[Bug 307462] Re: ruby is slow because of --enable-pthreads

2010-04-26 Thread bronto
I'd add my 0.02.

Maybe you could provide two different packages for ruby, the current
stock version and another one compiled with --disable-pthreads?

I've just filed this wishlist entry to Debian: http://bugs.debian.org

[Bug 499891] [NEW] Unstable wireless connection after upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10

2009-12-23 Thread bronto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Hello there

I am quite undecided where to file this bug, but as far as I can see it
could be something between Network Manager and something in the kernel
(drivers)?

The NM version I was using was the following (I had to switch to wicd):

bro...@lotus:~$ sudo apt-cache policy network-manager
network-manager:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 0.8~a~git.20091013t193206.679d548-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 0.8~a~git.20091013t193206.679d548-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://it.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 0.7.1~rc4.1.cf199a964-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://it.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages

As Google reveals, I am one of those users that experimented problems with
wireless connections after the upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10.

After the upgrade, NM successfully connects to the wireless network, but
it loses it after less than a minute. It retries to connect short after,
and may succeed again, to lose it once again less than a minute later.

To understand if this was a NM problem I did the following:

1) disabled wireless from NM, added this entry to
/etc/network/interfaces:

iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid WiFiBronto
wpa-psk PutYourKeyOnLaunchpad!

ifup wlan0 successfully configures the interface, and the connection is stable.

2) used wicd instead of NM: the connection is stable

3) removed the connection from NM and re-created it from scratch: the
connection is UNSTABLE

4) reset the AP to factory settings and reconfigured: the connection is
UNSTABLE

5) installed the latest kernel from jaunty, booted it: the connection is
stable (but, unfortunately, I have no audio...)

Messages in the logs in case of unstable connection are similar to the
ones I am attaching from /var/log/syslog

My Ubuntu installation is a pretty standard one, that started as a 8.04
and was upgraded up to 9.10. The only non-standard configuration is that
I eventually had to disable pulseaudio due to crappy audio and high CPU
consumption (I think it was at 8.10).

bro...@lotus:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10

My PC is an HP Compaq 8710w laptop. The wireless card, as reported by lspci, is:

bro...@lotus:~$ lspci | grep -i wireless
10:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN
[Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)

The driver is a iwlagn:

bro...@lotus:~$ lsmod | grep iwl
iwlagn109052 0
iwlcore 112540 1 iwlagn
mac80211 181076 2 iwlagn,iwlcore
cfg80211 93052 3 iwlagn,iwlcore,mac80211
led_class 4096 3 iwlcore,sdhci,hp_accel

Is this a real bug or I did something wrong?

Thanks in advance for any solution you could provide.

Hello there

Sorry for being so late, but I was on holiday at first, and sick then
:-(

No good news, unfortunately. I installed the new kernel and fired up
skype, then went in options-video devices and pressed the Test button.
Skype crashes. This happens deterministically, either if skype is still
setting up its connection or if the connection is already ok.

In case you need more info, just let me know.

[Bug 222803] Re: Java broken in openoffice hardy upgrades

2008-06-01 Thread bronto
Hello

I can't tell if I hit an upgrade bug, since it is the first time I use
the wizards, anyway here we go.

When I tried to use the Fax wizard, I got a warning dialog. The dialog
recommended to configure a JRE in the settings, and to install
openoffice.org-java-common.

The package was already in place.

Configured OO to use the JRE 1.6 I had already installed. No way.
I removed JRE 1.6, installed JRE 1.5 and reconfigured OO to use it: no way.
Starting OO from the command line returned a javaldx failed error, and
nothing more.
I reinstalled openoffice.org-java-common: no way
I installed both JRE 1.6 and 1.5 and configured it to use 1.6: no way.

At that point I tried again to run from the command line. After trying
to use the fax wizard I got this error:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ oowriter
javaldx failed!
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ [Java framework]sunjavaplugin.so could not load Java
runtime library:
file:///usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.03/jre/lib/i386/client/libjvm.so.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

I didn't have any java-6-sun-1.6.0.03, I have java-6-sun-1.6.0.06
instead.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/lib/jvm# ln -s java-6-sun-1.6.0.06 java-6-sun-1.6.0.03

drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 2008-06-01 12:50 java-6-sun-1.6.0.06

Now it works. So, either the wrong path is hardcoded somewhere, or a
setting is not being updated.

I hope this helps.

[Bug 134285] Re: (046d:0850) QuickCam Web doesn't work in Feisty and Gutsy

2008-05-08 Thread bronto
Hello

I have a quickcam, as well, and it doesn't work with Skype, but maybe I
found a new clue. It's like Skype it's reading the image in YUV format,
despite the torgb setting of the driver.

Let me explain this one better.

This is the ID of the cam:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# lsusb | grep -i quick
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:0850 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Web

and this are the current settings:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# qcset -i
Name : Logitech QuickCam USB
Type : capture subcapture
Channels : 1
Audio devices : 0
Maxsize : 356,292

Color : 32768
Contrast : 32768
Whiteness : 32768
Depth : 24
Palette : RGB888 packed into 24bit words.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# for OPTION in debug qcdebug keepsettings settle subsample

frameskip: 0

Now, using gqcam, setting RGB in the preferences and pushing Apply,
the image is ok (files: Screenshot-gqcam - Logitech QuickCam USB.png
and Screenshot-gqcam.png). If I select YUV instead, and press Apply,
the resulting image is pretty similar to what you get in other programs,
e.g.: skype.

Note also that the wecam started misbehaving right after I switched from
Debian testing to Ubuntu 7.04, nearly one year ago. The same webcam with
the same driver and the same version of Skype worked flawlessly in
Debian. The same thing happened to Wengophone, that worked ok with that
webcam until I switched to Ubuntu.

I hope this information is useful to catch the problem.

[Bug 200952] Re: [hardy] iwl3945 Intel 3945 ABG cannot connect to AP with hidden ESSID

2008-05-06 Thread bronto
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 200950 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/200950

Same problem here with that network card. I am using an HP Compaq
nx7400. The wireless button LED is on.

I am configuring a network with a given ESSID and WEP hex key using
network manager. The AP is hidden, and since is our company's wireless
network, I can't unhide it.

We have two cases here I am trying to isolate.

Case 1) Despite the interface gets a valid configuration (addresses for
DNS servers and gateway are correct; interface IP, netmask and broadcast
addresses are correct, too), I can't even ping the gateway (ping results
in an Destination host unreachable error).

Case 2) the network interface doesn't even get a valid address

Doing a /etc/init.d/networking restart makes the wireless interface
usable

Please ask me anything useful to solve this bug (files, command
outputs...) and I'll be happy to help.
