others due to an unknown cause.

i am currently not seeing this problem. if it comes back i will try your
fix and let you know if it works.

thanks.

[Bug 973778] Re: Unable to connect to Xfce Power Manager

2012-08-14 Thread awol
i have 2 32it installs of 12.04 (laptops) with Unity and Xfce (Xubuntu).
on Computer A, Xubuntu was installed THEN Unity. on Computer B the
standard Unity install was made THEN Xubuntu. the result of this is that
A uses the Xubuntu login and B the standard login - sorry i don't know
the details of the difference between these two logins. Manager, greeter
???

computer B HAS this problem but NOT for the original install
administrator account - only subsequently created accounts. Computer A
does NOT have this problem for any account. the problem happens only
under Xubuntu NOT Unity.

the main issue for me is that, since the power manager seems to be not
working at all under effected logins, closing the lid does nothing even
though settings say to Suspend. that is settings made under Unity -
there are no settings under Xubuntu.

this is not good for a naive user.

i suppose a workaround is to install Xubuntu first and use the Xubuntu
login - but i prefer the standard login for aesthetic reasons.

i'm an Xubuntu user at heart as are my clients but i feel obliged to
keep up with Unity as it is more mainstream.

sorry for the rambling description - i'll try my workaround and report.
i will put effort into whatever experiments might be thought necessary.

2011-12-24 Thread awol
i can second this - i have Thunar 1.2.3, xubuntu 11.10, AMD64, Inkscape
0.48.2 r9819

just hovering (no mouse click at all) over a 7 MegaByte .svg file
causes Thunar to lock while taking a whole CPU tread for about 50
seconds.

this does not happen with Nautilus, it does NOT happen for a 23 K file.

happy holidays.

[Bug 853112] Re: tranmission does not start

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 853112
When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug'
and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Can you explain what you mean by 'does not start'? Transmission won't show
its window? Or its the torrents that won't start/download?
Thanks.

[Bug 155231] Re: NV20 [GeForce3] nvidia not supported by nvidia-glx in gutsy

2007-10-26 Thread awol
tried a bunch of options (some) as were used in Feisty - no use.

looked in /var/log/messages. found -

taints kernel.
Oct 27 11:33:59 oct kernel: [ 44.137364] NVRM: The NVIDIA GeForce3 GPU
installed in this system is

Oct 27 11:33:59 oct kernel: [ 44.137718] NVRM: No NVIDIA graphics adapter
found!

well - that tells the story. the legacy driver is required despite NOT
being necessary in Feisty AND indication in the package descriptions
that GForce3 needs standard nvidia-glx.

nvidia-glx-legacy works giving screen-blanker 3d support and 3d support
for games like trigger. gnome GUI extras are NOT supported.

[Bug 155231] Re: NV20 [GeForce3] nvidia not supported by nvidia-glx in gutsy

2007-10-26 Thread awol
here some pieces of my working xorg.conf -

snip
Section Device
Identifier Failsafe Device
Boardname NVIDIA GeForce3 (generic)
Busid PCI:1:0:0
Driver nvidia
Screen 0

Option AddARGBVisualsTrue
Option AddARGBGLXVisuals True
Option NoLogoFalse

Option AllowGLXWithComposite True

Vendorname NVIDIA
EndSection

Section Extensions
Option Composite Enable
EndSection
 snip

the AllowGLXWithComposite allows screenblanker 3d, 3d games (eg.
trigger), and blender3d, with this hardware/driver.

hope this helps.

thanks ubuntu.

[Bug 155231] NV20 [GeForce3] nvidia not supported by nvidia-glx in gutsy

2007-10-20 Thread awol
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx

Device Manager reports an NV20 [GeForce3] graphics card. nvidia-glx and
nvidia-glx-new don't start, and the system drops to low graphics mode -
at least it's a GUI. nvidia-glx worked on the same hardware in feisty.
nvidia-glx-legacy works but that's no good for advanced Gnome -
apparently.

** Affects: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
