I do not have any SMB drives mounted, yet old connections from several
months ago are open and still flooding 445:

into one partition. However, we can choose ont partition on the disk (and

For what it's worth: first I thought I had the compiz hanging problem
described at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/259385 but removing
compiz didn't work for me. Compiz works fine after the workaround I
described above.

Confirmed on fresh amd64 hardy install with all updates on Dell D820 with
external USB Dell keyboard. Note: home directory restored from a previous
Feisty installation on this same laptop. Turning off via CTRL+SHIFT+NUM LOCK or
via GUI as described by James, solves the problem.
Seems strange
I just did a fresh install of UbuntuStudio Hardy. I still experience
this problem, after every reboot my volume is at 100%. I had to disable
the system sounds to prevent my laptop speakers from blowing up.

I'm experiencing this too on my Thinkpad T61p. Very annoying, since

Another confirmation, and data point if it helps. I have a cdrom (which
is now /dev/scd1) and a dvd/cdrw (/dev/scd0) and can mount a cd in the
cdrom drive, but can't mount a cd or dvd on the dvd/cdrw drive. Trying
to mount the dvd drive looks like the above reports:
