The /etc/hostname file is changing as it should.
However, the old name of the server remains in the /etc/hosts file.

Sorry for the long delay due to a vacation. It was both the help icon and the
help support mark under the system menu on the upper Gnome panel. I have
solved (!) this problem by reinstalling ubuntu 10.04. Thank you for your
attention

I am a new user to Ubuntu. I could access to log off/turn off icon on GNOME at
the very upper right corner, when I first installed Ubuntu 10.04 last week.
However, that icon is now obscured by a mirror image of my account name. I
restarted my session by ctrl+alt+del; but
