I fixed this by entering into firefox's about:config and changing the
value in "keyword.URL" to
http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&=&btnI=I'm%20Feeling%20Lucky&meta=lr%3D&q=
If someone has the default value it may be helpful to post it here.

I've had this error for some time, I (semi-)fixed by toggling jpeg under
the image loading section in compiz config manager.
There remains some flicker when entering/exiting windows and some redraw
things outside the GL application but it seems to fix the major
annoyance of this.
