the system now no longer hangs at shutdown, but there are still
filesystems it complains it is unable to unmount, and the system still
hangs if it unable to unmount /home, which happens to be an nfs share

that it had been renamed. i've added SoftStart yes to the config, but

thanks for finding that. indeed, if i comment that out as you suggest,
70-persistent-net.rules is automatically generated by the system.
perhaps this was meant to address situations in which the os is a vmware
host? obviously when the os is a vmware guest, this result in
undesirable
to add a bit of detail here - this is a vmware esx 4 environment, with a
number of hosts providing a number of guests, with the typical
characteristics of this sort of environment [shared storage from a san
array, vmotion, etc. etc.]. in this particular scenario, a minimal
ubuntu server install is

package. this was not the case in the previous version
(2.4.21-0ubuntu5.2). the following files are missing:
/usr/lib/ldap/nssov.la

that's a good point. i'm not terribly familiar with ubuntu/debian
packaging particulars, but could a meta package be used, that could be
satisfied with either nslcd or slapd? would that allow for flexibility,
while not breaking upgrades?

nss-pam-ldapd should not depend on nslcd

since the nssov slapd overlay can also provide the necessary components
for the stub libraries to work, nss-pam-ldapd should not explicitly
depend on nslcd. users using the overlay would have no need for nslcd,
and therefore it would not need to be installed.
